dpolaske··on Why did your startup fail?
I recently shut down my startup as well, and definitely feel I learned a lot from the experience.

My startup failed because we did not seek customer validation until our product was already built (after months of development). And at that point we realized we had built a product that nobody wanted. From now on I will not start building a product unless I already have customers who want/need it!

dpolaske··on Ask HN: Has anyone refused to work in a typical 9-5 job?
Its not the 9-5 part about a job that I don't usually like. 9-5 jobs usually imply that you are working for a mid to large size company for which you have little say in the overall direction and decisions of the company. Additionally, you may not believe in the overall mission of the company. Those are the two aspects that make working a typical 9-5 not the place for me.
dpolaske··on The underappreciated power of common courtesy
I know exactly what you mean, I'm in the middle of the application process right now. When companies have a poor level of communication with me as a candidate, I definitely rethink my interest in them.
dpolaske··on Ask HN: If you could automate one thing in your home, what would it be?
I hate wiping my ass, and I'm not a fan of the water things (bidet). I want my toilet to automatically fold up some tp and wipe my ass.
dpolaske··on Ask HN: Is college for everyone?
The knowledge you acquire strictly from your course work can be duplicated else where at a much cheaper price. If you don't need someone looking over your shoulder you should have no trouble picking up this knowledge on your own, and for that matter more relevant knowledge.

However, the social knowledge you pick up and the relationships you develop at college (especially if you spend all 4 years at the same university) are what I most value from my college experience. There are other avenues to develop these social skills and build a network, but college offers a great opportunity to do so.
