drxzcl··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
Same as you handle uptime on anything else: you use monitoring software.

If people need to tell you your services are down, you end up eating a huge amount of downtime.

drxzcl··on When did Google get so weird?
Google has been really bad at this “exact remembered text” thing for at least a few years before the AI summaries made an appearance. They deliberately decided to trade precision for… something. I’m not sure what.

If anyone can direct me to a search engine that will actually let me query the index directly with multi word queries, I’d be delighted. DuckDuckGo seems to be a bit better, but not much.

drxzcl··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
Chess is not solved in any meaningful sense of the term. Computers have been better than humans since the 90s, but better chess programs are released all the time.
drxzcl··on A note on subscription prices from LWN
It’s a direct quote.

Calls of "you should allow free speech" invariable actually mean "I should be allowed to harass your members".

I enjoy spaces that are at least semi-moderated.

Food and shelter if nothing else. Gotta pay the upkeep on the meat robots!
drxzcl··on Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
I've had no end of trouble registering an account on our corporate SIMs as the phone numbers (not the actual SIM cards) had been recycled as employees leave.
drxzcl··on Fastpotify
That seems like the kind of name that's gonna earn you a C&D.
drxzcl··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
Except I said nothing of the sort. I said the opposite.

Jupiter, Neptune and earth in your example dominate the gravity of their orbit by locking the smaller bodies into orbital reasonances.

It’s not a vague criterium. It might be an irrelevant one if you are interested in geophysics, but it’s concrete and testable.

drxzcl··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
Trans-neptunian objects, including Pluto, are in orbital resonance. They owe their stable orbits to the existence of Neptune.

It’s like saying Jupiter is not a planet because the Trojans exist.

> “One of the biggest flaws with the IAU definition is that you can have the same object in two different orbits,” says Kornfeld. “In one, it’s considered a planet, and in the other, it’s not considered a planet.”

So… planet Ganymede when? Or Titan?

drxzcl··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
It’s not exactly an astronomy book. It’s more a memoir of an astronomer. But it’s funny and very well written.

Also, if you have the opportunity too see @plutokiller teach planetary science or give a lecture, I can recommend you do so!

drxzcl··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
It’s still there. Where it always was.
drxzcl··on Small Models Have Arrived
We call it Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff. I guess it's a generation thing.
drxzcl··on Windows 9x Subsystem for Linux
The agent will happily fix that for them. They are through like that.
drxzcl··on The Abstraction Fallacy: Why AI can simulate but not instantiate consciousness
But what would we consider conscious?

My position is that there is no actual, definitive answer to that question, and therefore it makes no sense engaging with the concept.

drxzcl··on The Abstraction Fallacy: Why AI can simulate but not instantiate consciousness
I can make an AI system with a survival instinct right now. Of course, all that will do is make people tell me “it’s not a proper survival instinct” or move the goal posts and tell me I need yet some other property.

This whole endeavor is doomed from the beginning. There is no crucial test for “consciousness”, just ad hoc criteria people come up with to land on the conclusions that leave their belief system intact.

Consciousness is not a concept that can be rendered operational.

drxzcl··on The Abstraction Fallacy: Why AI can simulate but not instantiate consciousness
That’s fair. I’ll delete.
drxzcl··on Book review: There Is No Antimemetics Division
You can’t forget to take class W mnestics. Not unless someone prevents you from taking them.
drxzcl··on I'm a laptop weirdo and that's why I like my new Framework 13
All the stores I can get to within a reasonable time period stock ISO keyboards instead of ANSI, and I've never really warmed up to those. So I'm stuck with next-day even for macs.
drxzcl··on Adafruit: Arduino’s Rules Are ‘Incompatible With Open Source’
As an aside, I have never seen a decent license for user generated content. Either they expose the platform to serious liability, or they come across as incredibly predatory.
drxzcl··on Windows drive letters are not limited to A-Z
Wait, what's the story of the sailboat trip? My searches are coming up empty, but it sounds like a great story.
drxzcl··on Pasta Cooking Time
The north sea is 34 grams per litre. The Mediterranean is 38. For my pasta I use 10, and that's on the high end.
drxzcl··on What's happening with founders over 40?
Honestly? I think they are just rationalizing away their respective midlife crises.
drxzcl··on Grok-2 Beta Release
Again, you are ignoring the identity based systems they describe, that have been in place for centuries before either of them were born.

You know which ones I mean.

drxzcl··on Grok-2 Beta Release
The guys closing polling places in black neighbourhoods? The guys denying women and trans people healthcare?

Identity politics has always been a conservative project.

drxzcl··on Regular Glucosamine Use and Mortality
It’s 500k people for over a decade. If any study has the data to do it, it’s this one.
drxzcl··on How ECMO is redefining death
Not to downplay the dilemmas we face today, it seems to me that the main problem is that the machine is too expensive, too complicated and too large to serve as a permanent heart/lung replacement.

We have an excellent record of making machines smaller, cheaper and simpler to operate. This machine will be the pacemaker of the future.

drxzcl··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
You generally enroll a passkey for a single device or connected group of devices. My icloud-syncing devices has a passkey. My windows laptop has another. My desktop has yet another. I have also enrolled my yubikey.

I could stop using my idevices tomorrow and not be negatively influenced.

Plagiarism is not a legal thing. Copyright infringement is, but that’s a different beast.
