dsawler··on Ask HN: Whar are some productivity hacks you use?
Every time I think of something I have to do, I put it in my Todoist Inbox.

Every night I go through my Inbox and decide what needs to get done tomorrow. I assign a 'tomorrow' date for those tasks in my Inbox. Then, I go to Google Calendar and timeblock when I'm going to complete those tasks. After I do this I journal about my day and come up with more things that I want to get done and the process repeats every day.

dsawler··on Product Design of the Stripe Dashboard for iPhone
Hey, thanks for writing this.

Your article talks a lot about the nuances of the app (prototyping animation, specifically) but I'm curious how you were able to distill the experience down to 2 primary use cases - did this come from research, data, customers saying this is what they intend to use the app for?

Did you test any of this with your existing customers? If so, how did you go about that process?

dsawler··on What Design at a Startup Actually Looks Like [video]
Depends where you work. At a large-ish digital creative agency you're probably stuck in PS creating 100 comps. At the small-ish digital creative agency I'm at the visual designers still use PS because that's where their comfortable but we talk about changing that all the time. I'm an interaction designer and use Axure for very detailed prototypes or some front-end framework (Foundation) for quick things.
dsawler··on What Design at a Startup Actually Looks Like [video]
As an interaction designer I really liked watching this. I don't work for a startup but this is often how quick internal reviews go with a project team member at my company, as well; discovering unique scenarios you need to design for while talking through other issues.
dsawler··on Optimization at the Obama campaign: a/b testing
I imagine users going directly to a site like barackobama.com or xcandidate.com would be more inclined to read, not skim. It might be as simple as "this guy is running for President, maybe I should read this stuff."
dsawler··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2012)
Page not found.
dsawler··on Ask HN: Are tech companies becoming more unrealistic in hiring?
I don't know if I agree with this. I think it's important for different members of the (small) team to interview someone they potentially, and most likely, will be working with. I'm a designer, but I would want to talk to someone interviewing as a PM, analyst or dev, since that makes up my team on any given client project.
dsawler··on Ask HN - Do you use hunger for productivity? (Life Hacking)
These IF programs, like leangains, do not require you to fast during the day and only feed at night... it's up to you when you would like to do it; That's the beauty of it.
dsawler··on Ask HN: codecademy, or LPTHW?
LPTHW, without a doubt. I've tried everything out there - codecademy, udacity, coursera, codeschool, khan, etc. Nothing has taught me as well as LPTHW -- probably from just repetition of exercises alone.
dsawler··on Markupwand (YC S12) Takes The Pain Out Of Translating Photoshop Files To HTML
I don't understand how people are still designing for the web in an image manipulation application. There are so many other tools out there today to get you to a design much quicker than Photoshop.
dsawler··on Can't Code? Learn Design.
I think "great design can't be tested" is wrong. All design has consequence. If I make an add to cart button on an ecommerce site purple, I can test that to see if it performs better than the red add to cart button. Yes, these decisions (of choosing red or purple) can come from a designer understanding his/her audience, but should never be just taken at the designer's word... it should always be tested to make sure the designed solution is the right one.
dsawler··on Can't Code? Learn Design.
I don't like to separate visual from UX. UX is top level, while user research, visuals, information architecture, for example, are branches. You cannot design UX, only design for it.

If I'm working on user research I need to understand the people (user groups) who use the product and how they use it. If I'm working on interaction design, I need to understand how each interaction takes place, what problem it's solving, what that means for the user, and how it effects anything else. If I'm working on visuals/graphics, I need to design the product/features/interactions in an aesthetically pleasing way that still targets the user groups.

dsawler··on What is a front-end developer?
But is a web designer a visual/graphic designer as well?
dsawler··on Khan Academy: Computer Science
This. Exactly. I was really confused. I've been trying to learn JS on an off for about a year. When I was shown the new CS program at Khan Academy today, I was instantly confused because...I was drawing pictures using processing.js. So..was I learning javascript or was I learning this processing.js that runs on top of javascript? As a beginner, I think it's super important you clarify this.
dsawler··on Ask HN: Places to advertise for a UI/UX Designer?
Authentic Jobs, 37signals, elegant.ly
dsawler··on Acunote (YC W11) Takes On Project Management With A Gmail-Like Interface
Tons and tons of sites use the 3-4 column approach to showcasing plans and pricing Here are just a few: http://patterntap.com/search/pricing

In terms of styling, you're right, it's very close to 37signals.

dsawler··on Acunote (YC W11) Takes On Project Management With A Gmail-Like Interface
Also like every other site out there. It's the most generic way to showcase pricing and plans.
dsawler··on Ask HN: I'm 23 and got a contract to write my first book, on HTML5, any advice?
Seconded. Read "On Writing Well" -- write something, cut it in half, then cut that in half, and then once again cut that in half.
dsawler··on Chromebox
I can't even figure out what it is/does.

"The Chromebox is a fast, compact home or office device." That means nothing to me.

dsawler··on The Software Developer’s Guide to Fitness & Morning Productivity
Dropping carbs dramatically after living a life where you ate a normal/high amount of carbs is going to, most likely, make you miserable. If decreasing your carbs is of interest to you, do so slowly over time.
dsawler··on How I lost 10% body fat, while launching a startup (and raising kids)
Of course there are other ways, it's called not eating crap.
dsawler··on How I lost 10% body fat, while launching a startup (and raising kids)
Interesting. However, if they serve sandwiches, perhaps they also have "grilled chicken cutlet sandwich". If they do, no harm in just asking for the chicken and whatever other toppings you like (cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc.)
dsawler··on How I lost 10% body fat, while launching a startup (and raising kids)
Places that focus on bread, pasta and rice are usually chain-food places (Panera, Chipotle, etc). Find a deli that will give you a chicken breast + veggies -- there are at least 4 near my New Jersey suburban office building that do this.
dsawler··on How I lost 10% body fat, while launching a startup (and raising kids)
Getting exercise is a must, for anyone. It has nothing to do with whether you have a start-up or not.
dsawler··on How Codecademy (YC S11) Snagged 200,000 Users in Seven Days
Absolutely.
dsawler··on How Codecademy (YC S11) Snagged 200,000 Users in Seven Days
I'm a web designer who really wants to learn JS to be able to fully implement my designs on the front end (I know HTML/CSS and can edit a jQuery script to fit my needs). I feel I am in their target market, or close to it, but they failed at keeping me a student. I stopped going to Codecademy because I could no longer understand the instructions, and because it was buggy. I often had to ask my boyfriend, who is an engineer, to explain the instructions to me because they were so hard to understand for someone with a very limited programming background.

I've started with Udacity CS101 and it's much better. I still think the instruction from the professor isn't the greatest, but it's good enough for me to be able to keep progressing, even if it means I have to repeat a unit to understand the concepts.

dsawler··on Show HN: Github for Designers
Oh, that's great. Those are the only two I use :) Excited to try this out!
dsawler··on Show HN: Github for Designers
Is this only for Photoshop? What about Fireworks or Illustrator?

When I click for an invitation, I get an Application Error (An error occurred in the application and your page could not be served. Please try again in a few moments.

dsawler··on What The Heck Is Responsive Web Design?
This is said a lot, and I have to disagree. The content I serve to someone on a large monitor is going to be different than what I serve up to someone on mobile because I understand what the different needs and desires are for the user groups on each device, not because anything else is noise and filler.
dsawler··on What The Heck Is Responsive Web Design?
I couldn't take Responsive that article on mobiforge seriously once I read this "Responsive design does not lend itself well to low-end devices since the same block of HTML is delivered to all devices, large or small. The much vaunted Boston Globe site, a responsive design tour de force, does not work well or at all on popular phones such as the Motorola RAZR or Nokia 6100."

Come on.
