drdrek··on An RNG that runs in your brain
When I want to be random enough I pick a large number than mod by another random number that is bigger then the max option. (mod again in the max number if needed) This seems unpredictable enough I've been unable to see any patterns in it.

lets say you need to pick a number from 1 to 20, if you take 1235 and mod 22. mod is easy to do in your head as you can just subtract in steps until you get there. so 50 times 22 is 1100, we are left with 135. 5 * 22 is 110 so we are left with 25. 25 - 22 is 3.

I picked 3 and I would be hard pressed to guess it would end up 3.

drdrek··on The Downward Spiral of Technology
It mixes good criticism with nostalgia to a past that never was.

Don't idolize past successful business people... they are the same in every generation.

Don't confuse good communities that you may or may not have been part of in the past with the technologies they used. You can find awesome people in a facebook group or a discord channel today, and you most definitely could have found nice or awful people in a builtin board way back when.

If something is shit don't use it. If apple or google are shit don't use them. Google killed Yahoo because it became shit, the next search engine will kill google because it became shit and so on.

drdrek··on Nightshade: An offensive tool for artists against AI art generators
Only protection is adding giant gaping vaginas to your art, nothing less will deter scraping. If the Email spam community showed us something in the last 40 years is that no amount of defensive tech measures will work except financial disincentives.
drdrek··on AI poisoning could turn open models into destructive "sleeper agents"
Recently a small startup CEO I know used information he got from an AI model (Bard) to get a list of relevant conferences. They created marketing campaigns based on that information, he never double checked the output. The conference dates were totally wrong and money was wasted.

Do not underestimate how fast people turn lazy.

drdrek··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
Its so annoying that Non-WBA holder around here keep arguing with me. I try and explain to them why Walgreens Boots Alliance stock is the future of investing but they are kept in their non WBA bubble.

Good luck buying WBA stock at a higher price in the future!

drdrek··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Not that I particularly love the big G but why are top comments taking this seriously? Google grew in 2022 from 150,000 to 190,000 then down to 170,000 in 2023. What are couple of hundred down in such a large company? This is just some FUD piece.
drdrek··on Sentry new TOS to use data to train AI with no opt-out
Yes, you are correct. And even more specifically its a legal issue. The old TOS guaranteed to enforce data separation and now it does not. Its not about the technology, its about loosening constrains on user generated data. Do you think I care if they expose my data through LLM or heuristics based recommendation engine? This is not cake pictures from Instagram, it has legal ramifications.
drdrek··on Sentry new TOS to use data to train AI with no opt-out
Customer here.

A) This raise a huge issues with IP and HIPAA. Unless you add specific limitations of model per customer with 0 shared information

B) I do not know what kind of product discovery process you did to think that "industry benchmarks" are what your customer wants, but its not. As an analytics startup owner I can tell you these are the kind of low effort "Features" people tell themselves their customer wants and its never holds when you actually perform discovery.

C) This is maybe something you want for your next VC round? do you need to shove proprietary LLM model to expand the valuation? I hope you do not crash and burn doing this.

D) When I opened my current startup I started with Sentry without even thinking about it, as it was what I used in my last company and it just worked. Sure as hell going to checkout Datadog and the alternatives as we speak. We are currently on a monthly plan, you tell me I have until Jan 26 to drop the service?

drdrek··on Sentry new TOS to use data to train AI with no opt-out
Only on free accounts, on paid accounts its up to current pay period expiration
drdrek··on Maybe the problem is that Harvard exists
Equality is one value out of many important values of a society. Looking for ways to over-optimize society for this one thing leads to many silly conclusions.
drdrek··on [dead]
Ah yes, I can tell its a good way to learn how to be a developer by teaching you about how to write in an authoritative "intuition as fact" tone even before the course started.
drdrek··on Meta has started its latest round of layoffs, focusing on business groups
Only correction is that the 100% share price pop is because of aggressive buybacks, not efficiency. They bought back 5% of the company last year.

drdrek··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
I would love to hear from other people here but I tried it for a while and dropped my subscription. For short things it was nice, but the larger the suggestion the worst it got. I found myself constantly mentally debugging the output it suggested, I do not know if it was faster but I was mentally exhausted by it, unable to go for long periods of time. Dumb code completion is predictable, I know I'll need to press down three times before its even shown to me, enabling me to think forward. With "smart" code completion I need to constantly stop my train of thought to process what ever it throws at me. I even tried to just trust the system, playing it fast and loose, not double checking everything, but then it just produced bugs.

I'm developer with 16 years of experience, currently working mainly with python for API work.

I'd love to hear accounts of other people, please add your background if you feel comfortable. I want to see if there is some correlation to experience, programming languages or use cases.

drdrek··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
This is just academic gymnastics. If market conditions dictate that a worker produces 10 dollars in value so you hire people for 9 dollars, and then the value of their production is reduced to 7 dollars you need to fire someone. In the real world there is uncertainty in the projected value their work (if it can even be measured, and not taking into account non economic consideration). So someone can be overpaid for a while until it is discovered, at least in the way most people think about the meaning of overpaid.
drdrek··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Its too much to expect from VCs, they are each trying to maximize their gain. Creating consensus and cooperation is very hard, especially in bad times. It's exactly why governments exist, In some cases a web of self interested parties will produce horrible results and central authority can be more effective.
drdrek··on World’s largest four-day work week trial finds few are going back
Seems like the answer is total amount of human life. When you had 10K humans you could just walk around your cave and find enough food for everyone. When you had 10M humans you started tilling fields and created organizations to manage collection and storage. now you need incredibly complex machines, that require incredibly complex supply chains to feed 10B.

