drakeandrews··on Biolite: Wood-burning backpacking stove also provides USB power
You ideally need both. A good GPS to tell you where you are, and a good map (and the sense and skill to read it) to tell you how to get somewhere else.

My father once said a GPS is just a device to remind you how lost you are.

drakeandrews··on Torus-Earth
There were either walls on either side of the trench, or the planet was a barren rock to begin with.
drakeandrews··on Air Force's mysterious X-37B space plane passes 400 days in orbit
Correction: FOBS put warheads in low earth polar orbit.
drakeandrews··on Show HN: An API for gender classification
At least in the UK, Jack is a fairly common shortening of Jacqueline. The only way of determining a users gender is asking them directly, and if a person wishes to enter different values into different systems, all the more power to them.
drakeandrews··on Our Culture of Exclusion (or, why I'm not going to *conf)
Unless you're really, really bad at drinking, having a beer is not physically forcing others around you to drink. If you start smoking, then everyone else around you has to deal with the smoke. I'm told that using vaporisers removes the smoke aspect, but now you've got a cloud of THC laden steam which, whilst not as bad as a cloud of THC laden smoke, is still a pretty selfish thing to inflict on other people.

That example would surely be better as:

    something = myfunc(d['x']) if 'x' in d else None
drakeandrews··on Facebook can now read your texts
The facebook app has its own camera app, if memory serves, that has some facebook specific features.
drakeandrews··on Bitcoin 2014 – Top predictions
Pretty sure if all the miners stopped mining, bitcoin would be dead in the water, unless there is a secondary transaction mechanism that doesn't rely on miners.
drakeandrews··on What I Didn't Say
HN hides the reply button on some comments that it deems might start flame wars (or similar). If you click the link link, that will let you reply from there.
drakeandrews··on David Simon: 'There are now two Americas. My country is a horror show'
How about when someone doesn't support treating animals well. Or values your apple more than your life? Or decides they have this million tonnes of toxic gunk and decides that instead of paying someone who knows how to deal with it he's just going to dump it all in your lake? Or when someone realises that you value organic produce more, and decides to lie and say that their produce is in fact organic?

What happens when someone realises your house is on top of a nice mineral deposit but can't give you sufficient value to vacate your property and decides to burn it down in the middle of the night?

What happens when one person pays another to kill you? It's a free and voluntary exchange. And you're dead. Everyone is better off, right? Right?

drakeandrews··on A CNN Viewer Has Questions for Mike Rowe
#2: I happen to believe that people should be entitled to education, healthcare, safety and respect.

#3: There are certainly bad jobs. Jobs where the employer does not pay, abuses their workforce etc.

#5: Debt you cannot afford? Sure. But sometimes debt is useful. A mortgage or a business loan for example.

#6: Safety is everyone's responsibility. It's all well and good that you behave well but if Bill decides he doesn't need to follow safety precautions it can just as easily injure, maim or kill others as well as himself.

#7: Don't I regularly see "Work smarter, not harder" plastered over HN? If the only way you can stand out is by working more, you're either at the top of your game or you can do whatever you are doing better.

#8: "The machines here are not maintained correctly, but I guess complaining is bad so I'll either put up with it or leave."

#10 (ish): Car accident breaks both your legs, you can no longer perform manual labour. Tornado destroys your business, insurance shrugs and pays you a pittance. Someone else's bad decisions cause an equipment failure that costs you an arm.

#11: These two sentences are not equivalent. I'm okay saying I agree with the latter, but not the former. I'm not okay with the fact the world is not fair and feel it's a noble cause to try and correct this.

#12: This just reeks of the blame the poor mindset I see in a lot of US conservatives (and in our own UK conservatives to be fair).

drakeandrews··on Europe's Ryanair vs. America's Southwest
Perhaps not if you buy your tickets last minute, but if you book 2-3 weeks in advance and pay more than ~£20 you're being robbed.
drakeandrews··on The Power of a Pronoun
In a lot of cases (at least in the UK), it could fall under gross misconduct, for which your employer is allowed to terminate you on the spot. Of course, you can then take them to an employment tribunal who will then deliberate on if this was appropriate.
drakeandrews··on Nimrod: A new approach to metaprogramming
I presume by allocating memory yourself. It does mention that if you don't use the GC, it is removed from the final program.
drakeandrews··on Winamp shutting down on December 20th, 2013
Does it fade out songs when you pause them?

If so, where can I download it and where can I donate to whoever wrote it?

drakeandrews··on Coin
iPhone only, no chip and pin, won't work with any cash machine in the UK, no apparent protection against people skimming random cards (I'm suddenly very suspicious of anyone putting my card anywhere near an iPhone) AND it stores all your card details on their servers for no apparent reason?

Where can I sign up?

drakeandrews··on Getting website registration completely wrong
I like the idea, but you can't deduce name from email address, or at least not often enough to use it even to prefill the field in the form.
drakeandrews··on PhysicsJS Examples: Newton's Revenge
You're right. At a guess, as collisions appear to be perfectly elastic particles inside a clump are trying to move and instead of their shifting being dampened, it's causing the whole structure to begin to rotate which causes more in-clump collisions causing... until it spins apart. Sound reasonable?
drakeandrews··on PhysicsJS Examples: Newton's Revenge
This is because each "atom" is of a considerable size to the larger clumps and imparts its excess momentum as angular momentum when it joins a clump. "Atoms" that are rotating around a clump in the opposite direction tend to skip off, and thus don't join and slow the rotation. I think.
drakeandrews··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
I'm reimplementing the SQLite virtual machine in RPython, in the hopes that RPython's tracing JIT will speed up query execution. RPython (the toolkit behind PyPy) is cool because it allows you to build a JIT-enabled virtual machine with very little effort.

I'm also writing a comedy horror roleplaying game and getting to grips with all the less fun aspects of running a kickstarter campaign.

Unless we discover gravity is bound to the speed of light too.
drakeandrews··on Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander)
Yes.

A million times yes.

About a month ago now, my laptop's windows install decided to take a dive so I reinstalled windows and took it as an opportunity to dual boot ubuntu as well. Ubuntu worked out of the box. I'm still finding things that need drivers a month later in windows.

drakeandrews··on Nuclear fusion milestone passed at US lab
Functional Fusion Reacters! Strategic Functional Warheads! Functional Containment Disasters[1]!

This is fun.

[1] This is tongue in cheek.

drakeandrews··on Joblint: test tech jobs for sexism, culture, expectations, and recruiter fails
I was thinking about this recently too and was wondering if one could perhaps set up a service where you would hire a set of ghost writers to rewrite and manually sanitise all of the applications etc. for a job opening for a company (ideally one writer per job opening).
drakeandrews··on How a Relationship Dies on Facebook
Outside the Americas, you'll get a whole load of funny looks when you call them legos. It's like pointing out a field of sheeps.

drakeandrews··on What did the tech CEO say to the worker he wanted to automate?
"Passenger Service Agents" are on some, not all trains. And on about a third of the trains they are on, they are manually operating the train at full speed (generally for "diagnostic" (read as sanctioned joyriding) purposes, I am informed by a friend at TFL).
drakeandrews··on Ask HN: The Ludum Dare 27 Entries of HNers
It's not technically a LD entry (I spent far too long on non-game bits and forgot to actually add a game) but I'm quite proud of it and resolve to finish the damn thing eventually. Warning, Chrome(+WebGL) only, hideously unoptomised and sits there unresponsive for a few seconds before starting abruptly. WASD to steer, shift to thrust. Do not press space, space is broken:
