driverdan··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
> oldschool lead-acid are much cheaper

Source? Last time I checked a few years ago the prices were similar and lithium has dropped significantly since then.

driverdan··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
No one questions the technical achievements of the SR-71. It doesn't make any sense to try to resurrect them though.
driverdan··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
How is this jeering? I'm pointing out important facts about one of the subjects in the story that weren't included. I didn't celebrate or express my opinion. Should I have worded it in a different way?

It does suck for everyone else who didn't vote for this and I feel for them.

driverdan··on When did Google get so weird?
I reproduced this: https://i.imgur.com/8mulr3I.png

I didn't highlight anything either, that's Google's doing.

driverdan··on When did Google get so weird?
I don't mean their own LLM generated response to the query. I mean websites in the SERP. A lot are auto generated LLM slop. DDG isn't doing anything to filter out this low quality junk from their index.
driverdan··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
The same can be said for most tech companies during the dotcom boom.
driverdan··on When did Google get so weird?
Unfortunately DDG sucks now too. Most of the top results are LLM generated slop.
driverdan··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
It sounds like doing the homework is a form of practice exercises for the quizzes.
driverdan··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
That's far superior than running an outdated general computing platform. Electromechanical devices are simple, easy to understand, and replaceable. It may be harder to diagnose problems but with maintenance it will work forever.
driverdan··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
> That’s roughly the same as someone running Windows 10 today

While true the situation is different. Hardware and software moved a lot faster in the 90's and early 2000's. Everything has matured, is far more standardized, and moves more slowly now. Hardware from 11 years ago when Win10 was released isn't that different from today's hardware. Same goes for Win10 and Win11.

driverdan··on HERMES radio enables voice and data communication over vast distances
It's not unheard of but is unfortunately rare. The FCC sent a nastygram to one of the 7.200 nuts recently.
driverdan··on Flock is rolling out a voluntary severance program
And Garry Tan has repeatedly defended Flock and badmouthed people who oppose them.
driverdan··on ChatGPT now knows what you do on other websites via ad collector
> Something like it is basically a requirement if you want to see digital ads.

It is not a requirement and no one wants to see ads.

driverdan··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Do those rates hold across multiple videos over a period of time? I've seen at least one case where someone did an A/B test of an AI thumbnail and the reason his engagement went up because everyone hated it and was commenting to say as much.
driverdan··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
> not real artist tools

Nice no true Scotsman fallacy. PS is a "real" artist tool.

driverdan··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
Can you provide more details? Do you mean 100 public cameras anyone can access?
driverdan··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
No, they're the same article. I had only read 404's when I submitted them and I assumed they'd both be submitted regardless.

driverdan··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
Every single time what? Please, be specific in what you mean.
driverdan··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Until they are held legally liable they will do the minimum necessary to keep the money flowing and avoid litigation.
driverdan··on I'm being cyberattacked by Tesla, Inc
Report it https://www.cisa.gov/reporting-cyber-incident

driverdan··on Android NAT-T keepalive offload bypasses VPN lockdown
Why wouldn't you set a PIN?
driverdan··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
As much as people who live in NYC like to believe they're a state they're not, they're a city. Most of the state of New York does not have good public transit.
driverdan··on WeatherNext 3: Our most advanced global weather AI model
There's already a WeatherNext 3 post on the homepage https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49552299 and it has been posted a bunch of times this week.
driverdan··on TiVo to charge money for skipping commercials in your own recordings
The SponsorBlock extension does a good job of skipping inline YT ads when watching on the site.
driverdan··on A/I shuts down
This isn't new, it changed after 9/11. The US government expanded the definition of terrorism to pretty much mean anything they want.
