Became a hacker after learning to read, sold my first company when I was 10, and started a VC fund at 13. I program for breakfast, create disruptive companies for lunch, and eat PhDs for dinner. While asleep, I generate passive-income and dream of my next TED talk.

dreamdu5t··on Modern Media Is a DoS Attack on Free Will
Take responsibility for your choices and your votes. You are not helpless.

Blaming Trump’s election (which this article insuates by equating his victory with the failure of democracy) on social media is incredibly disingenuous. Americans are not the helpless fools the author says we are.

dreamdu5t··on We Can’t Trust Facebook to Regulate Itself
Facebook does not have the power to force people to sell to them. They do not have the power to force people to use Facebook. That's a fact. It's a free website, that people use of their own accord, at their own discretion. Just like someone that chooses to read NYT.

The call to regulate a free press (Facebook) is far more disturbing than any targeted advertising Facebook is engaged in.

dreamdu5t··on When Unpaid Student Loan Bills Mean You Can No Longer Work
So a viable solution to student debt is for the government to forgive it all?
dreamdu5t··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
People aren’t talking about money itself, they’re talking about hedge funds and prop shops and traders, which didn’t exist prior to the 70s and even Wall Street traders weren’t trading pure securities until the early 1900s (it was slaves and real shares before then) Economy worked just fine without the quants, and ever since trading has been a major segment of Wall Street they’ve completely crashed the markets three times and had to be bailed out by the fed (1929, 1973, and 2008). If you take the capital allocation justification at face value they suck at it. They’re losers underwritten by the government not winners smartly allocating capital.
dreamdu5t··on Coders who trade: Wall Street designs its staff for the future
Supermarkets were full of food and lights were on before hedge funds and prop shops existed. The first supermarkets weren’t even financed by wall street but a real estate tycoon with his own money.

Wall Street is a welfare program for traders, underwritten by the taxpayers and paying for the financial sector’s total losses in 1929, 1973 and 2008.

dreamdu5t··on Hollywood Hitmaker Plans to Fund Next Blockbuster with Crypto
It is fraud and a blatant lie for Christopher Woodrow to claim “Investors will benefit as the tokens, which can be traded in the secondary market, would appreciate based on the success of the films”

That is a straight up lie. Token value is not a share of the film’s revenue or profits.

dreamdu5t··on Security alerts on GitHub
You don't need to pay anyone for this service. GitHub and Snyk use free public vulnerability lists to check your dependencies.

There are plenty of open source alternatives such as https://github.com/RetireJS/retire.js for JavaScript.

It's absurd that companies are charging $100/mo just to run your dependency list against another public list of vulnerabilities. This service should be offered for free by GitHub.

dreamdu5t··on Uber confirms SoftBank has agreed to invest
Investors have lost the plot.

Uber is nothing more than a taxi company using VC capital to undercut competitors. There are no self driving cars. That’s just a story to get money and make the brand bigger than its product. Come back to reality.

There is no futuristic mars colony with Uber robots driving everyone around. It’s just a bunch of taxi drivers with dispatch replaced by an app.

dreamdu5t··on Jeff Bezos’ guide to life
What a bunch of self selected myths. Jeff Bezos isn’t a sociopath and he isn’t Superman, he’s a clueless fucking human being like the rest of us. He’s not special, he hasn’t “figured it all out” and he doesn’t have some secret others lack. His shit stinks and I bet he can’t even make an omelette.

Stop this cargo cult of CEO celebrity worship.

dreamdu5t··on RSS: there's nothing better
XML is not just a transport encoding like JSON. Apples to oranges. They are not comparable. It’s like comparing HTML or CSS with JSON. What’s he equivalent of XPath in JSON? There isn’t! They aren’t remotely solutions to the same thing.
dreamdu5t··on RSS: there's nothing better
XML is not a transport encoding like JSON. It is a hypermedia format that supports metadata. Even something as simple as an author attribute on a quote requires a standard on top of JSON.

“I can’t parse without programming” is a terrible reason to prefer JSON.

dreamdu5t··on Nineteen people a week overdose in Richmond, dozens are dying, hundreds revived
That is not cessation of drug use but a program to sustain drug addiction safely. Clearly that’s great at reducing harm from dirty needles, but not great at cessation of addiction.

