dtoma··on South Korea to spend $1T on more memory chip production and humanoid robots
> all that socialist bullshit she produced

... what? How's that the first thing that comes to mind about her, before "neoliberal", "conservative", or "austerity"? For that matter, when has the CDU ever been anywhere near socialist, in Germany or in the EU parliament?

100% agree we're still dealing with the fallout from her policies though.

dtoma··on Ask HN: Does (or why does) anyone use MapReduce anymore?
The "streaming systems" book answers your question and more: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/streaming-systems/97814.... It gives you a history of how batch processing started with MapReduce, and how attempts at scaling by moving towards streaming systems gave us all the subsequent frameworks (Spark, Beam, etc.).

As for the framework called MapReduce, it isn't used much, but its descendant https://beam.apache.org very much is. Nowadays people often use "map reduce" as a shorthand for whatever batch processing system they're building on top of.

dtoma··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
If anything, the origin of the 5th republic under its founding president used referendums to validate the president's actions. He literally resigned after losing a referendum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_de_Gaulle#Retirement.
dtoma··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
I don't understand this point, and it's one we see very often. What would have happened if they'd been civilised?

1. We had a convention citoyenne pour le climat. Macron then mostly ignored it.

2. We have elected representatives who can vote on the laws for us. Macron then used article 49.3 to mostly ignore them.

3. Vote? For which candidate? None of them would cover all of the GJs' demands.

If you disqualify protests as a valid form of democratic expression, you also disqualify our famous revolution, the feminist protests that earned women the right to vote, the union strikes that earned us many worker rights, etc.

> I'll never trust people who think that violence is justifiable

Ah, that explains it. You only see violence in protesters who break windows, not in governments who enact laws on their people. Am I correct in assuming that you're ok with making people work 20 hours/week for the RSA as well?

dtoma··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
Who is "as far-right as it gets" if not these two? (in any country you want, not necessarily France)

Other variables could have been adjusted (pensions, contributions...). Independent studies showed that our retirement system is very much affordable for our government and will still be 50 years from now. Just today it's also been revealed that the government's plan overestimated its savings by 4B euros...

Are you just repeating a common cliche while not knowing much about the situation?

So yes, unilaterally deciding to raise the retirement age, which doesn't actually fix anything, without having a vote, without listening to the protests, is neither mild nor democratic.

dtoma··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
I’m sure everyone would agree it’s a bit of both? We’re responsible for not intentionally hurting others, and we’re responsible for not being excessively controlling or sensitive about others’ behaviours?
dtoma··on AWS and Blockchain
> Having one neutral platform, controlled by no one, with standardized API's and immutable open programs that anyone can permissionlessly build on - is amazing.

Isn't that also an open door to bad actors?

dtoma··on Signal's Cellebrite Hack Is Already Causing Grief for the Law
Are you misquoting them on purpose? They said "A disappointingly large amount" not "a large amount".
dtoma··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
Unlike the people in this comic, I'm actually making a point, which you seem to have missed: community, by necessity, doesn't work with absolute freedom. What matters is what we agree to compromise over and why we do so.
dtoma··on YouTube bans coronavirus vaccine misinformation
You're posting this on HN, a platform that has moderators and doesn't allow certain things to be said. So you implicitly agree that there is a trade-off between free speech and ability to live in a community.
dtoma··on Coinbase offers exit package for employees not comfortable with its mission
> "an inordinate amount of time researching [...] I usually set aside a day or two"

English isn't my native language but doesn't this make it sound like you only spend "a day or two" researching? Or are these two sentences unrelated?

> Bringing politics to the office(thanks Google!)

How bad is it really? Have you ever been told something like "I won't review your PR because you don't vote for the same person I do"?

dtoma··on Why should I do production support?
Historically, I don't think we've made much progress in terms of pro-worker labor laws without said workers first having to get together to create bargaining power. By default the power is in the hands of the ruling class, and they have no interest in handing out paid holidays, reasonable working hours, or sick leave.
dtoma··on How I got the French Tech Visa to start my company in France
I wish we could get some info from an expert on that topic, as a French person some of my friends said they were surprised how much help they got from the government (grants, tax rebates, etc.) and they ended up doing all their software development in France, while the hardware was built in China, because they found the dev quality/cost ratio was so good.

There's also money you can get for creating a startup if you volunteer when your company does a round of layoffs for example.

dtoma··on A practical guide to writing technical specs
I believe some parts of this are important:

1. Describing the problem, the business value, and the key words/definitions

2. Defining the goals _and non-goals_ for the project

3. Describing the implementation's logic and data model (a simple schema with boxes and arrows)

I like how it is done in "Domain Modeling Made Functional". However I agree too much of this is counterproductive.

dtoma··on 'Cancel Culture' Comes to Science?
What's the use about a study on _correlation_ between these two things? You could also have a study on correlation between IQ and poverty, IQ and access to education...

Not to mention, what's the point of IQ anyway?

Maybe no one is picking up the subject because it would be a waste of time?

dtoma··on Benchmarking shell pipelines and the Unix “tools” philosophy
If a company has recurring troubleshooting issues, eg. "we need to know which process is taking all the CPU/RAM/IO", why wouldn't they add a script when they provision their machines with puppet or whatever tool they use?

Then instead of having to remember how to check all these things, they just run "find_resource_hogs.sh" and voila. It also enables other people to troubleshoot without specific knowledge.

Of course you don't want to put anything in there just because it might save 10 seconds, but then https://xkcd.com/1205/

dtoma··on Why Socialists Don't Believe in Fun (1943)
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "socialism". France is a very socialist country (esp. compared to the US of A), yet we are nothing like the USSR. Same goes for many EU countries. Aren't you talking about oligarchies rather than socialist regimes? The fact that some oligarchies were born under the pretense of socialism doesn't mean socialism was the cause.
dtoma··on When Bash scripts bite
Does error handling in your bash scripts ever become annoying enough to warrant a rewrite in, say, OCaml?
dtoma··on From Python to Lua: Why We Switched
My company also uses RHEL5 quite a bit, so in order not to stay stuck on 2.4 I use anaconda: https://www.continuum.io/downloads

It's a life saver.

dtoma··on Abandoning PHP for Python
Of course you can, but I think choosing between various languages mostly ends up being a matter of taste. I tried PHP, built a rather large website using it and found out I didn't like reading my own code after a while - a problem I have not encountered yet using python. I don't think this kind of article should be taken as a list of reasons that make python better than PHP, just as a reminder that maybe you could have a look at python if you do not enjoy writing your code in PHP.
dtoma··on Smog over Singapore
We've had up to 700+ this year in Beijing. The "standard", almost everyday 200+ makes it hard to do any sport... 700 was barely breathable. The situation here really deserves attention such as the one in Singapore it getting right now.
