dreyfan··on Multiplayer in Godot 4.0: Scene Replication (Part 1)
If you're in a competitive multiplayer game and you know that dropping an object on the ground or shooting a certain projectile will trigger new object spawns for a player who doesn't have them cached, you can do so rapidly and cause their machines to stutter/desync.
dreyfan··on GoDaddy Breach Widens
> anyone else, feeling a deep anger rising, when reading this in 2021?

Look at most of the stories on the front-page of HN these days. Often some shiny tool to allow front-end JS devs to write and deploy full-stack applications automatically upon commit. I guarantee you they’re making similar newbie mistakes. Instead of SFTP it’ll be a serverless endpoint that returns entire User records, unhashed password and all, without any sort of auth check.

dreyfan··on Our fundraising learning post-YC
They had 250+ meetings over ~3 months to raise only $1.5M? Wow. That's a lot of time that could have been spent building a product. Is this what YC money is supposed to be for? You get a few months of runway that you need to turn into a higher raise to have a longer runway on someone else's dime?

Are there any hacker/entrepreneur communities that focus on revenue-funded efforts instead of the self-perpetuating financing cycles?

dreyfan··on Remix – A framework focused on web fundamentals and modern UX
Watch the demo, they're not full circle yet. They're intermingling business and presentation logic all over the place. Their data models depend on createPost(), getPost(), and getPosts() style boilerplate methods. It'll be a couple years yet before the JS community reinvents MVC and ORMs (under a really slick name of course), then we'll be full circle.
dreyfan··on Unmasking the most viral page on Facebook
There are millions of fake social profiles on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc that use fake generated profile photos, friend networks among both themselves and gullible real users, and automated markov chain style comments on popular content. It's a self-perpetuating system and an effective way to see inside the walled gardens.
dreyfan··on Overview of new features in Apache HTTP Server 2.6
Phoenix Liveview is far more similar to a python or ruby app. You just have a websocket keeping things synced perfectly and maintaining state.

It’s awesome, yes, but it’s quite orthogonal to the nodejs/npm way of doing things. It’s far better.

dreyfan··on Overview of new features in Apache HTTP Server 2.6
The toolchains to build and deploy a completely static site today are about 10x more complex than a fully dynamic python/ruby/php site a decade or two ago.

I genuinely don’t understand it.

dreyfan··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
I don’t grasp the allure of Buy Now Pay Later. Isn’t that precisely what credit cards provide? Are they pushing more charges to the retailer and less interest charges to the consumer?
dreyfan··on App is getting 500 server error. Cant connect
If Tesla had just issued car ownership as an NFT this wouldn't have happened.
dreyfan··on Ask HN: I purchased a domain and now the registry wants to take it back
Yeah, then when someone loses or has stolen the keys to that wallet, the domain is forever gone.
dreyfan··on Crypto group loses bid to buy US Constitution copy
So, you’re telling me there’s a massive inequality in the system controlled by those with wealth and everyday people basically can’t participate because there’s no room for their petty needs.
dreyfan··on Notes on Web3
because api isn’t blockchain nft dao decentralized
dreyfan··on PHP is worth learning and using
Look at what I was replying to. The guy commented about the amount of OOP in PHP.
dreyfan··on PHP is worth learning and using
Sorry, I should have clarified "heavy" in terms of the level of OOP [1] insanity but yeah Symfony is very modular.

[1] e.g. "Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\Loader\Configurator\ContainerConfigurator"

dreyfan··on PHP is worth learning and using
> Just don't pick a language that is known to be on it's last legs.

I’ve heard that exact sentiment over and over since the RoR community aggressively started with their anti-php agenda in about 2006.

dreyfan··on PHP is worth learning and using
> Is the "your app gets initialized and torn down for every request" true for frameworks like Laravel and Symfony?

Yes, though heavy optimization in opcode caching and JIT keeps it fast and the primary process manager today (php-fpm) generally keeps a pool of PHP processes persistent. Each request is initialized from scratch but there's no disk nor interpreter hit after the first.

There are, of course, frameworks that simply handle HTTP requests directly (amphp, swoole) that operate as persistent application servers, so state is maintained.

> Does this model uses OS threads? Does it uses green threads?

No. PHP webserver backends are generally a long-lived forking model.

> I feel like the Go model is a way better model for server software than async

Swoole [1] offers a coroutine and channel model. It's incredibly fast and the techempower benchmarks [2] attest to the raw speed.

> It feels a bit weird to see how full of objects PHP is

Agreed. It's often way over the top with Java-esque OOP complexity. It does depend on the libraries in question but the popular ones are very heavy (Symfony). You can of course write very simple imperative code just fine too.

dreyfan··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
Obviously but you’re in the same pool of “commit and magically deployed globally” service offering, except I think you’re actually providing value (deploying backend services alongside static content) as opposed to a commit hook and a cache update.

What about end user experience?

dreyfan··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
Does it solve any problems which aren’t self-inflicted by the convoluted JS ecosystem and toolchain?
dreyfan··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
> Effortless, infinitely scalable, dynamic web apps.

That’s awfully reminiscent of the MongoDB meme.

dreyfan··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
Yeah I suppose? I think the “git push and it’s magically live” aspect is great. I just wish modern devs understood how the web actually functions so that understanding is transferable instead of thinking it’s all magic.
dreyfan··on Netlify raises $105M and acquires OneGraph
It’s bewildering to me how Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare and others have convinced the modern crop of developers this approach is fundamentally different than CDN caching and that “serverless” somehow doesn’t qualify as backend.
dreyfan··on About the Urgency of Building Web3
Cryptocurrency and related speculative technology does not define “web3” as much as that community would like to pretend it does.
dreyfan··on Databricks response to Snowflake's accusation of lacking integrity
Databricks is a shit platform that encourages terrible data practices and accretion of technical debt.
dreyfan··on Databricks response to Snowflake's accusation of lacking integrity
Databricks is a rapidly approaching IPO. Trying to justify their valuation with their overpriced in-memory hadoop.

> house deeds

(HN, June 5th 2028): "Ask HN: I was phished in Meta Horizons and they stole my house deed NFT. They've already moved in, my wife is furious. How can I get my house back?"

dreyfan··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
Curious what you mean by lack of proper threading in phpBB and vBulletin? Are you talking about threading of responses within a broader "Thread" (top-level post entry)

e.g. for a refresher some random vbulletin site: https://forums.devx.com/forumdisplay.php?105-VB-Classic

Because each of those entries on that page are a thread to me, but if discussions within a thread go off on a tangent there's not really a way to group/organize those sub-threads.

dreyfan··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
Yep, works great. Nobody uses it for anything new though.
dreyfan··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
I've yet to see a forum software that works as well as vBulletin and the clones of that did in the early to mid 2000s. Everything today is this weird "conversation" view and comments/threads constantly move around based on the whims of a voting audience.
dreyfan··on A terrible schema from a clueless programmer
B-Tree indexes perform just fine on datetime fields. Were you using hash or inverted indexes maybe?
