dreadsword··on America.gov
I've tried it - I've been playing around with a vibe coded application that crawls municipal websites, indexes and embeds, and then does rag retrieval. It came from the need to dig up specific information that's scattered across PDFs, multiple web pages, etc. - exactly as you described. AI does a decent job (w/ RAG) of synthesizing.

https://opencity.services/chat/winnipeg

how do i report a noise complaint?

It depends on the type of noise:

- Loud party or people-related noise: call the Winnipeg Police Service non-emergency line at 204-986-6222.

- Animals making unreasonably loud, unnecessary or excessive noises: report it through 3-1-1.

- Mechanical equipment noise like furnaces or air conditioners, or noise from construction tools used by a company or resident: contact Community By-law Enforcement Services at 3-1-1.

- Planned event noise: you may need a Noise Permit at no cost, but it is not for construction work and should be submitted at least four weeks before the event.

The City also says noise-generating activities within 150 metres of a residential property are generally prohibited before 7 a.m. and after 9 p.m. on weekdays, and before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.

------

YMMV. A big part of the backend is categorizing hits and misses, with an eye to helping municipalities clean up conflicting information, fill obvious gaps, etc.

dreadsword··on Moderate wine drinkers had a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular death
Cheers!
dreadsword··on Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s
Does running a proprietary system rule out competition and restrict you to recreation? I have no idea what the FIFA-equivalents is for bowling, but I imagine there is one, and I imagine that it has a list of rules for lanes to qualify as competition venues, including scoring systems from approved vendors, etc.

Not sure if any of that's relevant to you!

dreadsword··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
Yeah I'm curious re: theorchid and who they are...
dreadsword··on I manage teams without a single call
Some kind of work can live in this "put it in a well structured & considered ticket" mode, some cannot. If this is your style and you've found a place where it works, fantastic, but I don't believe this to be generalizable.
dreadsword··on Tech Layoff Tracker
Reverse chrono, any news cluster that's tagged "layoff" - layoff announcements, discussion, etc. Make of this what you will!!

Hardcore!
dreadsword··on Show HN: I made an email app inspired by Arc browser
Yeah I'm with you, that was the first thing I clicked, and... nothing.
dreadsword··on Lamborghini cancels their multi-year EV project
I share your opinons! And, I have an EV - its a wonderfully utilitarian, fantastically reliable, incredibly cheap transportation device. But its a passion-inducing as driving a golf cart - all utility, no drama, no experience.

I don't think Lamborghini etc will close up - I think they'll just get more and more expensive as ICE engines get penalized in more markets.

dreadsword··on Lamborghini cancels their multi-year EV project
If there's a place for ICE in the future, I have to say its in limited production, bespoke passion vehicles.

I see ALEXANDR WANG credited...
dreadsword··on Ask HN: Who is building these apps?
Dependencies & framework overhead. Back to Vanilla!
dreadsword··on More Terrible Slack Setups
I would love some real feedback on "effective" slack setups. I'm perpetually drowning in it.
dreadsword··on Centuries, not quarters. Wealth management for clients in suspended animation
For those entering medical hibernation or voluntary suspended animation, traditional market cycles are irrelevant noise. Our "Long Horizon" thesis ignores the turbulence of decades to capture the compounding inevitability of civilizations. We build structures that don't just survive time—they feed on it.
dreadsword··on Ask HN: What's your opinion on the Swisscows search engine?
To be fully honest, I hadn't heard of Qwant, Kagi, or Swisscows before reading your post, so thank you for drawing my attention to the alt-search world.

As far as I've known up to this point, its Google, Bing, DDG, and the LLMs.

dreadsword··on America Isn't Ready for What AI Will Do to Jobs
Current AI is the tip of the spear, but the fundamental nature of our economy will blunt that tip, and adoption will be slower than most anticipate. Purchasing cycles. Compliance. Board approvals, budgets, legal sign off, regulation, test phases, etc etc. Were still a long way from Accelerando.

Consider: There are still things that can't be self-serviced on the INTERNET - anything with moderate complexity or risk.

dreadsword··on Show HN: I made paperboat.website, a platform for friends and creativity
I haven't gone through and created a paperboat site (as I'm kind of drowning in channels at the moment), but I love the aesthetic and the spirit of a stripped down social space. Congratulations on the launch and best of luck!
dreadsword··on Workday CEO falls victim to Saaspocalypse
" Carl Eschenbach has stepped down as Workday CEO and been replaced by co-founder and executive Aneel Bhusri following a round of job cuts and share price volatility."
dreadsword··on Luce: First Electric Ferrari
CT200h is the nearly perfect hybrid, IMHO, interior included. Thumbs up emoji!
dreadsword··on [dead]
"OnePlus has strongly denied a recent report suggesting that the company is being “dismantled” and winding down its business, reaffirming that its operations are continuing normally. The clarification comes after an Android Headlines investigation claimed that OnePlus was effectively collapsing and being absorbed into its parent company Oppo, a narrative that triggered widespread speculation across tech circles and social platforms."

dreadsword··on Google Gemini Introduces Personal Intelligence
Memory and associated utility are going to be a major theme in 2026... and Google's out in front.
dreadsword··on My Fitbit Buzzed and I Understood Enshittification
TLDR: Product management goal mis-alignment can create annoying ux.

Counterpoint: People often forget to start their trackers. A "looks like your exercising" notification might be legitimately valuable for more people than the population for which it is annoying.

dreadsword··on April 9, 1940 a Dish Best Served Cold (2021)
I love the thought that perhaps the battle of the atlantic was influenced by the "nuclear bomb of laxatives" haha
dreadsword··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
This feels like a pretty low effort post that plays heavily to superficial reader's cognitive biases.

I work commercializing AI in some very specific use cases where it extremely valuable. Where people are being lead astray is layering generalizations: general use cases (copilots) deployed across general populations and generally not doing very well. But that's PMF stuff, not a failure of the underlying tech.

dreadsword··on Veo Goes Vertical
"The company has announced an update for Veo 3.1 that adds new capabilities when you provide the model with reference material, known as Ingredients to Video. The results should be more consistent, and output supports vertical video and higher-resolution upscaling."
dreadsword··on Ask HN: Iran's 120h internet shutdown, phones back. How to stay resilient?
For dense areas, mesh applications like BitChat (Jack Dorsey) could bypass the need for a network with p2p bluetooth mesh networks. And works with existing devices, vs something like meshtastic which needs an installed base (afaik).
