If only we could aloe property assessments to increase with a local cost of living index, we would at least have enough property tax revenue to pay teachers.
Yes. Senior engineers at these companies are heavily compensated via equity. Total comp can fluctuate by tens of thousands each month. Its crazy hoe much picking a job has become an exercise in stock picking, and it’s crazy how little our individual performance correlates with comp.
I agree there are certainly systemic issues that inflate prices beyond the reach of most Bay Area residents. However, first time home buyers are probably buying something cheaper than median. With dual tech income and no dependents, it’s certainly still possible to buy a condo or townhouse without family money.
How are you saving on fees when you buy things with bitcoin? The seller pays credit card processing fees, and I don’t see them giving you a discount for paying bitcoin.
Isn’t Saudi Arabia an example where citizens did became lazy, and the government had to introduce incentives to go to college, start businesses, etc? And they still need cheap migrant labor for everything from childcare to construction, so automation has a long way to go.
MoviePass can’t use the gym model because most people actually like going to the movies, it’s not aspirational. MoviePass also has much higher cost per visit, since they have to pay full price to AMC.
Moving government jobs out of these mega cities. This is mentioned in the article as something Beijing planned to do.
US should also move some jobs out of DC and into a cheaper area that needs a job boost.
Just because you want to work forever doesn’t mean you will have the opportunity to. There are plenty of 50 year olds who unexpectedly find themselves out of work and unhireable.
Robinhood's average account size is much smaller than the traditional brokerages, so they're not making much (if any) per client. I don't know if waiting for your clients to get rich is a viable strategy these days because these clients might jump to better options in the future.
I really don't understand why Zenefit's script was such a big deal. Have you ever had to sit through a bunch of slides and be forced to spend x hours staring at something you can speed read through in minutes? The regulations didn't care about testing real knowledge, just time spent on the module. Anyone with a slight bit of naughtiness will hack around this.
This is especially true for new grads who are willing to share an apartment. Student loan also doesn't scale with COL. For frugal engineers without family, SF Bay Area or Seattle can make a lot of sense.
Yup, med schools are actively advertising public loan forgiveness as a way to get students to pay whatever they charge. Students don't have any incentive to take on less debt since they'll pay the same no matter how much debt they take on.
Large companies have more employees and will have more violations, maybe proportional to their size, whereas a rich person should not have more speeding tickets than a poor person and should arguably pay more per violation.
Given that compensation in the Valley can go up 10% a year, and a significant portion can come from stock and bonus, I find data on GlassDoor to be fairly useless. The h1b database is a good source on base pay, but doesn't show stock and bonus.
For an average American with household income $50k, getting a $1k raise (after tax) is probably not trivial. For techies in SF, definitely spend time on building your career, negotiating compensation, and try to save on rent.
There is no guarantee that you can collect tax through dividend and income. Companies don't have to pay dividends (Buffet's Berkshire doesn't pay dividends but is wildly profitable), and there is no way for a country to tax capital gains from a foreign stock holder.
Because CEOs and other higher paying jobs impact the world we live in. Women need to be represented in high impact jobs so that we don't have a world designed entirely by men.
