dsq··on Fatty acid could restore failing vision
Does this imply that supplementing with omega 3 can help age related vision decline?
dsq··on Bombadil: Property-based testing for web UIs
Excellent section of a sublime book/s
dsq··on Bombadil: Property-based testing for web UIs
I’m curious regarding your choice of name. What in your company or product brought you to adopt that name, or whether you just liked it (So do I!).
dsq··on High-power microwave defeats drone swarm
Maybe off topic, but I was wondering if the EM countermeasures harm the bird life.
dsq··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
There is something humbling seeing great work.
dsq··on Can filtering seawater provide for a thirsty world?
I felt the article was lacking a reference to the person who made reverse osmosis into a real solution for desalination, Prof. Sidney Loeb. A brilliant yet unassuming man.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Loeb

dsq··on To Delay Death, Lift Weights (2017)
“Strength training in a gym and doing bodyweight exercises seemed to confer roughly equivalent benefits.”

Important for those who prefer pullups/pushups…

dsq··on Using your phone on toilet may give you hemorrhoids: study
Just roll out a long strip and fold it twice, now you've got quad-ply. That’ll show em.
dsq··on Writing with LLM is not a shame
I would rewrite the title as "There's no shame in writing with LLMs", or, "Writing with LLMs is nothing to be ashamed of".
dsq··on Ask HN: Juggling a sideline in your 50s
Is it profitable enough to make it worth the hassle? Do you have paying customers and a low churn rate?
dsq··on DHH: CV's Are Full of Shit
10 years ago the initials DHH would be instantly recognizable to any HNer. I remember joining when the ROR-Django wars were raging. Times have changed.
dsq··on $250M top AI salaries dwarf those of the Manhattan Project and Space Race
Okay, a particular person got an offer that amortized out comes to a billion over four years. How is this radically different from all the other egregious buyouts (such as whatsapp with 55 employees bought for 19 billion, when the dollar was worth a lot more)?
dsq··on Skyscraper-size spikes of methane ice may surround Pluto's equator
Sounds like the crystalline structures on Krypton
dsq··on Microsoft study – The 40 jobs most affected by Al
I did not read the entire article but did go over some parts. To sum up: whatever can done over a screen and requires less synchronous dialog with a human - to AI.
dsq··on Blackstone executive among four people killed in Midtown NYC shooting
It's Blackstone, not Blackrock. I see the latter in almost all comments online on this subject.

Buttle, not Tuttle.

dsq··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email (2022)
I am getting "403 buzz off"
dsq··on Second Variety, by Philip K. Dick (1953)
Dick is one of the writers that accompanied me in my youth, along with the Golden Agers (IA, RAH, AC etc.). His books are the base for many SF tv/movies. Total Recall, The Man in the High Castle, and others. This story, written in the fifties, is eerily evocative of todays drone warfare.
dsq··on Ask HN: Do you regret not being a Dr, lawyer, or something with advanced degree?
Base of 190k + bonus? In the Atlanta area? Working from home? With job security? Sounds great.
dsq··on WW2 veteran, 106, puts long life down to custard
Curious to know what ages his relatives got to (who survived wars/infections) Parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. The article doesn't mention anything about it.
dsq··on Surprise snowfall blankets the driest desert: Atacama turns white
When the snow melts, would the rise in humidity cause problems for the telescopes?
dsq··on Jane Street Boss Says He Was Duped into Funding AK-47s for Coup
Aren't they supposed to be the smartest of all quant firms?
dsq··on Ask HN: Digitize a Library?
I am also looking for a similar solution, but for various documents of different sizes and types.

Ideally it would also make it easy to give names for folders and subfolders.

dsq··on Britain can't afford to spend £24,000 on every adult
So what can be expected in the coming few years for the UK?

- Managed decline (sounds the best but maybe too optimistic)

- Catastrophic crash or hyperinflation

- State default

- Miracle (on the scale of North Sea oil discovery or even more)

- something else

dsq··on 'Crazy' data rules hit German plans to boost army reserve
Firewalled
dsq··on Alberta separatism push roils Canada
Also, a train has a lot pf moving parts which makes it naturally more fragile.
dsq··on Why Have Birds Never Gotten as Big as T. Rex?
I read that the oxygen content of the atmosphere was significantly higher then:

"The atmosphere of the Earth 80 million years ago was discovered to have 50% more oxygen than modern air. Brenner and Landis found that for all gas samples taken from amber 80 million years old the oxygen content ranged between 25% to 35% and averaged about 30% oxygen".

From: https://www.npl.washington.edu/av/altvw27.html

Sounds like being supercharged with oxygen could support larger mass on land.

dsq··on Dyson spheres could exist – but there's a catch
I really liked the Ringworld, it always gave me a delicious shiver, and it was just on the edge of preposterousness but you could see how the physics could work. Not so much with a sphere.
dsq··on Dyson spheres could exist – but there's a catch
Even assuming you could build one, the artificial gravity created by the rotation would only exist around the equator, diminishing to nothing at the poles. So only a natrow band would keep people and their stuff from floatin ofr into the bubble eventually falling into the sun.

How do Dyson sphere proponents solve this?

I think that once you have profit & loss responsibility that changes.
