drieddust··on Science of Fasting
What makes you think you have to leave for jungle to be an ascetic? You are an ascetic by all means if you have control over your senses. At least Hinduism defines it that way.
drieddust··on Science of Fasting
An old Indian saying goes like this. Healthy eating and regular fasting is a big part of ancient Indian system still followed.

Wordly people eats twice a day,

Ascetics eats once a day,

Children and invalids eats throughout the day.

drieddust··on Nearly the hottest place on Earth, India swelters under intense heat wave
Staying indoor in 24C air-conditioned spaces conditions the body so badly that even 28C starts to feel bad. I noticed this in my own behaviour and thought of changing it last month. For a change, I decided to drive without air conditioning. It felt bad for a few minutes, then it gets better and when I come back to a cooler place it feels like heaven.

Exposing yourself to the elements is greatly rewarding.

drieddust··on Nearly the hottest place on Earth, India swelters under intense heat wave
Thanks for the excellent resource. A big part of this problem is self inflicted.

We used to have thick mud walled houses which stayed cool during scorching heat. People who could afford would go with stone constructions. Things such as sun and wind direction were also considered while constructing the houses. All that knowledge is discarded in favour of high rising concrete jungles.

But all that is replaced with concrete based constructions with almost no insulations. This makes inside even more uncomfortable than outside once the wall have absorbed heat. Commercial construction is even worse with lots of glass.

It doesn't matter that you have 0 contacts. They will still be able to map you through other people's contact list.
drieddust··on How to Read “Gilgamesh” (2019)
> Even Krishna's role has a lot of valid criticism in terms of the little he does to avoid the war (being a god and all). The closest clean character seems to be Karna who is on the losing side.

My apologies but both statements doesn't stand if you read the original work of Ved Vyasa or a faithful translation of it. One single incident disproves both the statement. I am not a Mahabharata expert but this proves how false legends have spread around texts like Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Krishna went as diplomat to settle the dispute without war. As a final proposal, he offered to settle the dispute just for 5 villages. Duryodhana under influence of Karna said "I will not give land worth a needle's tip." and that was the end of all negotiations.

Edit: Please refer to my other comment for details about Karna's Character.

drieddust··on How to Read “Gilgamesh” (2019)
> Compare these two to Bheeshma and Karna, who spend their entire lives torn by conflicting loyalties.

Karna is a legend generated in recent times. In most editions of Mahabharata, he is willingly standing on the wrong side of justice willingly. He didn't even care for the well being of his supposedly friend Duryodhana. Here is a talk[0] and book[1] by Mahabharata researcher.

drieddust··on Twitter sees jump in govt demands to remove content of reporters, news outlets
Yes and Twitter, FB, YT etc. pushed us on it by firing the first shots. When they decided to impose censorship and de platform as per their whim, they should have understood the consequences.

Concept of vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam is misunderstood even by Indian. Of course in Indian philosophy world is considered one large family. However, this is directly in contrast with Clash of civilization. They cannot work together.

Indian sages were smart enough to also warn of its misuse. Here is a 3 part detailed explanations of the concept and how its meaning is lost. [0] [1] [2]

drieddust··on Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up
My advise as someone who has experienced this in many parts of the world including my own Country. Most people are subtle about it and I beilve it is their mental shortcut to gaining the upper hand in a negotiation. They are not doing it because they think they are truly superiors. So instead thinking world is unfair (racists, sexist etc.), I try to respond appropriately and in the moment.

Current crisis is a direct result of people attributing too much meaning to simple negotiation tactics.

> ... all because of their need to gag dissent.

I think you know that there are people blocking highways for months blocking entrance to Capital. If people don't have right to protest how this is hapenning.

> Disha's toolkit gets an arrest but toolkits by bjp activists openly calling for violence against muslims get a wink wink nod nod

BJP worker doesn't habe a toolkit. He runs a telegram group with open membership. You can join it too.

Disha Ravi had to retract and replace the toolkit with a sanitized version because toolkit is more about disrupting the "chai and yoga" image of India than protest against policies of the Government.

