dragon-hn··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Finding parts for older cars is a very real concern, aside from a handful of cars that are very popular with enthusiasts.
dragon-hn··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
If we want to be ridiculous, should we talk about Trump sharing intelligence with Russians, causing American allies to limit intelligence sharing?
dragon-hn··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
It would be the most effective way to hurt Americans.

But it isn’t politically possible for Canada to do this. The two segments that would be most effective, oil & gas and potash happen to come from provinces that already have significant issues with the federal government. One is even flirting with separation, which would be inflamed by export taxes.

Canada is also very venerable to similar actions by the Americans. Refined oil products, fertilizers and oil & gas pipeline transit all come from the Americans.

It is fun to imagine Canada sticking it to the Americans with export taxes, but it will never happen.

dragon-hn··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
Bonkers. Almost a million commits in less than 2 months.
dragon-hn··on Swift Package Index joins Apple
I guess that explains why Dave Verwer handed off ownership of the iOS Dev Weekly newsletter.

Always great to see community members see success.

dragon-hn··on Alberta to hold referendum on whether to remain in Canada
Americans may have trouble understanding that the constitution means something given what is going on there right now.
dragon-hn··on Oracle may slash up to 30k jobs to fund AI data-centers as US banks retreat
It can get so much worse than what we have in the West.
dragon-hn··on Peter Thiel: 2,436 emails with Epstein from 2014 to 2019
> Ah yes, because claiming that people are eating cats and dogs, something that actually happens in some parts of the world, is the same thing as claiming that the president ate babies.

We are actually saying that the president raped teen girls. Which is something that happens around the world - even happens within the orbit of Trump given the conviction of Epstein.

dragon-hn··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
Correction: the class war already started long ago. Unfortunately the lower classes are not only getting trounced, they mostly don’t know the war is happening.
dragon-hn··on France Aiming to Replace Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.
They supported it because they saw an opportunity to remove limitations on them, both domestically (see FCC, restrictions on state level AI laws, etc) as well as internationally (regulations, digital taxes, etc in the EU and Canada, for example).
dragon-hn··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
I think you are giving Trump way too much credit. He is a much simpler man - he sees a weakness or some leverage, then he will use that for financial gain. No more than that.
dragon-hn··on GM will ditch Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on all its cars, not just EVs
For what it is worth, there are lots of double DIN aftermarket AirPlay options for a C6. No need for an iPad.
dragon-hn··on America is in a serious jobs slump
That may or may not be true. But what is immediately clear is that Trump has no idea how to accomplish it. Americans are in I believe 6 months of contraction in manufacturing jobs.
dragon-hn··on America is in a serious jobs slump
But none of that really changed. The money printer is still going ant the same pace, and will only be going faster in the coming year.

And the Federal layoffs from the DOGE nonsense haven’t even started to hurt since so many are still getting paid.

Something else is the source of this…

dragon-hn··on America is in a serious jobs slump
Maybe I am missing something but ~1/3 of voting age Americans voted for this. Trump was very clear that tariffs were coming, and even warned that Americans should be prepared for some tough times.

And another ~1/3 were comfortable enough with this to not bother voting.

I think people deserve what they vote for.

dragon-hn··on Apple wants a sysdiagnose for a feature request
I got a request a few months ago for a sysdiagnose for a bug I filed for their in app purchase server API.

There really is very little reason to file bugs with Apple now.

dragon-hn··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
> It had Republican support so it would've gotten the 60 votes in Senate without needing to get reconciliation

That is a bit of a jump. It wasn’t too long ago we had the Republicans vote against their own bill.

dragon-hn··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
> Or only when it crosses ~$100 million like President Trump did ?

I believe you missed another option. The President-elect has been convicted for fraud, is a big believer in quid pro quo, and did similar actions in his first term.

Sometimes it really is about corruption.

dragon-hn··on Airline demand between Canada and United States collapses, down 70%+
Will the Americans stop massive dairy over production that is supported by government programs like “government cheese”?

Or massive farm subsidies?

You need to expand your view beyond the latest talking points.

dragon-hn··on The F-35 as a Subscription Service
Germany has purchased many Typhoons.
dragon-hn··on What a trade war would mean for the US, in 9 charts
Just over a year ago the agreed upon settlement process from NAFTA 2.0 ruled that Canada was not doing anything out of line with the 2018 agreement. The current quota system was also agreed to in 2018.

What we are seeing from the Americans is so far out of line that if the blanket tariffs are applied today, it is a clear turning point in relations with Canada, and really the entire world. There is no going back from this.

dragon-hn··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
> If Meta, and others pushing on AI, are not reducing heads in 2025 -- it would kind of undermine the value of the massive investments they are making

If we take Zuckerberg at face value, then they aren’t cutting headcount, but instead replacing ‘low performers’ with new blood.

dragon-hn··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
It is important to differentiate between immigrants vs temporary workers and foreign students. What Canadians seem to have issue with is the latter, which is being abused by Canadian companies.

The anger should be aimed at the rich in Canada abusing the system, as well as the paid for politicians enabling the abuse. It shouldn’t be aimed at the newcomers.

dragon-hn··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
The current state of the US is the roadblock to this. We already have very high economic integration between Canada and the US, but we now have to deal with a belligerent and incompetent American administration coming in that seems dead set on extracting as much from Canada as possible.

Canada needs to move away from the Americans as much as possible. Easier said than done given that America is an economic powerhouse.

dragon-hn··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
My job is typically to deliver features that make the company money. The writing of code is just a part of that.

In my experience the people who solely focus on the code end up being significantly less effective.

dragon-hn··on Effects of Gen AI on High Skilled Work: Experiments with Software Developers
This is an unfortunate attitude. The current state of things in our industry is a reflection of this “not my job” way of doing things.
dragon-hn··on When new hires get paid more, top performers resign first
The company puts A LOT of effort into its program for hiring new grads. But is horribly inept when it comes to providing a career path for individual contributors.

So unless you manage to get a promotion to a senior IC position (like me), your compensation stagnates.

dragon-hn··on When new hires get paid more, top performers resign first
It is fairly obvious. If it is expected that a product or set of features will drive X revenue per month, and you are late by Y months, then a decision that directly contributes to that delay just cost the company money.
dragon-hn··on When new hires get paid more, top performers resign first
I just had a very valuable teammate quit this week from lack of salary progression. New-ish grads are making more than him for much lesser jobs. The business refused to do even a token salary increase because of the ‘economic climate’

Now a critical project won’t happen on time, which will cost the company many magnitudes more in revenue than it would have cost them with a token increase.

Oops.

dragon-hn··on The Apple Vision Pro’s missing apps
Apple was giving out pre release devices to partners that they really wanted to be ready for launch.

All 3 of these companies could have had hardware well ahead of launch.
