dsq··on Old Soviet Venus descent craft nearing Earth reentry
While I agree that one primary motive was to get more food, Communist atrocities generally start out with noble ideals, at least on paper. Pol Pot also intended to create an ideal society[1], at whatever cost.

dsq··on Old Soviet Venus descent craft nearing Earth reentry
The Holodomor and mass purges all occurred well before WW2 so there's no pass there for Soviet repression.
dsq··on USA's first 3D printed Starbucks coffee shop built in Brownsville, Texas
Two questions: Aren't foundations necessary? What is the advantage over human builders.
dsq··on Underwater volcano off US west coast is set up erupt 'any day'
"If Axial Seamount does blow, however, it won't post any threat human communities, experts say. It's too deep and too far from shore for people to even notice when it erupts, and it has no impact on seismic activity on land"
dsq··on The side hustle from hell
What kind of "space stuff"? Spacex/blue origin/nasa?
dsq··on America's nuclear arsenal to cost $946B over next decade
I can just see, shaking with horror, the image of missiles and anti missiles smashing into each other, raining immense radiation into the oceans poisining everything. And thats the best case, where the earheads are intercepted successfully.
dsq··on 'Tech entrepreneur took our money but failed to deliver our startup dreams'
>app to view all books in all libraries of Delhi

Is this an example of a scam or a legit app? Sounds nice but not profitable.

dsq··on Avoiding Skill Atrophy in the Age of AI
I remember my Dad telling me they had to memorize the logarithmic tables for physics studies. At some point after electronic calculators this was phased out.
dsq··on Most Phoenicians did not come from the Canaan, challenging historical assumptions
Couldn't the Phoenicians to be descended from the Sea Peoples of Bronze Age Collapse fame, which would explain their non levant genetics?
dsq··on Ask HN: What's a surprisingly useful tech skill that's underrated today?
Right, so when discussing a high productivity role, havig mastery of both the structure (such as a DB) and of the tools to investigate the structure (text manipulation, SQL querying) are key.

In my experience most developers like to skip knowing about the data.

dsq··on Ask HN: What's a surprisingly useful tech skill that's underrated today?
The question is what you mean by highly valuable. The sad truth is that in most workplaces many just coast along doing only what's necessary to not get fired. In which case doing your job more efficiently might draw negative attention (tall poppy syndrome).

Having said that, I think that having a good (both broad and deep) knowledge of the database schemas is invaluable for almost any information related role. Also, being able to manipulate large text very quickly (with vi/sed/awk, let's say), is useful for production emergency debugging on servers.

dsq··on 'Sun-Like' Stars
Tau Zero is the title of an SF book by Poul Anderson in which humans make an STL interstellar voyage. They probably got inspired from that book.
dsq··on Bill Gates claims only 3 jobs will survive the AI revolution
I would not have thought any of the above. Rather, jobs that require in person hands on presence. Setting broken bones is likely to remain relevant more than coding. Though conceivably a bone setting robot equipped with ultra sound and xrays could do that. Hmm...
dsq··on Ask HN: How do you propose to rebuild industry in a post-apocalypse world?
One problem is lack of law and order. You can build something and have it stolen by the local warlord or just randomly burned out of spite.
dsq··on Remote detection of radioactive material using a short pulse CO2 laser
(I am not a physicist). Can this be explained in laypersons terms? Can radioactive material such as a warhead or smuggled material be detected from a distance? What distance? (the article says 10m which I assume means meters). Can it do so through material such as shell casing?
dsq··on Population may be vastly undercounted, study claims
From the article:

>40 per cent of the world's 8.2 billion people live in rural areas

>the rural population is underestimated by half

Based on the first statement: 8.2*0.4=3.28 billion rural globally;

And according to the second statement, there re actually twice as many, so another 3.28 billion people, or:

8.2+3.28=over 11 billion in total on Earth.

dsq··on Tactical Nuclear Weapons in Southeast Asia (1967) [pdf]
Very interesting. Has this been declassified only recently, or has it been available previously?
dsq··on Chinese Hackers Sat Undetected in Small Massachusetts Power Utility for Months
From the title it would seem that there were several persons who were physically present inside some building, conveivably in sleeping bags and eating out of cans. Only after reading the article does it become clear that it was a remote breach. Disingenuous...
dsq··on Why has Russia been so politically stable?
I'd think that autocracies are stable until they aren't, upon which they shatter completely, such as the Assad regime.

That's not to say that the successor regime is necessarily better.

dsq··on Ask HN: Are you convinced enough by Elon Musk's vision to go to Mars now? Why?
I meant that I'm for it, just not to go myself, haha (not that I'd have any chance of being chosen). It's likely to be a high risk, high adventure endeavour.
dsq··on What Went Wrong at Saudi Arabia's Futuristic Metropolis in the Desert
It always sounded like the boondoggle to end all boondoggles.
dsq··on Acetaminophen improves cognitive and repeated high intensity maximal performance
I have noticed a spate of articles lately all claiming beneficial effects of aspirin, paracetamol and ibuprofen for preventimg dementia, improving performance, extending lifespan, etc. Not to say that's not the case, its just peculiar that there are so many articles/posts in the past few weeks.
dsq··on Ask HN: Are you convinced enough by Elon Musk's vision to go to Mars now? Why?
These plans always seem fanciful or wasteful at first. Any mission of exploration has always been met with derision. Based on past history, it will indeed take a long time for space colonies to break even, not to mention self sustaining or profitable.

Despite the caveats above, building a sustainable earth-to-orbit-to-various targets is probably the most significant thing that could happen in the next few decades.

dsq··on Ask HN: Are you convinced enough by Elon Musk's vision to go to Mars now? Why?
The title is slightly ambiguous, not sure if it's asking whether one should go oneself, or if its generally a good thing.
dsq··on Lucky young couple lands gig taking care of uninhabited Irish island
At first I thought it was a kind of snowed-in Overlook Hotel gig, but "Starting in April, the couple will spend six months living on this 1,100 acre island", so during summer. Also, not exactly uninhabited: "...five holiday cottages and a small café on Great Blasket, which the new caretakers will oversee".
dsq··on Why Rich People Don't Cover Their Windows
From how SA is described, sounds edgy all right. Not the place you'd want to be seen in your/spouse/kids PJs through the front window.
dsq··on Why Rich People Don't Cover Their Windows
Sounds like people feel secure, with law and order. The first thing you see in a less developed place is everything shut up tight. Even poor people have something that can be taken, like their children, or their bodily safety.
dsq··on Japan births fall to lowest in 125 years
Yes, FT is paywalled by default.
dsq··on Ringworlds and Dyson spheres can be stable
I (layperson, non physicist) never understood how the Dyson sphere would work. Anyone far from the equator would experience low to zero gravity and float off into the internal sun.
dsq··on Sweden Is Building the Largest City Made from Timber
I read an Astrid Lindgren children's book which had one of the characters die while saving his brother from a fire that burned part of the (Swedish) city.