I’m suspect of your claim that the majority of addicts seek treatment, since I’ve not seen any data on seeking cessation. Maybe you know of some other data showing that most addicts seek treatment that includes cessation. However, according to surveys by CDC and national survey on drug use and health 23 million Americans have a substance addiction and 3 million seek treatment. Approx 1 in 6 adults has some form of substance abuse problem. There is nowhere near that number seeking treatment.

dreamdu5t··on Impact of the Amazon-Whole Foods Deal on Instacart
This clause is not legal or enforceable. You can sue anyone you agreed not to, contrary to corporate legal attempts to intimidate.
dreamdu5t··on Nineteen people a week overdose in Richmond, dozens are dying, hundreds revived
And if a drug addict doesn't want treatment? The elephant in the room is forced intervention requires a form of imprisonment.
dreamdu5t··on The Evolving Economics of Bitcoin, Gold and Fiat Currencies
What’s clear from all these comments is that economic theory is bankrupt and impotent at explaining or predicting anything. It’s quite odd constantly hearing why bitcoin can’t work or whether it can be labeled a currency according to academic theory X, yet reality doesn’t care.

Bitcoin is amazing simply for showing us that monetary economists have no clothes. They’re astrologists that use math.

dreamdu5t··on Permissionless innovation
"Learn Liberty" is an ideologically driven organization whose goal is to promote pro-corporate policies by masking them in radical free market libertarian rhetoric.

It's propaganda.

dreamdu5t··on Biggest drop in Facebook organic reach we have seen
Rats in a cage.
dreamdu5t··on After the end of the startup era
If the smartphone boom was “2007-2016” it’s premature to claim nothing is next. It’s too soon to say “there is no such revolution en route”, when we had one practically yesterday!
dreamdu5t··on Ask HN: Why Isn't the Construction of CRUD Web UIs 90% Automated?
Because management is ignorant of technical costs. At the end of the day, the person who cuts checks says “I want rounded corners with drop shadows, and I want them pink and sparkly.” For example, we already have standard input controls but it’s de facto industry practice to implement custom ones to please those that have no understanding of these invisible costs.
dreamdu5t··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
Because like smoking it’s obviously unnatural to eat like crap and sit on the computer/couch/car all day. If not obvious then not surprising. Obesity is the epitome and result ohf an unhealthy lifestyle of no exercise and eating junk food.
dreamdu5t··on Security.txt
As an operator of many websites... I don't want more emails from "Security Researchers" who want $100 to tell me the obvious such as, "Login form should be rate-limited" or "emails can be enumerated using password reset form" and the like...

Instead, we should have a central vulnerability repository that is open-source, standardized, public, and transparent. This repository should vet vulnerability reports before contacting the software owner prior to disclosure.

dreamdu5t··on Productive on six hours of sleep? You’re deluding yourself, expert says
Not a single study or piece of research referenced by the article. "Some professor with a book says..." is not very convincing.

This is not a news article, and is not journalism. This is an advertisement for a book.

dreamdu5t··on How Venezuela went from a rich democracy to a collapsing dictatorship
Processing inputs is not the whole of economic calculation. Me and you may value things differently – that's the problem. In other words, utility is unobservable a priori, as are my economic preferences.
dreamdu5t··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
I think it's simple: fat unhealthy men have lower sperm counts and America has way more fat unhealthy men over the last 40 years. Doesn't look like the meta analysis dealt with this.
dreamdu5t··on Ask HN: What are some good tools for keeping a software project on track?
Lines of communication and chain of command are more important than tools. The only person who should need to know what you're doing is who you report to. And so on all the way to the top.

Trello, jira, aha, whatever won't help if you don't have clear lines of communication and a chain of command

dreamdu5t··on Cryptoeconomics: Paving the Future of Blockchain Technology
Terrible article. So many suckers in this mania. 99% of people writing about, trading with, and investing in cryptocurrencies don't know how blockchain or bitcoin even works. It's worse than 1999. The hype and ignorance is astounding.
dreamdu5t··on China mall introduces 'husband storage' pods for shopping wives
American malls would need a bigger box. Probably three times that size at least.
dreamdu5t··on Unikernels are secure
Without a formal proof there is no measure of correctness at all.
dreamdu5t··on Unikernels are secure
Hard to take claims of security seriously for untyped languages which are not provably correct and lack a denotational semantics. Let's start by provably not compiling buffer overflows and memory overreads considering those are the vast majority of RCE and privilege escalation.
dreamdu5t··on Children of the Opioid Epidemic Are Flooding Foster Homes
It's a myth that heroin and opiate addiction are the result of pain killer prescriptions: "According to the large, annually repeated and representative National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 75 percent of all opioid misuse starts with people using medication that wasn’t prescribed for them—obtained from a friend, family member or dealer. "
