dsp_person··on Difftastic, a structural diff tool that understands syntax
Apparently ZFS 2.2.0 added an early abort capability for zstd compression. Maybe I'll switch over to it.
dsp_person··on Difftastic, a structural diff tool that understands syntax
Interesting that while the arch linux the package weighs in a 7MB, it extracts to 80MB installed, and the `difft` binary is a whole 78MB. On a ZFS dataset with LZ4 compression du says it's 17MB. I wonder why not just compress whatever is so compressible in the binary? It would probably even load faster to decompress it in ram.

dsp_person··on 6.2 GHz Intel Core I9-14900KS Review
When did CPUs break 5-6GHz? It feels surprising to see that high GHz number after being conditioned that "clock speed can't go up anymore, so number of cores go up" and not seeing anything much higher than 4GHz
dsp_person··on Nanofont3x4: Smallest readable 3x4 font with lowercase (2015)
Has anyone ever made the smallest (as in bytes) readable font? How small can the code be to generate a readable font? It could create an SVG, bitmap, or triangles in a shader.

dsp_person··on Nanofont3x4: Smallest readable 3x4 font with lowercase (2015)
> In case you are interested, there are a total of 65,536 4x4 monochrome glyphs. Here is a uber texture atlas that shows all of them with our glyphs highlighted (red) where they are in the table.

So did this font exist all along and was simply discovered?

And same goes for everything we create, but just in higher dimensions??

dsp_person··on TextSnatcher: Copy text from images, for the Linux Desktop
I was using something like this for awhile, but I found tesseract did poorly quite often. That resize trick didn't seem to affect much. I'm not sure what pre-processing would make it better.

I'd love to if TextSnatcher does anything to improve on this. The github page is opaque.

dsp_person··on Resolume
I'm curious about their DXV codec, but the info provided isn't that detailed. Also while ffmpeg has a decoder for it, the encoder is not open sourced.

Is there a VJing codec that does something like a mipmap for multiple resolutions? For example so you could easily switch from a 2x2 grid of 4K videos to a 200x200 grid of video tiles, without fully decoding 4K for each (more like reads from a 240p stream or smaller).

dsp_person··on YX Problem
I run into "XY Problem" the most when I'm googling X, usually the argument is in the arch linux forum or maybe reddit. It can be infuriating when yes I actually literally have my reasons for doing X, and seeing them dismissed. And then it's extra funny when someone does present the solution (Yes, thank you person!) and then the next response from an admin is something like "Learn not to necrobump. Thread locked". Uhg. Honestly, anytime I see the word necrobump, the info that was shared actually helped me out a lot. Such a dumb rule. I don't care about getting email notifications from 5 year old threads. A better solution for the hard-line no necrobumpers should be a auto-unsubscribe after N days feature. Or since they are such expert authorities I'm sure they could rig up a script or email filter to moderate their own feeds.
dsp_person··on Detect when your installed Chrome extensions have changed owners
Oh nice, TIL. Another push for me to switch to ff
dsp_person··on Detect when your installed Chrome extensions have changed owners
Won't the damage be done by the time you detect it? Extensions auto-update by default and there are only hacky ways to prevent this. This has always bothered me since just because I trust an extension now, doesn't mean I'll trust the next update that gets automatically applied.

dsp_person··on V Language Review (2023)
I've been comparing various projects in a particular domain and noticed that stars aren't the best indicator for adoption/maturity level. More interesting:

- number of contributors

- number of open/closed pull requests

- number of open/closed issues

Most of the time they scale with stars, but sometimes there will be 1k+ stars but only a few pull requests, which is odd.

dsp_person··on Why I Like Obsidian

dsp_person··on Ideal monitor rotation for programmers (2021)
+1 to that. Also get 120Hz if you can (but has it's own headaches to solve, including e.g. HDMI 2.1 isn't supported in open source drivers).

I recently started using a LG 42" C2. Coming from two 27" monitors at 2560x1440, the 42" 3840x2160 is about the same pixel density and only 12.5% more pixels total

  (3840*2160/(2*2560*1440))
The 42" screen is like portrait mode on demand. Whenever I tried portrait mode on the 27" screens, it was nice sometimes but usually felt limited in width. With the 42" a quick tile of a window to either side (Super+Left/Right) gives you the height of portrait mode, plus more width (and adjustable to your liking).

Also for those now spare 27" monitors kicking around, I grabbed a vertical monitor mount to stack them (both landscape, stacked vertically) next to the 42". This has proven to be even better and I love having the zones this creates.

dsp_person··on Microsoft defends Edge's predatory practices with cringe, audacious reply on X
Playing with Windows 11 on a laptop after being exclusively on KDE+Wayland and using Vivaldi, surprisingly I'm enjoying using Edge. Love the vertical tabs without needing any extensions. No crashes or struggles with accelerated graphics. And the "read aloud" selection and quality of voices is pretty impressive.

The Vivaldi new release has a session manager and workspace rules which might keep my main setup there for now. I think it's the only other game in town with vertical tabs, unless that Arc browser gets windows/linux availability

dsp_person··on OpenZFS 2.2: Block Cloning, Linux Containers, BLAKE3
Previous thread with discussion of the release candidate: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36588240

While block cloning isn't supported for encrypted datasets yet, looks like there is a WIP already: https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/pull/14705

Very cool to have the ability for near instant cp or mv between datasets or snapshot (at least locally; the links don't persist with send/recv?).

dsp_person··on Show HN: Building a 42-inch E-Ink frame for generative art
I remember seeing those Thinkpad X230 mods with an eink display and how a challenge was availability of the specific discontinued e-ink screen of the right size.

The mfg from the article has a 13.3" screen that would be fun to try a mod with: https://shopkits.eink.com/en/product/detail/13.3''ePaperDisp...

and impressive 1600 x 1200 pixels

dsp_person··on How we manage 200 open-source repos
A question for people here saying "use a monorepo", and coming from a different direction than that of the article. Say I want to use a monorepo for all code I write for personal use and development, but I'll have a folder with dozens of projects cloned from github often with small tweaks and custom branches. Is the solution submodules? Saving patches or just code-snippets in the monorepo and keeping the random misc repos isolated? Hardlink specific files of interest?
dsp_person··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
Also curious to hear about your setup. Using whisper too? When I was experimenting with it there was still a lot of annoyance about hallucinations and I was hard coding some "if last phrase is 'thanks for watching', ignore last phrase"

I was just googling a bit to see what's out there now for whisper/llama combos and came across this: https://github.com/yacineMTB/talk

There's a demo linked on the github page that seems relatively fast at responding conversationally, but still maybe 1-2 seconds at times. Impressive it's entirely offline.
