drxzcl··on NGINX Proxy Manager
I love traefik, but getting started is kinda rough if you’re not quite technical. There are like three different places to put configuration, and even getting informative error messages out of the thing it’s not exactly trivial.

But once it works, it works.

drxzcl··on Top navy admiral wants rust-free ships
Also, large armies have been vehicles of social change since napoleonic times at least. You bring young men from all over the country together, from different backgrounds and different social classes, and have them depend on each other for their very survival.

The GP is either an outright troll, or has bought into a political propaganda version of what armed forces are like.

drxzcl··on Announcing GPT-NeoX-20B
Humans assign a lot of, well, meaning to meaning. It turns out that you can get a really good score on tasks that superficially you would think require actual understanding without programming any of that in.

Does this mean the neural network has learned about meaning? Does that mean that it has just gotten really good at faking it? Does is mean that meaning itself doesn't really exist, and it's just a shorthand for advanced pattern matching? Does it matter?

Honestly, we don't know. But we've been thinking about it for a very long time. See for example the famous Chinese Room thought experiment:

I have no opinion on whether they are “evil”, but they certainly are causing actual harm to actual people. Religion is not a license to avoid accountability of this fact.
drxzcl··on Firefox 94
There are a lot of Mozilla developers and users that are directly harmed by legislation like this or are close to people that are directly harmed. “You might not realize” that these people also hold very strong beliefs about this.

He displayed extremely poor judgement. The fact that it was a personal donation does not exempt him from accountability.

drxzcl··on Japan needs a lot more tech workers. Can it find a place for women?
It's not the 1950's anymore. In any job where workers have a modicum of bargaining power, it's perfectly fine. This goes treble for tech, which skews younger, less conservative and suffers from severe labor scarcity.

You can probably have the game output custom-made data to serve as an input for the subsequent NN and skip a whole bunch of lighting calculations.
drxzcl··on Google to stop selling ads based on your specific web browsing
Maybe, but the ads I get on Facebook are a horror show of not really interesting almost garbage offerings. For all the data they have, they do a piss poor job of presenting me with enticing opportunities.

I’ll take context/search relevant ads on google and Adsense every day.

drxzcl··on Bitcoin and Pollution – The Definitive Answer
Please elaborate.

I understand the bitcoin holders can just sell and move to another chain/coin, but a mass exodus would effectively destroy their stored value as there will be way more sellers than buyers. So the miners can essentially keep doing what they are doing as long as they don't bleed off too many users.

drxzcl··on Bitcoin and Pollution – The Definitive Answer
The author posits that Bitcoin will move to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system soon, but I am doubtful.

How would Bitcoin move to a PoS system? The miners directly determine what happens on the network by the very nature of the mining process and the miners have a vested interest in PoW. The other people in the Bitcoin universe mostly use it as a store of value (and would benefit from PoS) but their value is essentially held hostage by the miners.

Or am I overlooking something here?

drxzcl··on How to Eliminate the Dreaded “Blind Spot”
I was taught (in the Netherlands) to hold the door with your right hand while you release the latch with the left. The benefit is not only turning the torso to see cyclists, but also holding on to the door in case there's a gust of wind.

The latter has saved the neighbor's car door a number of times.

drxzcl··on Women Die More from Heart Attacks Than Men Unless ER Doc Is Female
That's the point I'm trying to make. You instinctively feel that the exchanged version isn't the same. That the exchanged version isn't kosher. Now try and figure out why. You are already halfway there.
drxzcl··on Women Die More from Heart Attacks Than Men Unless ER Doc Is Female
What what?

That's what you took away from the article?

drxzcl··on Women Die More from Heart Attacks Than Men Unless ER Doc Is Female
If you change the words, you change the meaning.

Let's try and get to the bottom of why the swapped version is meaningfully different. What makes "men" and "women" fundamentally different in this context, so much so that they can't be exchanged without significantly altering the effect of the headline?

drxzcl··on Learning to program is getting harder
It still does.

I mean, it pokes the keyboard controller in order allow the processor to control an additional bus line to the memory controller. Then, thanks to 8086’s overlappping segmentation architecture, you can access 65519 additional bytes that were never intended to be there in the first place.

There’s Cthulhu mythos that is more acc si le than that.

drxzcl··on Ask HN: What do you look for in an applicant's GitHub?
If I'm investing the time to look at her/his github, I have probably already invited the candidate over for an interview, or am seriously considering doing so. I'm looking for anything that gives me an insight into the way the candidate approaches problems, than I can then use to further the interview.

Any github that contains more than just course work is fine for that.
