dreaminvm··on Dropbox says it is cash flow positive, in no rush to IPO
It totally screws the early employees with options. You're stuck with losing that equity or paying for theoretical money. If the IPO goes south, you can only deduct $3k in capital losses per year, although the loss is rolled over to follow years.
dreaminvm··on Facebook Reports Q1 2016 Results and Announces Proposal for New Class of Stock
Pretty incredible revenue growth on just Facebook and Instagram. Makes you wonder how big Facebook can get when they begin to really monetize Messenger, WhatsApp, and VR.
dreaminvm··on Facebook is ruining Instagram
How do know this is not purely an Instagram decision? If Instagram usage data demonstrated that most users only looked at 30% of the timeline, then it makes sense to optimize for the most active/engaging content.
dreaminvm··on Here’s $100. Can you win $800M at Powerball?
Would not work unless it ballooned into 10 figures. Lump sum taxes would take most of the gains away and that assumes you are the only winner.
dreaminvm··on Google paid $380M to buy Bebop, Diane Greene donating her $148M share
Source? VMware was sold for $625M to EMC, so unless Diane and partner had a hidden company worth 20-30 billion, the math doesn't add up.
dreaminvm··on Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation
Forgot to note that I am fresh out of college.
dreaminvm··on Big Company vs. Startup Work and Compensation
Firstly, everyone not working in the Bay Area can ignore these figures because they are bloated due to cost of living (3K for 1BR/1BA apartment) and competition for talent (from startups and peers).

Secondly, people are ignoring the fact that RSUs at the 3 companies mentioned (and a few others AMZN/MSFT) have grown substantially in the past 5 years (about 125-150% on average) and is the biggest factor in these "surreal" figures.

Broken down into base (110k starting common at BigCorp), RSUs (initially 100-150K over 4 years) and bonus (10-20% base comp ), these numbers would make more sense. First year total comp is close to 145K-170K. By the time you are a senior engineer (mid-level) and assuming this took 5 years, your base comp is close to 135-160K, with refresher grants (and accounting for market performance) your RSUs probably hit 100K/year, bonuses at 30K bringing total comp to 265K-290K.

I happen to work for a BigCorp in SV (close to 1.5 years now) whose stock is performing poorly, hence my total comp is 160K (110K base, 25K bonus, 25K in RSUs/year). But if we had FB/AMZN/NFLX type of stock performance, then my comp would shoot up to 185K without any promotions.

dreaminvm··on China to begin two-child policy
Pretty much the same story here except I was the third child. I feel fortunate that my parents wanted to welcome another troublemaker into their life.

The scary part was learning later on that the policy pushed many Chinese families to discard their female offspring since boys could earn better.

dreaminvm··on NFL’s First Live-Streamed Game on Yahoo Attracted 15M Viewers
The stream quality was beyond my expectations, it was crisp and clear. This is a service I would happily pay for since DirectTV's Sunday Ticket streams are often lag/time out for me on other devices.
dreaminvm··on Amazon Beats Analyst Expectations with $25.4B in Sales
From what I know talking to AMZN engineers, they still vest over 4 years, but you do not get a big chunk of it until year 3.

Probably still worthwhile when the $200k initial grant turns out to be worth 2-3X more after 4 years.

edit: typo

dreaminvm··on Amazon Beats Analyst Expectations with $25.4B in Sales
Might actually be worth enduring the inhospitable work culture for returns of this magnitude on RSUs.
dreaminvm··on Google Launches a Developer Boot Camp, Promising Jobs for Graduates
I am self taught but I've interviewed a few bootcampers from SF bootcamps that knew nothing aside from boilerplate Ruby code.

If I were you I'd save the 5 figure fees and go through the python (learnpythonthehardway.org) and Django (learnpythonthehardway.org/book/next.html) tutorials.

dreaminvm··on Drivers still like VW
Can you expand on why a city where people rode bikes would be rid of traffic jams and accidents?

My guess is traffic will be just as bad in downtown areas with frequent lights and pedestrian crossings.

