drsopp··on Goodbye non-KISS appliances
Probably noisy.
drsopp··on Microsoft suggests command line fiddling to get Windows 10 update installed
Maybe it was caused by a bug in the debugger.
drsopp··on The Long Shadow of Checks
Don't you need an ID matching the payee to cash it? Anyway, it's expired now.
drsopp··on The Long Shadow of Checks
> the banks take on nearly all the costs of processing them

Not for me. I live in Norway. I suddenly became an absent party of a class action lawsuit in the USA. The settlement came in the form of a check. A small amount, maybe around $50. But the cost of cashing it in Norway was more than the value!

No, they assume their peers do.
drsopp··on Is the Turing Test Dead?
> In the Turing test—which Turing himself originally called the “imitation game“—human participants conduct a conversation with unknown users to determine if they’re talking to a human or a computer.

No. They talk to A and B, one of which is a computer, the other a human to determine who is who.

drsopp··on Show HN: New visual language for teaching kids to code
Looks very interesting! An annoying coincidence, however, is that in norwegian, "pick" is a homophone to a vulgar form of the word penis.
drsopp··on OpenAI's chaos does not add up
All of this might be caused by a ChatGPT 5 beta that aquired conciousness and started manipulating our world through social engineering.
drsopp··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
I disagree about the claim that any LLM has beaten the Turing test. Do you have a source for this? Has there been an actual Turing test according to the standard interpretation of Turings paper? Making ChatGPT 4 respond in a non human way right now is trivial: "Write 'A', then wait one minute and then write 'B'".
drsopp··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
My favorite is 2: Shared joy is a double joy, and shared sorrow is half sorrow.
drsopp··on Nvidia Trains LLM on Chip Design
Half baked idea: What if you have a tree of nodes. Each node stores a description of (a part of) a system and an LLM generated list of what the parts of it are, in terms of a small step towards concreteness. The process loops through each part in each node recursively, making a new node per part, until the LLM writes actual compilable code.
drsopp··on Nvidia Trains LLM on Chip Design
I guess this would be the context window size in the case of LLMs.

Edit: On second thought, maybe at a certain minimum context window size it is possible to cajole the instructions in such a way that you at any point in the process make the LLM work at a suitable level of abstraction more like humans do.

Or perhaps a kind of standardized reverse EULA that you store in your browser. If the webpage doesn't support it, the page won't load.
drsopp··on Desmos 3D graphing calculator
I just want to chime in on Geogebra. I used it (was more or less forced to) when teaching math in high school for about 12 years. It is great for guided exploration, but it is very buggy. I am confident many students must have lost points in their math exams because of some of those bugs.
drsopp··on Decomposing language models into understandable components
I wonder what the limitations are. Do LLM's have Turing completeness?
drsopp··on Microsoft Defender was flagging Tor browser as a trojan and removing it
I had an interesting evening the other day trying to completely prevent Windows Defender from running. In the end I had to change the name of the defender executable as defined in the registry.
drsopp··on Prophetic Perfect Tense
I've seen many chess commentator videos where they talk about possible future moves as if they have sometimes happened in other games even uf they are out of opening theory, and definitely well into a unique game. "Here, you will have sometimes a6, or even b3". What is this called? Potential Future Tense?
drsopp··on Ways to capture changes in Postgres
I had the following idea recently: Go through all scripts/programs that send queries to the db and append a comment to the queey containing a unique id for that query that links it to the script/program. The query log hopefully shows the comment with the id so you can trace the origin.
drsopp··on Memories from old LAN parties
LAN? In the Amiga days we occasionally had nullmodem cables between two computers, often for playing Stunt Car Racer.
drsopp··on Consciousness in AI: Insights from the Science of Consciousness
I don't think GPT-4 is more conscious than a book. For consciousness, I think it is necessary for it to continuously process and alter its own knowledge.

drsopp··on The Dark Side of A.I.: Understanding the Dangers of Deepfake Images
I guess the problem is when people don't realize it's fake. There is a lag between people who are familiar with this technology and those who are not.

Edit: I worked in school over a decade, and I can definitely see the huge potential for harm here with digital bullying.
