droopyEyelids··on Teacher Pay and per Student Spending
Id like to see a comparison between unionized and non-union teachers.

My hunch would be that some unions did well and others didnt, but it would still be difficult to understand the data without comparing to the tax base regions for the school.

droopyEyelids··on California Senate Passes Bill Requiring Passive Speed Limiters
It seems like you’d want to address every one of the variables.

If thats true wouldnt addressing an easy one of them be a way to start?

droopyEyelids··on On the trail of my identity thief
The detour into anti-bail-reform talking points was a sour note in this article.

It sucks that the criminal skipped bail, so without bail reform that would have only been allowed if she passed a certain threshold of wealth. Thats not mentioned because its clearly not a better outcome.

droopyEyelids··on I'm a Former Surgeon General and I Couldn't Believe My $10k Medical Bill
Infusion medicine isn't given in the normal gravity-fed IV route, they're precisely controlled for flow rate and time. It's a whole other ball game.
droopyEyelids··on Justice Department formally moves to reclassify marijuana
Surprised no one is telling you that countries face enormous trade pressure and potentially sanctions if they don't follow the USA's lead on drug legalization status.
droopyEyelids··on Justice Department formally moves to reclassify marijuana
It wasn't silly, it was a deliberate choice to hurt politically undesirable demographics.
droopyEyelids··on Measuring the impact of zoning on housing in a city
Would love if this could be built into a website that could analyze the distortions on any city automatically. probably a lot of issues getting an normalizing the data though.
droopyEyelids··on What’s the difference between an -ectomy, an -ostomy, and an -otomy? (1986)
Finding equivalent idioms in different languages is one of the most fun things to do with LLMs.

One of the tricky parts, if you plan to actually use the idioms, is that they very greatly between different regions that use the same language. Particularly tricky with Spanish, considering so many countries on so many different continents use it. I haven't found LLMs to be good at knowing what regions use any given expression.

Have you noticed any correlation between how hungry you are and how fast motion sickness kicks in?
droopyEyelids··on Scientists Find an 'Alphabet' in Whale Songs
How would we train the LLM to actually decode it though? Don't we need some way to weigh the results?
droopyEyelids··on U.S. Rules Apple Illegally Interrogated Staff and Confiscated Union Flyers
I’m not even sure that it is irrational exactly. The owners of a company want to believe and behave as if they own the company. Its their toy to do with as they please.

Unionization changes the fundamental facts of ownership. The owner no longer do as they please, they must consult the representatives of their labor force.

That is a fundamental shift in how the business operates and the rights that the owners enjoy

You could charitably assume that media companies don’t want to admit or publicize this ideological bias.

Media companies have an oversized impact on what the people of the country think and discuss

droopyEyelids··on A company is building a giant compressed-air battery in the Australian outback
Salt water is a nightmare to include in any sort of mechanical system. It is super corrosive itself, enables galvanic corrosion, and is so “fertile” biologic fouling is a big issue.
droopyEyelids··on Read the wild email Tesla is sending to suppliers amid Supercharger chaos
Any big company’s SAP/oracle/dynamics system should absolutely have a list of active suppliers and tge contacts at those suppliers

droopyEyelids··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
Paypal has a really obnoxious failed implementation of passkeys where if you have totp configured, their login flow takes you to TOTP after your passkey auth.

If you want your passkey to “just work” you have to turn off TOTP. But thats a bad idea because passkeys are an alternate method of auth with paypal, not a replacement for passwords. So then you are left with the option of a password only sign in (no TOTP) or a passkey.

droopyEyelids··on No one buys books
Reading, if you’re good at it, is the most sophisticated and powerful form of storytelling, allowing detail and scope far beyond movies or games. And writing is far more accessible and cheaper than any other form of media creation. I think thats the magic.

But it has such a high requirement of education and practice, and demands such a high price in focus and attention. Its no wonder that it doesnt fit most people’s lives.

droopyEyelids··on Our biggest ever river catch?
Any parent can see that "outsourcing externalities" is the default way of thinking of all humans.

Accounting for your externalities is something you have learn, and there is no guarantee individuals or societies learn it.

droopyEyelids··on Ford Mustang Mach-E using BlueCruise at time of crash: NTSB
The eye tracking with blue cruise is really strict. It made me realize how much I took my eyes off the road before I had it. Even my 'glances' at the instrument panel often exceeded the warning threshold.

droopyEyelids··on Animal-free egg protein startup Onego Bio is closer to cracking the egg market
Also I'm under the impression that eggs are the cheapest way to get protein, in both money and impact to the environment. I had read that an ovo-vegetarian diet has a smaller carbon footprint than a pure vegan one.
droopyEyelids··on Anger is eliminated with the disposal of a paper written because of provocation
Anger can give you the energy to address an uncomfortable issue that would otherwise remain suppressed. For example your partner doesn't do the dishes. You become angry and confront your partner on the subject.

Now there is an opportunity for you two to work through the issue, and the partner has to feel some of the emotional impact of their behavior, preventing them from dismissing it.

If that issue remained unaddressed, you might deal with the stress by reducing your view of your partner as a capable thoughtful individual, which is a much harder situation to address than a difficult emotional conversation.

droopyEyelids··on Deaths at a California skydiving center, but the jumps go on
Light on details.

Would be nice to know how this compares to the death rates at other centers, and who packed the chute.

Maybe some regulation could be helpful to ensure postmortems happen so other divers can learn from the tragedy like with aviation