While bikes would certainly result in less fatal accidents, I think the frequency of accidents would be higher since bikes can ride so close to each other and pedestrians.

dreaminvm··on Uber Is Taking Millions of Manhattan Rides Away from Taxis
A tip is additional compensation for great service solely at the discretion of the passenger.

If cab drivers expect a tip regardless of service quality, then the tip might as well be added to the cab rate.

dreaminvm··on Mercury Spill
AFAIK most credit cards (Costco AMEX) will insure your car rental and luggage during travel. Out here in California and probably at most popular airports, the only things they look for are large dents.
dreaminvm··on Ask HN: Anything better than Tableau for data viz, dashboards?
D3.js or even Google Charts will get the job done for most visualizations.
dreaminvm··on Show HN: Cancel your Comcast in 5 minutes
Love the idea, although I wondering how user data will be protected across all of these different workflows?
dreaminvm··on Children of the Yuan Percent: Everyone Hates China's Rich Kids
By hard working Chinese people, are you talking about immigrant Chinese workers or Chinese people in China? You could easily make the argument that migrant workers are historically a hard working demographic, but I don't think the same could be argued for the world's most populous country.
dreaminvm··on I’ve Looked at Airbnb and It’s Way Worse Than You Think
I would much rather hear from tenants who have been affected by AirBnB evictions and what they are doing to deal with the housing crisis. Too many of these pieces are just blame games that alienate/ignore the people factor.
dreaminvm··on Why Airbnb is dead to me
Aside from using HT when they gave out free credits, their rates have been consistently more expensive than a comparable hotel on Priceline Express and Hotwire.
dreaminvm··on As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change
I disagree. What I got from the comments was that while everyone is capable of learning how to program, the expectation that a 3 month bootcamper can do/learn the same amount of information as a 4 year CS degree is insanity. Anyone who has studied STEM can tell you, 4 years is actually fast pace for a competitive program. What's next, a bootcamp to turn out doctors in 6 months instead of the 8/9 years of schooling?

And yes, most of these bootcampers (regardless of their location) are chasing a big paycheck because VC money is flooding the markets (many references in the article).

dreaminvm··on As Tech Booms, Workers Turn to Coding for Career Change
While the demand is real, I am just not sure it will last with the level of skills being pumped out of these bootcamps. I recently interviewed a few candidates from a coding bootcamp mentioned in the article and while they can write basic rails code, they all lacked problem solving skills. Most candidates were hung up on basic performance related questions.
dreaminvm··on Ask HN: Startup vs. big corp fresh out of college?
I agree with 1 and 3, but 2 seems exaggerated. Enterprise jobs vary a lot depending on the organization you fall into. There are lots of engineers at Big Corp that are innovating and pushing the envelope.
dreaminvm··on It's the Future
Don't forget banks and wall street.
dreaminvm··on Ask HN: Those who hired bootcamp graduates, would you hire them again?
I interviewed a bootcamp graduate recently that had similar claims but couldn't answer basic algorithm and design questions that high school students are being taught.
dreaminvm··on Ask HN: I'll be starting with a new job soon but their machines have Windows
Almost everything is the same using a VM, with the bonus of VM functionality like cloning and changing the hardware specs.
dreaminvm··on Google Sued by Job Candidate for Age Discrimination
If you read into the job summaries, it seems like he's been doing the same things for a long time without progressing to roles of greater responsibility. On a side note, hes also starting an Oracle certification class.
dreaminvm··on Show HN: Density – The Heartbeat of a City
Had the same idea a while back whenever I called a restaurant to check the wait time and it went to voice mail. App looks good, I will try it out this weekend.
dreaminvm··on Ask HN: How much you make, how long did it take for you to get there?
I am assuming we are talking about base pay here.

~110k software engineering, SV, <1 year out of school.

dreaminvm··on Silicon Valley: Perks for Some Workers, Struggles for Parents
Children are the future. Companies and society as a whole invest in the next generation because they will need more workers and support for an aging population. A company without paid maternity leave is directly discouraging employees from having children. I think (most) companies, especially in SV profit more than enough to offer their employees paid maternity leave (and probably time for you to work on your art).
