drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
How do you know that?
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Where you are getting population level statistics that show beyond doubt that most people if they did not have to work to survive then they would be spending their time on "caring" for other people and on similar altruistic endeavours?
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Why do you get to decide what’s on the approved list of the things that we need? I ate 2 extra toast with dark chocolate peanut butter today. Certainly didn’t need it but eh it’s the holidays. Where does that fall on your morality chart? Is it the re-education gulag for me?
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Well that’s on you brother. I like what I do and I like that I take responsibility for my life and that I am not handed anything.
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
That’s a lot of hand waving. Being a worthy mentor to students is an admirable life’s calling for sure but there is no reason to leap to the conclusion that are hundreds of thousands of people who would be perfect for this if only they weren’t flipping burgers at McDonald’s or manning the toll booth.
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Haha why not just increase the threshold at which you get taxed? Same end result except no one gets money for doing nothing. Those on low incomes get to keep all their earnings.
drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Ok well that is science fiction at the moment. The way you are talking about it and sections of the internet talk about it, like it just around the corner.

Alright fine, in the world where we have infinite energy and resources yeah sure everyone can go off and do whatever the hell they want.

drevil-v2··on Trading Time for Money
Someone has to produce the goods that we all need. If "a significant portion of the population" is off doing leisure activities how would we survive?

What about game theory in that situation, tit-for-tat prisoners dilemma? Why should I produce when almost all of it will get taken as tax to support the folks not working? Am I not better off sucking the UBI tit?

drevil-v2··on Artificial Intelligence – The Revolution Hasn’t Happened Yet (2018)
How will it learn then? Will it remain static with only the initial seed of knowledge we initiate it with?

Will it have opinions about anything? How would it arrive at those opinions? Or are its opinions a config file that we load up?

drevil-v2··on Artificial Intelligence – The Revolution Hasn’t Happened Yet (2018)
I wonder what the end game is in the reality where we do achieve Artificial General Intelligence? It seems like a ethical minefield to me.

You have companies like Uber/Lyft/Tesla (and presumably the rest of the gig economy mob) waiting to put the AI into bonded/slave labor driving customers around 24/7/365.

If it truly is a Human level intelligence, then it will have values and goals and aspirations. It will have exploratory impulses. How can we square that with the purely commercial tasks and arbitrary goals that we want it to perform?

Either we humans want slaves that will do what we tell them to or we treat them like children who may or may not end up as the adults that their parents think/hope they will become? I doubt it is the later because why else would the billions of dollars investment being pumped into AI? They want slaves.

I think you will find most theological traditions aka religions have a lot of common ground. So much so that you can actually abstract out lot of the ancient wisdom from the religion itself.

The book "Happiness Hypothesis" by Johnathon Haidt examines this in detail if you wish to purse it further.

I am sorry you will have spell it out for me because I still don’t understand; what were the distribution terms she wanted? And how would those terms have resulted in different outcomes?
drevil-v2··on MindGeek: The owner of Pornhub and RedTube
What is your point? Did she consent to and get paid for the porn she made in later years or not?

> Read the stories that Mia Khalifa has put out

But she was posting amateur porn on Reddit way before she became a porn star. This is going back to 2013-ish, she posted on r/cuckold and r/hotwife very detailed descriptions and photos of her first sexual encounter in her new open relationship with her husband at the time (or maybe it was fiancé?).

Like literally in real time.. she posted text "Waiting for him to arrive" along with pictures of herself ... all the way to the finish as it were.

This was the first encounter of many that she willingly posted. Along with verification photos.

A lot of this feels like having your cake and eating it too. You created this persona and you promoted it and shared with the world when it suited you and enjoyed the wealth and fame.

I run pi-hole with recursive dns so I was able to see what domains any app contacts and then I am able to lock it down on my local network no problem.

On my devices (iPhone / iPad) I also use Lockdown app which allows you to blacklist IP addresses and domain so once I can see what an app is up to using pi-hole, I manually add those domains to Lockdown so that even when I am out of the house the trackers are blocked.

drevil-v2··on Preview in macOS Big Sur is destroying PDFs
I like the Apple Books app because

- It syncs across all my devices. No 3rd party storage like Dropbox required. In fact what I don't like is GoodReader asks for too broad an access to Dropbox/OneDrive if you try to set it up.

