dreamer7··on The TikTok War
Yes. It's called Chingari. Since the ban, downloads have been shooting up. It's now 2M+ or so downloads while being no where near as polished as TikTok UI
dreamer7··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
> It is true that highly knowledgeable people know that Musk is an idiot conman

Sorry to nitpick but highly knowledgeable people will surely never claim Musk is an idiot anything. He is definitely a genius in several ways.

For something so technologically advanced as self-driving cars, his stuttering style seems to convey more sincerity to the general public than Steve Job's glib speech ever would

dreamer7··on Show HN: Ukpd – a Node.js module to provide access to UK Police Data
True. There are two sub-categories referencing crime involving a computer under 'Public Order'
dreamer7··on Show HN: Ukpd – a Node.js module to provide access to UK Police Data
I was not aware that the UK police department had open data access. This is great and I hope other countries follow this model too.

I checked the crime categories and there's no mention of cyber-crime. Is there any other data source that tracks this?

dreamer7··on Show HN: Coding Career Handbook
Amazon has a print-on-demand service. Should work well for you

dreamer7··on Missing Structure in Technical Discussions
I find the HN structure very effective in following discussions and it is really the same structure that the author creates, just spread vertically instead of horizontally.

Has anyone used this for their company internal discussions? I'm keen on giving it a try. I've even grabbed the last published HN source code to give this a try.

dreamer7··on What Is the Morning Writing Effect? (2011)
I'm curious to know why this process wouldn't work well for code?

Some of the best code I've written has also been in an exhausted/ not-fully-awake state

dreamer7··on We need to do the math, even on “small” projects
Not sure why this reply is being downvoted. Could have been phrased differently but it seems like street construction projects are low risk opportunities for corruption on a recurrent basis.
dreamer7··on OpenAI API
But the character length would matter less when you can move to the speech domain.

ls is 2 syllables list dir is also 2 syllables with more meaning.

Ultimately, with natural language, the effectiveness seems to be when it is coupled with speech-to-text

dreamer7··on IBM Cloud was down, as well as their status page
Maybe that's the new location :)
dreamer7··on An interview code submission that wasn’t even submitted changed our process
It depends on the objective of the coding test.

If you are expecting a candidate to have a certain skill-set, having a simple timed coding test as the first round is the easiest way to filter out a lot of unqualified candidates. Stripe does this quite well for example.

When I hire for my company, I do a live coding round with the candidate after an initial phone screen. Since I get far fewer applicants, this works out for me. The objective with the coding round is to understand more than their ability to write code in a particular language. It's a good way to learn how they communicate, how they approach a new problem, how they seek help, etc

dreamer7··on Google Is Not God of the Web
Page-load speed would be one metric among hundreds. But we can't assume that Google has lost sight of the ultimate metric - did the searcher find what he was looking for ?

For any competitive search engine, its internal preferences are expected to be a reflection of its users' preferences and not a whim as you seem to be implying

dreamer7··on Stop Taking Regular Notes; Use a Zettelkasten Instead
I disagree. The general idea that human mind stores information as a connected knowledge graph is still valid for technical subjects.

Sure, for simpler examples like if statements, you may not gain much. But, even for loops have differences across languages. JS uses for..of for iterating while Python and Swift use for..in

Also, there are different approaches in each language for getting the index and value while iterating.

Then, there are more complex topics like generics which have significant implementation differences between Java and Swift etc.

It would lead to a better understanding looking at these notes in connection rather than in isolation

dreamer7··on Ask HN: How important is website SEO for a mobile app-only marketplace?
Thank you for the points. They make a lot of sense. If you are interested in looking at the website, it's https://vendiapp.com
dreamer7··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
How about at the end of every month?

So, people who start working on something new at the beginning of the month are ready to talk about their projects

dreamer7··on How to sell a B2B product
Having experience in other domains would be great. But it is by no means the only way to build successful companies.

You only need to have passion for a particular domain to then engage with people who share your passion and also have more experience in that field.

dreamer7··on Google Pixel Buds
It is exactly like "Galaxy" in case of Samsung.
dreamer7··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
Thanks for this! It's quite enjoyable and I already found ways to improve experimentation at my current startup.
dreamer7··on Gauss’s “Remarkable Theorem” and the best way to hold a pizza slice (2014)
Agreed. I almost skipped the article due to the start. I'm glad I didn't. Now I'm seeing all the curved surfaces around me that were hiding in plain sight.
dreamer7··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is really a perspective expanding book. It just took a lot of persistence to get through as, at times, it was quite frustrating to read.

Perhaps I should read it again to get a deeper appreciation for it

dreamer7··on Ask HN: Great fiction books that have had a positive impact on your life?
Harry Potter!! The writing is simple but the wisdom is profound. Everytime I have reread one of the books in the series, I discovered something new.

One particular scene made such a strong impression on me about being calm in difficult situations. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Harry is flinging Dumbledore's precious instruments around, Dumbledore remains monk-like still.

dreamer7··on Bokehlicious Selfies
I don't have much experience with Photoshop. Would it be possible to record some sort of macro in it to automatically transform any image?

If not, this approach seems to have merit

dreamer7··on Social distancing slowing not only Covid-19, but other diseases too
[Off topic]

I recently picked up 1984 again and finally managed to complete it this time. I read the last line with a mixture of relief and a tinge of disappointment. Until the very end, I was hoping for a Hollywood-style turnaround in the political situation.

dreamer7··on This project posts one new startup idea every day for a year
Are you implying anything by "low-tech" or just an observation?
dreamer7··on Y Combinator may go fully remote for its next cohort

dreamer7··on Launch HN: Raycast (YC W20) – CLI-inspired desktop app for non-coding tasks
> does the YC20 in the title means that someone has funded this idea?

It just means they are part of the Winter 2020 batch (the most recent one).

You are right about the interface getting really complicated if every feature is to be implemented. But, assuming the 80/20 rule is in effect - Most of the time we would only be using a few features. As long as they identify those features and only implement them well, this tool will have great value.

Anyone who has to use Jira on a daily basis will definitely want to try this out!

dreamer7··on How to brainstorm great business ideas
Having worked on my startup for the past 2 years I can agree with this - > Building a business is messy

But luck is not the best way to succeed. Being systematic and knowing that any domain will have deficiencies that can be worked on will greatly increase the odds of success.

It is true that we will not hit upon a problem worth solving (in terms of scale, cost etc) on our first try. But the author's suggestion is to focus on iterating over the problem more than the solution, atleast initially.

dreamer7··on Show HN: LinkedIn for Chatbots
This is an interesting idea! Wouldn't the title make more sense if it was Chatbots for LinkedIn?

It is quite funny in its responses but not quite coherent. Tried questioning this bot - https://presbot.com/57-minkowsky/

Me: Are you an engineer?

Presbot: Ahh, I don't know. I'll bring this up in my meeting with Alexa in a couple hours.

dreamer7··on My Startup Failed, So We Open-Sourced the Tech
In India, we use similar e-commerce platforms to the West and are probably more advanced in the payment infra with the advent of UPI (Unified Payments Platform).

UPI is an interface that any bank or wallet app can use to allow individuals or businesses to send money to a mobile number or UPI Id.
