dryanau··on Reddit Strike Has Started
Reddit of all platforms should know this, having risen to prominence on the heels of Digg v4
dryanau··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
Not true for my brother MFC. It mow refuses to accept generic toner.
dryanau··on Quite OK Audio Format
Feels like it gets posted every other week.
dryanau··on It doesn’t take much to make machine-learning algorithms go awry
I enjoyed the small bit of humor about a language model endorsing The Economist.
dryanau··on Bing’s A.I. Chat: ‘I Want to Be Alive. ’
You can really tell that it's a chatbot pretty quickly. The repetition, ending each paragraph with emojis, and ending the response with some questions, gets tired fast.
dryanau··on The thinnest video on YouTube [video]
Works fine on an S21 Ultra.

What's he talking about with the yellow colours though??

dryanau··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
It wouldn't. But not because it's offensive. It is making a joke about the sympathizer's awkwardness, which is making it about yourself. A straightforward sorry for your loss is always best.
dryanau··on The Sad State of Debug Performance in C++
Also, if you write

> return std::move(ret);

it can interfere with return value optimisation (RVO). There might be cases where the move makes sense but to my understanding it's enough to just use return.

It's very much possible to take advantage of modern C++ move semantics without an explicit call to move. Maybe you return a unique_ptr created by make_unique in a factory method, or call swap() on a moveable object, etc. I rarely need to write std::move to take advantage of modern C++ although it took some self-education about rvalues etc to learn how to do it.

dryanau··on I fooled millions into thinking chocolate helps weight loss (2015)
I don't think it's particularly fair to push the responsibility of peer review onto journalists. Given that the state of diet science is in bad shape, I suppose journalists should be conscious of this fact and do their due diligence, but ultimately this is a failing of the academic world more so than the journalistic one.
dryanau··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
Could you explain this a bit more please? (I'm not from the US so I'm possibly missing something but your comment is surprising at a broad strokes level)

Edit: I see you've edited your post already with a quote which is helpful.

dryanau··on Artificial neural networks today are not conscious (Douglas Hofstadter)
Honestly don't know if this is a joke or not. The inclusion of that letter to the editor about AI's self-consciousness is almost too ironically good/terrifying/funny. Kind of a perfect response, to the point where it seems like a human wrote it as a joke, except that GPT-3 is really quite good at generating this stuff too now so I'm not sure.
dryanau··on Mygov is a ‘huge disappointment,’ key architect despairs
I switched to beta a month or so and I can't even tell what the difference is, other than it being slightly shinier.

MyGov just seems like a portal containing bookmarks to various other services anyway, right? It consolidates your records for Medicare, ATO, and if applicable, NDIS, Centrelink etc. Seems kind of basic. Although I understand there's a lot of hidden complexity underneath these things, especially surrounding ID verification. But even so, I couldn't tell you the difference between the old mygov and the beta version.
