drakeandrews··on Why I'm saying goodbye to Dropbox and hello to SpiderOak Hive
If you are sufficiently paranoid about having to destroy the notebook, tissue paper and water soluble ink go a long way to making it easier. I made about a dozen for a murder mystery party about two years ago and still have one lying around somewhere. A small waterproof bag should make sure it isn't inadvertantly damaged in the rain.

This is in the UK, but is vaguely applicaple to the situation you describe, so take with a pinch of salt. A friend of mine had an accident about two months back and is unable to work. Despite having been certified as such by at least two psychiatrists and a whole host of other NHS staff, disability benefits don't kick in for six months due to the nature of his new found disability. I guess you're up shit creek if you don't have six months worth of savings in place.

The message(s) are the point. Misgendering people isn't nice, especially after someone has specifically laid out how they wish to be addressed. But yes, I will conceed I have been a little spammy and probably could have gone about it with less.

*Feel free to replace girl with another appropriate feminine noun, I know some people consider it diminutive but it's probably the closest alternative to guy I can think of right this moment.

Infrared keyboards already exist, they're generally unsatisfying and tempermental.
drakeandrews··on How Your Brain Becomes Addicted to Caffeine
Interestingly, I've found that a significant part of my own addiction is behavioural. If (for whatever reason), I know I'm not going to be able to drink tea for a few days, as long as I have something to replace it with that has an appropriate amount of ceremony to it I don't really exhibit the withdrawal symptoms the article mentions.

On the other hand, if I just try and stop I feel useless for about a week (possibly longer, I've only stopped for that long once).

Lab grown fur is an interesting prospect. We've got (almost) industrial scale lab-grown skin and a quick check with a friend who knows much more than I informs me that she can't think of any barriers to growing fur this way. You could even insert chemical/genetic markers such that one could guarantee that a given piece of clothing was made from lab grown and not "real" fur.

Also, not a huge fan of mink. Other furs, perhaps. But not mink.

As a second aside, if we could produce fur, what about human hair, for wigs? But you'd likely have more regulatory issues with human hair than otherwise.

A better analogy might be someone selling armour piercing rounds marketed as "cop killers", espousing their efficiency at getting through standard issue police vests, with a tiny disclaimer that you shouldn't kill cops.
drakeandrews··on 'WWIII Queen's speech' script revealed
Of course not. But our politicians tend to have all the charisma of a pile of gravel, as opposed to our royals who are usually pretty decent orators.

Assuming you have the original, non-biometric passport, access to materials and suitable printers, plotters etc and a handful of other passports of the appropriate nationality people don't mind being "recycled", quite a while.

Except bitcoin establishes a public, permanent and irrefutable link between yourself (or at least information that, except in specific circumstances, can be linked back to yourself) and the provider.

drakeandrews··on Foreign Student Dependence
You would be surprised. I have a fair few fellow students who speak English well enough to hold basic conversations but the moment you need to talk about more than the weather they lack the understanding of the language to put the sentences together (like someone who can piece together code suddenly being asked to synthesize a new program from scratch). A few fair better in technical subjects but at least for one English university, this doesn't appear to be a barrier.

(As an aside, I had a pair of Portuguese TAs who spoke very good English, but had a slight issue with the letters of the alphabet. And a couple of the English letters share names with different Portuguese ones which made for interesting Elementary Logic tutorials.)

drakeandrews··on Trends that will create demand for an Unconditional Basic Income
The big issue with UBI entirely replacing the welfare system is that it ignores those who require more money due to disabilities. Person X can subsist on £Y/week, but person Z needs fooprazatine which costs a non-negligable quantity of £Y (there are also other, more nuanced scenarios but drugs come to mind first). Of course there are ways around it and medical benefit fraud is already incredibly low (it's hard to fake that you need a carer or an expensive regimen of drugs (painkillers notwithstanding)).
drakeandrews··on Why your next project should be public domain
You can insert a morality clause into your code. However, a broad one ("do no evil" essentially) will make your code unusable unless you define, in exact detail and in legalese, your own moral code. You could prohibit individual activities, but then you run the risk of having your code used for undesirable activities that you previously could not have foreseen.

As far as I am aware, most deductibles are per-incident. If you have a $5k (figure pulled from arse) deductible and paid $1200 last month, $2300 last week and have a bill for $2000 today on three visits for three separate things (with three separate bills), you still owe $2000 because that bill is under the deductible.
drakeandrews··on Making the web fun again
Tumblr (assuming it survives as it exists now) fills the niche that geocities once did, except it slaps a nice UI on making updates and presents some minor restrictions on what you can do (you need to find somewhere to put some of your assets that can't really be hosted by tumblr themselves). Their theme editor even has (if my memory does not trick me, I'm at work and don't particularly want to log into my tumblr dashboard) a reasonable HTML editor. If all the eye melting gif backgrounds, autoplay music and late-90s knock off novelty cursors are anything to go by, a lot of tumblr is probably a more worthy descendant of geocities.

There is certainly a shitton of content created on tumblr, even if you discount the value from aggregation. In addition, Neocities 10mb limitation hugely limits what you can do. Setting aside 1MB for CSS, JS and images and assuming you have a 85/15 content/markup split in your files, you get ~150k words. If you even dare adding images, the possibilities for archiving any content you produce are shot.
