ds··on Amsterdam's Plan: If You Buy a Newly Built House, You Can't Rent It Out
I have no comment on if this is good or bad, I am just curious how laws like this get passed in the first place. You would assume that most home owners would not be in favor of something like this, as it obviously would seek to decrease the value of their property by reducing the potential acquirers. The only thing that would make sense is if in Amsterdam, most voters rent vs own.
ds··on Slack enables customers to control their encryption keys in enterprise version
The admin just changes the email address than does a forgot password recovery. You dont need SSO/special integrations. You can do this on a vanilla slack install to any user.

bingo. The admin just changes the email address than does a forgot password recovery. This works without SSO/special integrations. You can do this on a vanilla slack install to any user.

I am not sure slack can ever meaningfully become encrypted while having persistence. All it takes is for a admin (or hacked admin account) to change the password of the target slack user and login as said user to view all their private messages. The encryption is mostly pointless as far as I can tell when all of it is circumvented by a changed password.
ds··on Launch HN: Point (YC W19) – First Debit Card with Points
Ive always wanted a better credit card to be honest. Something that had a insane amount of transfer partners, similar to how the starwood preferred guest card used to be. Something as simple as 1 point per dollar on everything and 2 points per dollar on dining/gas. The ability to also throw in the benefits that amex/chase cards offer would also be awesome (lounge access, return protection, roadside assistance, etc..) - I would switch to a card like that instantly. Im currently stuck putting all my spend on a American Airlines card, just because all the other options suck.

Now, with that said. I wouldn't use this product. Its not listed what the 'points' they give you do, so i can only imagine its nowhere near the value of being able to transfer them directly to airline or hotel partners. Im guessing its either a built in travel portal redemption they host or simply cashback. Either option is pretty garbage compared to other redemptions.

The interest is standard if you have a private bank, so its nice they give it to common folk, although i think many banks offer this now.

But most importantly, Using a debit card is risky. It lacks the chargeback and other protections a credit card has. (I could be wrong here, but I know it used to be this way a few years ago)

Anyways, dont take this as a negative guys. If anything, please continue improving your product and I will be a user. As it stands though, Its still lagging behind existing players.

ds··on Oregon expected to enact first state-wide rent control law
I can easily explain this.

Two buildings are for sale. They are identical in rental income, quality, etc.. and cost the same.

The only difference between the two buildings is that one has enormous restrictions on how you own and operate the building. You as a landlord will have a cap on your potential upside in rent, but NO cap in the downside.

Which building will you buy, all other facts equal? Unless you are insane, it will be the non rent-controlled building. As such, the price of the rent-controlled building will have to be lowered to compete for a sale. Hence lower prices.

ds··on Oregon expected to enact first state-wide rent control law
There is more consensus on Rent Control being harmful than there is on global warming. Its absolutely insane that it would be enacted.

The solutions to expensive housing is complicated, obviously. Its about zoning, cancelling out NIMBYism, incentivizing affordable housing and basically matching supply with demand.

Rent control simply doesn't work. For any person it helps, it will disadvantage 10x more in the process.

I wonder if they are putting in vacancy controls as well. That would have the 1-2 punch of not only reducing rental stock but also significantly lowering property values (and property taxes in the process)

ds··on Microsoft Is Worth as Much as Apple. How Did That Happen?
Hogwash. The worth of a company is what someone will pay for it. Thats literally the definition of the market cap. Trying to say "But these shares are overvalued right now!" means nothing. The value of anything is what someone will pay for it- Just ask the guy walking in the desert what he will pay for a bottle of water.

ds··on Ask HN: FU Money: What is your number?
About 10m. Invest that into 'safe' assets that only produce 3% a year, but do so with low risk and low overheard.

300k a year is about the right number to do everything you want to do if you are a family. Buy whatever cars you want (within reason) - travel when you want, eat what you want, live where you want. Thats the definition of FU money.

You can do it for less, but its not FU money if you have to worry about possibly losing your fortune.

Kids/family increases the number obviously, if they go to private school/college- Add 50k/yr per kid to that figure above.

ds··on Chrome's insane password security strategy
Nobody doubts that adding a master password will stop nobody who knows what they are doing. If someone has access to your computer and wants to do damage, they have full access to do it.

However, keep in mind 'open door' syndrome. A crime of opportunity is very different than one of bad intentions. Leave a car unlocked with a $20 bill on the seat and you might find that $20 gone when you return. Now, if you lock the doors the odds are it will still be there when you return. The fact is that when you increase the barrier to doing evil, many give it up. A potentially honest person might open a door and take something but if they must now break a window to accomplish the same task many will not pursue it.

Having to potentially download a third party program to decrypt the password DB and/or run additional commands is very different that just navigating to the chrome settings page. Its almost akin to why so many coworkers always jacked each others wallpaper when they forgot to lock their computer. They could have still done it even though the computer was locked, but they did not because it was too much work.

Also, going off what you have said, the "locking" process in windows is pointless since it offers a false sense of security. It can be broken just by rebooting the computer with a boot disk, right? So why include it? Because its useful.

ds··on John McAfee arrested in Guatemala
What a sad situation. Its obvious that McAfee is in a state of mania. Its been widely documented that he has extensive abuse issues with bath salt type of drugs which are about as paranoia-inducing as possible.

Regardless of his guilt in killing his neighbor, he truly needs professional help. Going long periods as he is can have serious long-term effects.

Also, this is not someone to idolize. He fled from the US to avoid a wrongful death lawsuit.
