drevil-v2··on Qualcomm works with Meta to enable on-device AI applications using Llama 2
Apple Maps, as it is today, is so much better than Google Maps. The UI is way more polished than Google Maps. The Google UI looks like it is designed by committee - it is so ugly and dense. I find it really offensive.

The Apple Maps has better directions for my city at least. The Google one re-directs me through side streets and weird turns into traffic crossing lanes at the last minute.

Sounds like a good enough reason to mandate quotas for everything everywhere. Anything else on your wish list?
drevil-v2··on Why Not Mars
> You could build an aircraft carrier and lift it into orbit

No you can’t. You still need to spend the same amount of energy per ton to escape earth’s gravity. An elevator does not magically violate laws of physics

Edit: As pointed out below I probably misunderstood the comment I was replying too. My bad

drevil-v2··on TikTok banned on government devices under spending bill passed by Congress
I would say the power Google welds is an order of magnitude more dangerous to Western society and values than CCP. Unelected billionaire oligarchs and executives with a clear and legal obligation to maximise profits and market power is just as big a national security threat.
drevil-v2··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
It makes sense if you decide that Elon is guilty of "wrongthink", at that point for this mob nuance and context out the window and they will burn anyone at the stack. Works the other way, if you are say the right things then your actions don't matter. Say the right incantations and get away with murder/robbery, no one cares.
drevil-v2··on Many companies aren’t prepared to replace underperforming CEOs
I have been in that position delivering that update. The kind of work you have to do as VP/Director does not translate well into the task oriented stand up updates that developers give. Often times I would be working across multiple projects/initiatives - some I am responsible stakeholder, some I am an informed stakeholder, some are with external teams or companies - and most of these projects are over long periods of time - as in it is not 2 point or 4 point story item that can be updated in 60 seconds over stand up.

I think you are wrong. The software is miles ahead of competition in polish. And the cars that coming from Giga Shanghai are just as good as any other manufacturer - just read reviews in New Zealand.
drevil-v2··on Riding transit takes almost twice as long as driving (2017)
Weather is too erratic to lock in a bike ride. The area is quite hilly; narrow roads and steep gradients - not really commuter bike friendly.
drevil-v2··on Riding transit takes almost twice as long as driving (2017)
Same for me. It is approximately 5.8kms from my apartment to work.

I have walked it before during a bus driver strike, took just over an hour at a leisurely pace - 11mins per km.

Normal days - it takes me around 6 to 8 minutes to walk to the bus stop. There is a waiting period for the bus to arrive since you want to get to the bus stop before the scheduled stop - sometimes the bus is early.

Then it takes nearly 30minutes to get to work - frequent stops along the way, 5 minutes waiting at the bus/rail interchange etc.

Finally 7 minute walk to the office from the bus stop.

Total of usually 50 minutes door to door via public transport and it costs $8 both ways.

If I took my car, it would take me 15 minutes and $17 parking fee.

drevil-v2··on Uber broke laws, duped police and built lobbying operation, leak reveals
This is such a stupid simplistic view - read the BBC article on this leak of Uber files. The corruption they (Uber) instituted was just as bad as this anecdote you are alleging.

How does replacing one set of elite corruption with another set of elite corruption get to " i am thankful to Uber Lyft and all the other incumbents for managing to get their foot in"?? You are thankful to them? What are you on about?

drevil-v2··on SOC2: The screenshots will continue until security improves
So combine that with “post-facto” code reviews on a weekly cadence; there is potentially 7 day window during which a bad faith employee could act unrestrained?

Certainly this is giving me pause on using your platform for anything other hobby projects

drevil-v2··on Klarna to raise fresh cash at slashed $6.5B valuation
No instead they will call you before the trip and ask you where you are going and then cancel the trip after hanging up.

