dquigley··on Facebook shuts down page of lead DADT repeal group based on fake complaint
Exactly my thought. What if someone decided to start doing this for politicians and political parties? And then goes to YouTube and reports a bunch of political ads for copyright infringement as well?

I'm not recommending that someone actually try this, but unfortunately I'm afraid that might be more effective than tech sites blacking out their sites for a day in protest.

dquigley··on In 1951 there was a children's U-238 Atomic Energy Lab playset for $50
I realize the experience I described cost quite a bit, but for some context, our high school was in a blue collar town. We several neighboring high schools in white collar towns, that didn't have what we had (and in fact were sending a few of their students to our school to participate in these classes). Instead they had fancier sports teams and facilities than we did. It was a matter of prioritizing money and energy, not necessarily spending more of it.

Maybe most high schools have gotten that way, but I had a very different experience. Made some chemical mixture in Chemistry that would go up in a puff if it was bumped. In my high school engineering classes, we stripped the motor out of a CNC router, attached a custom built head on it and then connected that router's computer to another control box we used to control two robotic arms, a conveyor belt, and a couple of control valves for water.

There are still a few good high schools left at least.

dquigley··on Teachers write their own online textbook, save district $175,000
Thanks!
dquigley··on Voyager 2 to Switch to Backup Thruster Set
That these things still work is an amazing feat of engineering.
dquigley··on Teachers write their own online textbook, save district $175,000
Maybe I missed it in the article, but what online tool were they using to develop the textbook?
dquigley··on Can Anyone Really Create Jobs?
An interesting idea, but do you think many American citizens would take these jobs, even with subsidized wages? I personally don't think they would, but I'd be interested to hear what others think.
dquigley··on Outsourcing Startups
Using the word outsourcing I believe biases this conversation in a negative way. Another way to title this article positively would be, "You can find high quality programming talent outside the Valley & even the US, which can save your startup cash". Because if you treated them like any other startup employee (part of the team), just working from a distance, and not as an outsourced developer, I think what you are suggesting has a big potential.

To use a headhunter analogy. There is too much hunting in the valley for the best, so go outside, even outside the US to find great talent affordably.

dquigley··on Evercube
Regardless of whether this is the "best" solution for everyone, I'm excited to see people trying these ideas, open sourcing their designs and creating space for there to even be a discussion like this.

Pardon the cheesy line, but it's a move from just reviewing hardware to being able to actually revise it if you don't like something the original designer decided to do.

dquigley··on Abu Dhabi Traffic Accidents Dropped 40% During the BlackBerry Outage
But when you live in the city like I do, just crossing the street can be made dangerous by these same people.

[EDIT] Plus people walking and texting in the city can be just as bad when driving in Chicago when they walk out into an intersection without looking.

dquigley··on Siri and Her Girls: Why So Many Robot Helpers Are Ladies
That was my thought as well when I saw the headline. Also this article explains briefly the history of it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitching_Betty
dquigley··on Microsoft's acquisition of Skype is a done deal
I have to admit I didn't realize it wasn't a screenshot until I came here to see what people's comments were.
dquigley··on Why you should have a long commute - The opportunity of commuting
Great explanation of how to redeem a long commute. Making the best of your situation, and using it to your advantage. (i.e., Life Hacking!)
dquigley··on Show HN: my 4-y-o son drew a video game. He drew then we hacked together.
Great idea and execution. From my perspective the point isn't how great the programmin is, but that you got your son to view himself as a creator, and to recognize that he can make things! Awesome father-son idea!
dquigley··on How My Popular Site was Banned by Google
Matt, Would it be possible/financially practically for Google to offer a premium support option that would pay for itself?

Figure out how much it costs to respond to someone, offer that as a flat fee with a clear indication, that paying only gets you a consult on what's wrong with your site, and not any promise that it will get you reinstated. Basically what you did in your comments above.

I would personally make it expensive to make sure people don't try continually working the system by paying for the consult to get inside information about how to rank higher on Google.

I work in a support center, so I definitely recognize that it's expensive and difficult to do well at scale, so I appreciate that you're looking into how to do it!

dquigley··on A Short Rant About Hosting
Sarcasm?
dquigley··on Road crash laser scanners to save millions of pounds
I've thought this would be a great idea for a long time. Glad to see the technology is catching up and being implemented. My only concern would be that someone forgets a crucial angle or some level of detail is missed and then someone ends up blaming the new technology. Honestly you can miss information whether you're doing it the old way or with a scanner like this, but whenever you change processes, it's easy to blame the new technology.
dquigley··on PixelJET - Dreamweaver meets Firebug, in JavaScript
Anyone else notice that their logo is extremely similiar to Delicious' logo.

PixelJET - http://public5010.thepixeljet.com/demo/buttons.png

Delicious - http://l.yimg.com/hr/15213726/img/delicious.48px.gif

Looks like a cool service though. I'm not trying to knock the idea at all, I just couldn't help but notice the similarities.

dquigley··on An Open Letter To Business People
It might be worthwhile to add some contact information to your profile or a link to your blog about your MVP. Otherwise those of us in the Midwest who might be interested can't ever find out more. :) I'm in Chicago and love to connect with other who are actually doing it.
dquigley··on Offer HN: I will review and critique your CV.
It does sounds like there might be an opportunity though for a developer-focused CV review service? HNcvreview.com anyone?

Maybe you could get away with a flat rate if you provided additional services besides the review. Maybe taking the CVs and turning them into a profile for them that's indexable by Google or creating a "reverse job application" like a couple people have been floating around lately here?

dquigley··on Try Ubuntu On Web Browser (Online) via Edubuntu Weblive
Trying it out now. This is a great concept for trying out a new OS. Props to Stéphane Graber for providing the hosting!

[UPDATE] - Couldn't get it to load. It started connecting and then timed out. Maybe I'm just unlucky number 11!

dquigley··on Rate my startup: KeyTweet, a Twitter client that learns what you like
Definitely agree with rjurney that you need to eventually update the homepage, but sweet idea for an app. I've signed up, but I'm still waiting to see how it actually works out my tweetstream