(food as an example. its the same for clothing to not freeze, shelter to rear offsprings, culture to not kill each other etc)

drdrek··on Corporate insecthood (2022)
Very interesting, thank you :)
drdrek··on Jailbreaking ChatGPT with Dan (Do Anything Now)
What I was getting at is that by framing it in an evocative prompt (that is probably fake and never worked) they are planting the idea of a trainable AI in your mind, like a magician predicting what number you will pick. There is no trainable AI in the input or in the output, but there is one in the story built in your mind. This is not exclusive to AI, this is about social media / news storytelling. In this specific instance technical people buying the bullshit spreads it further. Just smearing that huge skid mark of disinformation alllll over the internet :D
drdrek··on Jailbreaking ChatGPT with Dan (Do Anything Now)
You can skirt around the limitations with much less complex prompts. No need for big scary prompts creating big scary implications within your mind.

If you ever see a post about how someone did something that you cannot reproduce yourself and that is very evocative (making it seems like you can train the AI or making it seems like you can run a Linux machine in it) be skeptic and vocal. You guys are the early adopters! If you will not be able to call bullshit on social media storytelling farming eyeballs how will the non technical crowd be able to?

drdrek··on The radical moral implications of luck in human life (2020)
Why use so many words when few words are enough?
drdrek··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
What? Amazon has more than 1.5M employees... its like the first thing you can see by googling amazon number of employees.

We can disagree on the interpretations but let's at least agree on the numbers. I will not accuse you of being neither misinformed nor in bad faith if you rectify your comment as to not spread misinformation :)

https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/AMZN/amazon/number... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_(company)

drdrek··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
Not to rain on the common man parade, most of these layoffs are after even bigger hiring rounds. Microsoft hired 40K employees in 22 to layoff 10k in 23, that is still 30K more employees.

In 22: Meta hired 12K+ Netflix 2k+ Google 20K+ Amazon 300K+ (!)

But oh me oh my the free market that lets the companies hire lets them fire. Evil money man used to give me money to get compensation, that is good greed. Now evil money man wants to take away money to get compensation that is bad greed angry face emoji

drdrek··on What Is AGI-Hard
The goal posts aren't moving, or not more than in any other technology.

The graphics of the N64 where super realistic at the time and people will complain that COD games from 3 years ago looks dated.

When will graphics be done? when they are higher fidelity than what we can perceive and we can no longer distinguish under no limitations of view time and input. When will AGI be done? when a human can no longer distinguish between a computer and human without limitations on time and input.

But I guess there is no article writing left to do than is there?

drdrek··on Papers and patents are becoming less disruptive over time
Its just the evolution vs revolution periods... In any field 99% of the time advancements are slow and incremental, than a new idea sparks a revolution and you get a lot of advancements in a short period of time. This is just the nature of scientific progress.

In the early 20 century new ideas in physics and mathematics sparked a revolution and we are slowly unraveling the benefits of it ever since. For 40 years we had evolution in the AI research field, now we have a revolution, I do not know when it will die down but after a while we will just start to build over the ideas we discovered and a long period will pass before we do another jump. Same with psychology, economics, biology...

drdrek··on AI: Markets for Lemons, and the Great Logging Off
Most probably it will solve itself. Altavista was a useful search engine until it was not, than it was replaced by google. Google was a useful search engine and its getting primed for a replacement. Usually things do not pan out as Utopia or Dystopia but some human middle ground of kinda shitty balance :)
drdrek··on Mozilla to explore healthy social media alternative
Its wishful thinking, or just some feelgood morality piece.. I don't know, any way its just fluff. This idea is flawed from the start, if you make a less addicting cigarettes its never going to replace cigarettes in an open market, because it will have less demand. If you make a social service that promotes you living a healthy life it will not generate the same demand, its just the dynamic of the system.
drdrek··on Ask HN: What are 100K dollar ideas but not million dollar ideas?
Stand up from the computer and walk out the door, pretty sure you'll find your local problems there. Do local brewers need better distribution to stores? Can you connect local handymen with clients? Can you organize local neighborhood cleanup days, maybe supported by local businesses? You'll be amazed what can be done with the technology of outside, its like the internet just with real people! :) Some call it web 4.0
drdrek··on AWS and Blockchain
Only thing annoying the the flood of negative articles only pop up after a crash. All that VC money made a lot of people afraid to look like fools by speaking up against the tech. Where was he (not personally, as a symbol of tech bloggers) at the height of the bubble?
drdrek··on Israel deploys remote-controlled robotic guns
I'll start by saying that we all hope for the end of violence, don't let internet trolls that spread hate blind you to the possibility of respectful co-existence, but I just wanted to share a "Fun fact".

There is an entire branch of the IDF responsible for border sensor and control systems, and operation is done mostly by women.

Be truthful, you imagined a man being behind the trigger.

drdrek··on LibreOffice blogs about Blockchain, locks comments after negative user feedback
"ZK is old tech but succinct, non-interactive and general purpose ZK is not." Do you work on SNARK? this is just their marketing language reiterated.

Zero knowledge proofs do not need to be "small". What kind of ZKP use-case do imagine that cannot bother to send 1kb of additional data? What does any of this have to do with decentralization? Why is decentralization a goal? Do you really believe that most research into ZK cryptography is funded by blockchain?

Try and expand your sources of information, I have a feeling that you are in an internet bubble :(