If it is raining or the sun is out or the trains are busy or it is any of one a hundred random reasons - you will have surge pricing. Not just 10-15% extra but 100-150% extra. But don't worry keep standing around for a 30-40 minutes and checking the app eventually the price will come down...

drevil-v2··on Life is not short
Thank you sharing that. It was lovely to read especially the part where you thank yourself, bought a smile to my face :)

It's a great way to think about it.

drevil-v2··on Launch HN: Rootly (YC S21) – Manage Incidents in Slack
I will echo the other comments on no upfront pricing. Even though this could be potentially useful for my team, I won't "contact" you for pricing. I am sick of having to deal with salespeople who want to know a ton of info about your business so they can gouge every last cent out of you and then some.

I would gladly pay a little extra just to have clear pricing and sign up with a credit card. I have got an engineering org to run, don't have time to moonlight as a procurement officer.

drevil-v2··on Uber concedes deception, prepares for $26M ACCC spanking
That’s misleading. Australia has very strict and regularly enforced laws about “proceeds of crime” which acts as a deterrent against future crime.
drevil-v2··on My Stripe Tax Story
There is a massive chasm between Stripe's perceived (for a lack of a better term) awesomeness vs the actual reality.

I don't think I have ever had an actual good experience with Stripe

Here is a couple of examples

- The account manager assigned to us was absolutely horrible. Would not answer emails. Getting information out of him was like pulling water from stone. And our business is a global company with annual revenues in the hundreds of millions of dollars. He couldn't care less.

- Stripe support... I have an email thread with these guys that reads like a "who's on first base" script. I still read it sometimes for a laugh and make sure I wasn't dreaming the whole thing.

Boggles the mind that Stripe is worth many tens of billions of dollars. I want to invest in their marketing partners. Those guys are doing a fantastic job.

EDIT: If anyone senior from Stripe is reading this; reply back and I might be able to provide you more details. I really want someone at Stripe to read that support email thread and tell me what they honestly think.

drevil-v2··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
I am moving my domains off NameCheap too. This is ridiculous behaviour from a for-profit organisation; the only transaction I am interested in with Namecheap is I give you money and you act as the middle man in registering my domain.

Spare me the political and social grandstanding. I am not interested in your views on either topic.

drevil-v2··on The impact of sexual abuse on female development: a longitudinal study
Obviously rape would be at one end of the spectrum but what's the distribution of incidents over the entire spectrum?

They say in that report you linked in the OP that they include "behaviours such as unwelcome sexual comments, actions or advances" which are entirely subjective.

drevil-v2··on The impact of sexual abuse on female development: a longitudinal study
>> One in ten (11%) women students experienced a sexual assault in a postsecondary setting during the previous year. About one in five (19%) women who were sexually assaulted said that the assault took the form of a sexual activity to which they did not consent after they had agreed to another form of sexual activity—for example, agreeing to have protected sex and then learning it had been unprotected sex.

Is there a baseline for what constitutes sexual assault? Or is it entirely subjective?

> 5G will make it cheap enough for manufacturers to bundle always-on cellular modems in every device

How do you figure that? Is there something special about the 5G electronics and chipset manufacturing that make would make it much cheaper than 4G electronics? I don't think this is true.

> If you're in your mid-20s in most US metro areas (except in the South, perhaps) - this is what it's like

Says who? Have you stepped out during a weekend in a US metro city? To popular nightspots? No app needed to meet and socialise with attractive people - strangers or an extended social circle. In fact some might even say it is like shooting fish in a barrel

drevil-v2··on Tinder just permabanned me or the problem with big tech
My thoughts exactly. It’s like some of these people have never gone out on weekends or even had a chat with a woman randomly at the gym, supermarket, at cafe, out for a walk. What’s the problem? Just say hi and be normal. If she doesn’t seem interested, smile and move on!

drevil-v2··on What if performance advertising is just an analytics scam?
Way more than a dollar. If you really want to cost a company a pretty penny, click on the ad after searching for an "intent" to do something rather than the exact brand. Some of those Adwords cost many tens of dollars.
drevil-v2··on Google’s apps to embrace iOS on iOS
It is the copious amounts of whitespace that I find so very offensive in Material UI.

My secret guilty pleasure at work is shooting down any mention of using Material UI design in any of our software haha.. it is just silly how much pleasure I get from it :)