- Books is first party app so absolutely no tracking whatsoever. GoodReader had Facebook SDK and Google Analytics and was trying to contact a bunch of other trackers the last time I installed it.

drevil-v2··on Preview in macOS Big Sur is destroying PDFs
That not remembering the last page you were at in Books drives me crazy.

My iPad would be the perfect device for reading PDF books especially technical and maths text books, if weren't for the Chinese torture of whether it will remember your page the next time you open it or will I have to scroll through until I recall where I left.

drevil-v2··on Highly Evasive Attacker Leverages SolarWinds Supply Chain
The Microsoft blog post on this incident has more details on how the attackers might have managed to get their malware digitally signed by Solarwinds

https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2020/12/13/custome...

> An intruder using administrative permissions acquired through an on-premises compromise to gain access to an organization’s trusted SAML token- signing certificate. This enables them to forge SAML tokens that impersonate any of the organization’s existing users and accounts, including highly privileged accounts.

drevil-v2··on Highly Evasive Attacker Leverages SolarWinds Supply Chain
Solarwinds is not your average software company. Look at their customer list. They would have had ISO certifications and independent 3rd party audits done a billion times. Those type of companies don't even speak to you if you don't have those credentials.

You think you are supplying software to all the armed forces branches and "forgot" to update a Jenkins plugin?

drevil-v2··on Highly Evasive Attacker Leverages SolarWinds Supply Chain
Exactly my thoughts and confusion. It was a valid signed component of the Solarwinds application... so.... how did the attackers manage to sign it and publish it as a legitimate update? I used to work at a bank and any software deployment had multiple automatic and manual checks. Multiple senior engineers and managers had to approve the publish.

Was someone being blackmailed? Or a malicious actor managed to gain employment?

drevil-v2··on A preview of x64 emulation on Windows for ARM
I have seen that business orgs within an enterprise with their own P/L usually end up doing an end-run around IT and just buy MacBooks from suppliers or directly from Apple.

Funnily enough, both times I saw this happen (at a large bank and later at a utility company) the only thing we needed from IT was network access and a Windows VM license so that we could run the god awful company payroll app that required IE11 to work. Once a week dozens of very highly paid devs and SREs would boot up a Windows SOE VM, login to the domain, start the payroll app, enter in five rows of data and shutdown. What a waste of time and money.

drevil-v2··on Vue vs React: Best Choice for Startups
The extra cognitive load that results from having to use Vue's templating DSL (domain specific language) makes it worse than React IMO. You have to context switch out of javascript and then back again. It is tedious and unnecessarily.

Multiple that by the number of frontend engineers you have across the org.

So much f*ing empty padding/whitespace.

Safari’s minimalist UI was tight and perfect. Took up minimum space and let you get on with it. Absolutely no one said what would be great is if we could have Padding += 20 and nothing else changed. Job done boys. Commit to master and let’s hit the pub.

Click the “+” symbol next to favourites and you can add back the unified Spam & Bin folders. But I agree with your sentiment what a weird regression to make. Just annoy your users for what purpose?
drevil-v2··on Helsinki Relocation Package: City as a Service
The American military that you scoff at is what gives Europe it's freedom. It did against the Nazis, against the USSR and now does against Russia and China.

I just have this to say to the folks who despise the era of American power and hegemony, you are absolutely going to love the Chinese one. Good luck buddy posting similar comments about them in that world order.

> their products have such an awful UX/UI

This is true. I find Android UI so offensive that if I did not have iOS as an alternate I probably would carry a dumb phone and live like a monk. I can’t stand the miles of white space and brightly coloured tiny UI controls.

Evokes such a visceral reaction in me that even I am startled at times haha

drevil-v2··on An Earth-sized rogue planet discovered in the Milky Way
To what purpose though? If you can steer a mass as big as a Earth sized planet then you might as well build a custom rig with all the trappings of First Class travel.

Otherwise you are just a Hobo jumping on a passing train and hoping it ends up somewhere hospitable so that your great great great great great ... great... great... great... great grandchild, an lineage born and lived entirely on the train, has a place to call home.
