dublinben··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
These minibusses or dollar vans don't have strong brands that you would recognize. They often operate in a legal grey area, so they're deliberately anonymous looking if you aren't in the know.

dublinben··on Traffic Fatalities Are a Choice
This can be seen as backlash politics, where deeply rooted racial divisions are used to convince large groups to vote against their own interests in order to withhold any benefit to lesser groups. Two excellent books that explore this issue are The Politics of Resentment and Dying of Whiteness.

The extra customers are people who can’t afford to buy whatever nonessential product is being hawked, unless it is on a payment plan.

BNPL just encourages overspending by the most precarious consumers, ensuring that they will never get ahead.

dublinben··on "Night of the Living Dead" accidentally became public domain (2019)
This is exactly the same way that It’s A Wonderful Life became a much-revered Christmas classic. If the copyright hadn’t expired allowing monthlong TV marathons, it would have faded into obscurity. How many people remember The Best Years of Our Lives, which beat it out for multiple Oscars in 1947?
dublinben··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
The average price of new cars sold in the US last year was nearly $50k. The manufacturers make more money from expensive cars than cheap cars, and people keep buying them, so that's what they sell. Before they canceled the Fit, Honda was selling almost 10 times as many of the larger CR-V each year.

You can find numerous new cars for sale in Mexico for under $15k USD.[0] Even Europe has several new cars under €20k.[1] These are the same manufacturers we have here, but lower cost models that are only sold in lower-income countries.

dublinben··on Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic
It's a shame that riders of bikes and scooters in your city feel so unsafe riding on the road, that they are forced onto the sidewalks. Blame dangerous drivers and the lack of protected bike lanes though, not your neighbors who are just trying to arrive at their destinations alive.

Pedestrian collisions with bikes versus collisions with automobiles are utterly incomparable both in number and severity. If that cyclist had been driving a car, you would probably need to find a new nanny!

Nothing says freedom like being required to spend thousands of dollars just to get around and participate in society. Imagine how "free" the roughly one-third of folks who are too young, too old, too disabled, etc. to drive a car feel when trying to go about their lives.

Anyone who would downplay the value of an office manager has never appreciated a great office manager. Most offices do not have a competent (if any) office manager, which is something we should all demand of our workplaces.

>It’s not like the experimentor can issue a placebo to themselves.

TFA describes a protocol for doing just that. The author randomly selected between the treatment dose and placebo. They didn't reveal the choice until after the effect should be complete so they could record the results.

dublinben··on Carbon capture more costly than switching to renewables, researchers find
There's no profit motive behind reducing consumption to lower emissions, so it's not a message being pushed by companies. It's obviously the easiest way for most people to reduce their environmental impact though, but it's always been very unpopular to tell people to 'spend less, save more.'
