drenvuk··on AI researcher Timnit Gebru resigns from Google
Where is the email with the conditions? It sounds like she gave a stupid ultimatum but until it's public it's hard to know.
drenvuk··on Ask HN: How do you stay awake when doing code review?
This might be stupid but print it out and read it while walking or maybe on an ipad or something?
drenvuk··on I spent eleven years working on this Line Rider track
It's beautiful.
drenvuk··on Ad block and you don't stop
Nah, we're winning now.
drenvuk··on Apple Announces App Store Small Business Program
excuse me for my lack of Italian but is there any way you can find something in English or possibly outline what is happening?
drenvuk··on Mailchimp outlines right to ban users for “inaccurate” content
Yes. Just based on definitions. Are you trying to prove him right?
drenvuk··on Mailchimp outlines right to ban users for “inaccurate” content
You're making the mistaken assumption that the people who need to think critically have all of the information or even the right information to do so. Most people are making judgements and coming to conclusions based on less than whole data. They don't have time to exhaustively investigate everything about every topic and make sure that all of their sources are flawless. You're asking for perfection. It's impossible.

This is not reasoning for censorship by the way, its reasoning for systemizing trustable sources of information. Someone will care enough to get it right and fair so we should promote them and ignore the others.

drenvuk··on The Fall of Silicon Valley
Your blog post sounds like your philosophy was to search for and find goods that you would enjoy using and give you peace of mind. His philosophy sounds more like "get what works, if it breaks replace it and try again." The longevity and quality of his items don't seem to matter so much as their ability to fulfill each stated purpose adequately. Your philosophy sounds consumeristic in the face of his more utilitarian sounding examples.

Taking the example of your flatware - why not just get some cheap stuff from Walmart? It will work well enough. The mouth sensation and feel in hand is secondary to the purpose of feeding yourself. I'd buy it because it looks nice but the cost of that vs a 20 piece set from Walmart? You can donate the excess to a soup kitchen.

My unasked for $0.02. I'd read your rebuttal. Please write it.

drenvuk··on How to Live with Dying
citation for the tribe please. i can't find anything.
drenvuk··on U.S. Supreme Court warns of limitations to Section 230 platform indemnity [pdf]
They don't and it will be clarified by the courts whenever any of their "clarifications" are up vs precedent.
drenvuk··on U.S. Supreme Court warns of limitations to Section 230 platform indemnity [pdf]
I am chill, it's just that it's not much reading and sounds like the guy didn't even make an attempt to skim through it and pick up a few things. It's lazy.
drenvuk··on U.S. Supreme Court warns of limitations to Section 230 platform indemnity [pdf]
it's only 10 pages, single column. you want someone else to filter what the judge is saying for you?
drenvuk··on SeaweedFS – A simple and highly scalable distributed file system with S3 API
Scylla wouldn't even be good for blob store if you're dealing with megabytes. If you're dealing with kB range Cassandra is stabler and pretty much what you want. For big (MB+) Seaweed is up there for the best option.
drenvuk··on Chrome is deploying HTTP/3 and IETF QUIC
Can someone provide the tradeoffs and benefits of QUIC vs WebSockets vs WebRTC? I know websockets are tcp and WebRTC requires some special tunneling logic but aside from that I don't particularly know how quic is better or different aside from using udp.
drenvuk··on Ask HN: What is your trick to do deep work or study?
This will probably be missed but unplug your internet and put your phone in another room. I have offline docs and stackoverflow questions for everything that I need to build and plenty of examples from other projects already on my machine.

All you need to do is remove distractions and temptations and make the thing you want to do but are easily pulled away from the most interesting thing to do within your immediate reach.

drenvuk··on Color blindness
I've been wondering if syntax highlighting has a different amount of usefulness for colorblind people and whether it would be worth it to have a "font highlighting" system for different things. I already use bold for curly braces and italics for square braces since I use a small font. I'd like to try it. But vim chokes if the fonts are different sizes and sublime only allows one font at a time.
drenvuk··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
$22 Billion to $77 Billion in annual revenue between when he became CEO to when he stopped in 2013. I think that's pretty decent. I think that it was growth in enterprise that they were successful with.
drenvuk··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
This is why I like Balmer and Tim Cook. Their fortunes are tied to the success of their companies rather than leeching off of it as it dies. I'd posit that any CEO who is not in a Ride or Die relationship with their company does not have correctly aligned incentives for their performance.
drenvuk··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Even though it's how it is currently that's not how it should be. Chrome is extinguishing the web browser right now. This is netscape territory done in a smarter manner than utilizing exclusivity deals with websites and software makers.
drenvuk··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Why was your comment flagged? @dang I honestly would request that you look into who is voting down reasonable comments in this thread. They do not deserve voting rights.
drenvuk··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Shit like this pisses me off. I care for Firefox and the team behind it but how do you get rid of these vampires sucking the company dry? You've got executive pay going up, usage going down. Pivotal leaders being ousted, good workers being released, good features being removed and shit features being added. It's like managers and executives somehow dig their bureaucratic teeth into a successful company/project and then suck it dry while proclaiming "It's ok, everything will be alright. Here, have some AVX-512 or some MEGA OMNIBAR." As if this shit actually matters.

Why is there no system for calling them out on this, swiftly kicking them out and staunching the bleeding?

drenvuk··on Why books don't work (2019)
What about instead of chapters you break books down into concepts. You can then test the reader on the concept by embedding the page number of the immediately following concept into a problem that can be solved through mastery of previously read concept. So smaller chapters with locked physical material. They probably already do it for digital material.
drenvuk··on What Is the Sound of Thought?
I assume the reason for this is that speech is encoded as an internal meaning and the visible text is also encoded as meaning. When the circuit for the internal meaning fires up then the rest of the circuits are sympathetically fired as well. It also makes me assume that's why PTSD is a thing - some trigger hits the specific circuit that causes the rest of the stress response. With PTSD the process is debilitating, but in the normal course of life the process makes retrieval of information and the expression of appropriate actions easier.

Neat. I'm not a scientist and I could be very wrong however.

drenvuk··on We need young programmers; We need old programmers
Yup. They're driven by dreams far more than responsibilities and that dreaded death timer. It makes me feel a bit old tbh.
drenvuk··on Apple: Person-to-person experiences do not have to use in-app purchase
Thanks.
drenvuk··on Apple: Person-to-person experiences do not have to use in-app purchase
Can you please explain?
drenvuk··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
If at first it doesn't work, force it.
drenvuk··on Apple Disabling 'Sign in with Apple' for Epic Games on September 11
They're implying that you're not a hacker because you appear to lack the hacker's mindset. Maybe you have it for some interests but not others but from the hackers that I've seen it's usually a driver for much of their technology interaction.
drenvuk··on Apple Disabling 'Sign in with Apple' for Epic Games on September 11
Are you even a developer? Do you have any technical background past HTML and js?
drenvuk··on Apple Disabling 'Sign in with Apple' for Epic Games on September 11
He's not playing gatekeeper. Hackers have generally been known to like open systems or to force closed ones open. Just look at history. You're talking about a phone ecosystem, he's talking about a closed ecosystem.