And ofcourse we can't forget Muslims. They are the proverbial victims with no extremism. Be it France, Sweden, UK, Banglore or Delhi. Across time and place, all the rioting is someone else's fault across time wink wink nod nod

drieddust··on Plant-based diet would reduce agricultural land use from 4 to 1B hectares
I was never a regular meat eater and have quit completely for over 3 years. I can do 110kg deadlifts. I am 42 with a sedentary job.
drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
This "environmental activist" is supporting an agitation demanding freedom to burn stubble and cause pollution choking 20 million people of Delhi[1].

Having said that India have some actual activists responsible for creating forests single handedly with their own money[2][3]. Incidentally present "fasist" government honoured them while previous liberal progressive government fail to notice them. These life long activists get no coverage while faker like Greta and Disha rules the headlines.

drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
I will be more than happy if decentralised web emerges. However, I am not ok with likes of Jack Dorosy calling the shots over Countries and elected Goverments.
drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
That's how I came to Modi's side. I didn't vote for him yet but now I will vote for him.

Unilateral uninformed criticism with no understanding of realities on the ground have converted me from a critic to an admirer.

Most of the West does not realise the appeasement, corruption, and tyranny of previous rule by a single family for over 70 years.

drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
An absurd argument. If a new situation emerges Government should not act because it was not in their manifesto?
drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Typical strawman argument with no logical reasoning.
drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Well censoring of Trump is best example. Another recent one is Facebook trying to ban and influence Unganda Elections.

In General these social media giants are extremely liberal towards Iran and China but they are eager to ban Trump and trample anyone not agreeing with idealogical standing of their staff.

drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Champions of free expression wants to grant more power to Jack and his cohort than to the democratically elected Government because Governments are corrupt but Jack is not. How Ironic?
drieddust··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Your argument will hold true if social media companies act as a platform and don't censor or intervene.

In reality they take sides and push their agenda so this is bound to happen. Companies coming together to de-platform Trump and Twitter CEO admitting that twitter employees are left leaning are very good examples of why this would happen.

drieddust··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
We weren't after unlock. We wanted to erase and reuse the device. AFAIK Apple genius can do that in-store if you show the proof of ownership.

There are online services which claim to do this if you can prove the ownership.

drieddust··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
That is actually a good suggestion. Getting locked out of your own device and then trying to prove ownership seems too much hassle.

I wonder how many device are rendered useless due to this "security feature".

drieddust··on Facebook confirms data-sharing agreements with Chinese firms, including Huawei (2018)
Exactly and I am sure all the people who logged into FB have not died off or moved into a jungle so they are still targets.
drieddust··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
Please don't misread. This is not about who can read the encrypted drive. It is more basic than that.

Apple locked us out of device we paid for. We just wanted to use it again completely wiping it off. Random Harry working for Apple can do that but we as legitimate owners can't.

So with respect to owning vs renting argument, How I am owning the device?

drieddust··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
> That's a security feature. If there was a recourse then locking the device ....

Oh come-on a thousands of Harrys working in Apple store can unlock.

drieddust··on iPhone 7 with dead NAND netbooting unmodified Ubuntu 20.04 via USB ethernet
Thanks a lot for the tip but my point still stands.

I was never into Apple and after this my wife decided to move away too so we don't care anymore.

drieddust··on China CCP to Nationalize Jack Ma's Alibaba and Ant Group – Report
Well at least west have cheap iphones and other necessities, isn't it?

Corporate geed is the reason CCP is so powerful today.

Every single corporation I have worked with is willing to comply with China,it's censorship laws, and it's atrocities on the work force.

drieddust··on Getting Started with Signal
You say this without any data or evidence. I am not an American so I have no skin in this game.
drieddust··on Getting Started with Signal
Just emotions that sacrosanct capitol was breached by fascist Trump's supporters.

That begs the question which platforms were used for organizing BLM riots for months and why there aren't any consequences?

Companies claiming to uphold democracy are the worst offenders if it makes business or idealogical sense yet HN crowd is cheering. Look at how they are willing to suck upto China, Iran, and even Taliban.

Disclaimer: Trump is a unreliable character so I don't like him personally a lot. But cheering up one-sided suppression without looking at the full picture is distasteful.
