ducttape12··on Dark Side of the Ring: Pro Wrestling and Americana
I've heard about these issues in wrestling before, but is it just pro wrestlers? Is the rate of drug abuse higher in wrestlers than, say, other similar professions (boxing, MMA). Is wrestling doing this to its performers, or does wrestling attract people who have these problems?

There's calls for easier schedules, but as they say, the show must go on. You can't cancel a sold out arena if your lead person isn't feeling well, just like you wouldn't cancel a football game if the quarterback is sick.

(I'm not defending some of the treatment of wrestlers by their employers nor am I excusing their issues - I'm just asking do we know where these problems stem from? Seems easy to blame the boss, but is it their fault?)

ducttape12··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
I think people are missing the point - his point is simplicity. This is actually why I've stopped buying albums and switched entirely to streaming internet radio like di.fm. I spent way too much time and effort managing my mp3 library over the years. (ripping, tagging, file naming, album art, etc)
ducttape12··on Netflix Saves Kids from Up to 400 Hours of Commercials a Year
Yes, just without the guilt (since this means DDG is clearly okay with not making ad revenue off me)

If you're not a fan of blocking ads, DuckDuckGo let's you disable ads in their search results.
ducttape12··on A journey through internet garbage
Stuff like this is why I don't feel bad about blocking ads. This garbage adds no value and just exists to get clicks from tech illiterate people.
ducttape12··on Microsoft Solitaire Inducted into World Video Game Hall of Fame
Oh man those cards are awesome!
ducttape12··on Google terminated my developer account and started a competing business
I feel companies brought this on themselves. Sure, having an app might have helped early on to differentiate yourself from your competition, but now you have to have an app if you want to seem legit. Which means you have to get in bed with Google and Apple.
ducttape12··on Ask HN: How do you secure your Windows PC?
I mostly stick to open source or well known commercial software, run Windows Defender, and I run uBlock Origin. I'm of the opinion the biggest risk of malware comes from rogue ads.

I've only been hit with malware twice in the 25 years I've been using Windows. Once was me running a sketchy exe from a torrent site (that's on me) and once when I wasn't running an ad blocker.

ducttape12··on Father Time
I stopped reading when the author started talking about Trump. I swear, for people who hate Trump, they sure dedicate a lot of brain cycles to constantly thinking about him...
ducttape12··on GIMP receives a $100K donation
What's wrong with their bitcoin option?
ducttape12··on Adobe Flash’s Gaming Legacy and My Efforts To Save It
And this is the problem I have with tying anything to a remote server. Every digital movie, song, book, or video game that requires a remote server for patches, activation, or anything else will eventually end up like this.

What happens in 5 years when Sony turns off their PS3 servers? And what happens in 10 years when most of the hard drives in those PS3s need replacing?

ducttape12··on I Don’t Know How to Waste Time on the Internet Anymore
The internet used to be a place to communicate, now it's just a place to mine attention for ads through click bait, poorly written articles.
ducttape12··on Google's Plan to Make Tech Less Addictive
Kind of like how soda companies encourage people to exercise. They don't want you to stop buying their product, but cut back just enough to stop people complaining.
ducttape12··on Man Allegedly Used Change of Address Form to Move UPS Headquarters
If it was seriously this easy to pull off, perhaps the real guilty parties here are the USPS workers who let this happen unchecked.
ducttape12··on I hate telephones
Sounds to me like this guy has an anxiety disorder that he's masking as a hatred of phones.
ducttape12··on The Rise of Workplace Surveillance
If an employer feels the need to do this, it's a major red flag that there are serious issues in their culture and management. Monitoring your employees will just make things worse.
ducttape12··on Poll Shows People Don't Want Amazon Deliverers to Have Access to Their Homes
Agreed. In my area, 2 day shipping usually uses either UPS or USPS. Same day shipping uses their drivers. I've given up expecting it same day.
ducttape12··on Against an Increasingly User-Hostile Web
I've actually become a bit put off on a lot of "modern" technologies lately. Every website tries to keep you on as long as possible with click bait, every advertiser tries to track your habits, video games just try to upsell you to the season pass, and every webapp is just an upsell to the paid pro version. Heck, even our operating systems are nothing more than data collection points.

In many ways, I feel like technology doesn't work for us anymore, we work to serve technology.

ducttape12··on Ask HN: Where can I find high-end stock images for a website?
I always liked LibreStock.com
ducttape12··on Microsoft Presenter Gives Up on Edge, Installs Chrome
A lot of people in tech (myself included) would benefit greatly from this attitude. How many people get caught up arguing over minutia in tech, such as which distro to use, or which editor to use, or which way to do something when all options are perfectly fine?

I'm not saying cut corners, but instead keep your focus on what's important.

ducttape12··on Movies Anywhere App Launches with Joint Studio Backing
Eh, still prefer physical media when buying movies. This way you can't ever have the rights taken away to watch it (which just happened to me with a show I purchased digitally on Amazon).

(not to mention physical media is usually cheaper, you can loan them, sell them, servers are never down for maintenance, etc.)

ducttape12··on Uncle Bob and Silver Bullets
I've thought for a while the real solution to bad software is simple: hire intelligent developers who care

Only problem is, they are few and far between... (in my 10+ years in the industry, I've worked with only 3 people who I'd put into this camp)

ducttape12··on The Little ASP.NET Core Book
Thanks for making and sharing this!
ducttape12··on Reported difficulties getting help on Equifax's phone lines
The Washington Post wrote a click title. You won't believe what happened next!

... I didn't click the link on principle.

ducttape12··on Attacked by Rotten Tomatoes
I really want to go to the movies. There's nothing out I want to see right now. Heck, my friend who goes once a week hasn't been in like a month because nothing interests him.

Reminds me of how video game execs kept blaming piracy for their woes, until Valve realized it was a distribution issue. It's not rotten tomatoes, Hollywood, it's because you're putting out garbage!

ducttape12··on ReactOS 0.4.6 released
Using a third party implementation of the Win32 API reminds me of vegan cheese. It's great in theory, but it's never quite good enough. You'll either end up giving up and eating real cheese (using Microsoft Windows) or use some other ingredient (a different software product that runs natively on your OS of choice).
ducttape12··on The Subscription App Paradox
I've found the flipside of the subscription model; I'm actually able to use commercial software for free. Most subscription software has a free tier, and most of the time it's good enough for my needs.

In the few cases where it isn't, thanks to having some technical knowledge, I'm able to string some utilities or services together to accomplish what I need.

ducttape12··on When it comes to internet privacy, be afraid, analyst suggests
I've gone down the rabbit hole of trying to protect my privacy. Basically, unless you move to the mountains with no cell phone, no internet access, and grow your own food, someone somewhere will be tracking you. You'll go crazy trying to close all the loopholes (ready to fry the RFID chips on your car tires?)
