dpig_··on What’s the difference between an -ectomy, an -ostomy, and an -otomy? (1986)
That, too, is already there. They mean -opocene.

Anecdotally, those don't cure procrastination. They mostly cure issues with consistency and throughput once the task has begun. Starting the task is still the same hill to climb as it was before.
dpig_··on What's Going on with ‘Nonplussed’? (2017)
I promise you that the kids do know what literal means. They deserve more credit.
dpig_··on Ramanujan's lost notebook
In the early stages of learning something totally new (a new language, etc) I will be completely confounded by something, only to wake up and find that I fully understand it. It's a spooky feeling because it really doesn't seem like you had the prerequisites for that understanding before you slept (although of course you must have).
dpig_··on Learn OAuth by building a client with Node.js
I really enjoyed the way you presented that, really helped me to focus while reading.
dpig_··on Ask HN: Hindi Conversational Text-to-Speech?
> Indian accents are narrative and not conversational in nature

What are some examples of how these things differ? I've been exploring Hindi recently, but find that I'm learning some pretty stuffy speech from Snell's books.

dpig_··on All billionaires under 30 have inherited their wealth, research finds
Well no because my having received a free meal isn't something I can leverage into considerable loans or investor interest.

Additionally, well, yes - 'self made' is a myth when our societies and economies are a network. Nothing occurs in a vacuum.

dpig_··on Banner blindness
I'm the same. Especially when the banners are animating in full-colour next to static text I'm trying to focus on.
dpig_··on Is the Sun Conscious? (2021) [pdf]
I haven't read Castaneda since I was in high school. I wonder how different I would feel about those books if I read them now. What would you say the deep flaws of that series were?
dpig_··on Why quantum entanglement doesn't allow faster-than-light communication (2016)
Also the "there are no secrets" angle is pretty dependent on the FTL too.
dpig_··on How do MRI Headphones work? (2022)
You skipped too far into the future with the "huge library" bit. Fixed:

"long, long before you could watch [Season 2, Episodes 4 - 6 of Comedy Central Roast]."

I already have a personal (NSA) agent that does this for me.

Animated banner ads were something I adapted to completely ignore during my time on the web 20 years ago. After that, a decade of ad-blockers softened my calluses and now when I see an animated banner ad on a news site I begin to twitch and spasm.

Would love to hear the elaboration on what the hell you mean by that.

dpig_··on Figure out who's leaving the company: dump, diff, repeat
> A man moves from East Germany to Siberia, where he knows his letters will be censored. He establishes a code with his friends: anything written in blue ink is honest and true; anything written in red ink is false and only there to get the truth past the censors. A month goes by and the man’s friends receive a letter written in blue ink: “Everything is wonderful here. Stores are full of good food. Movie theaters show good films from the West. Apartments are large and luxurious. The only thing you cannot buy is red ink." [1]

> It's also temporary and goes away the moment the drug disappears.

Some meditative insight might reveal that, in fact, everything is temporary. Therapies don't need to be cures.

dpig_··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
People are very happy to play competitive VR shooters over a cable, so I can't imagine latency would be an issue broadly.

Fair point w/r/t cooling. Again, I think distributing components around the whole head, rather than 100% on the face, is the way to go.

dpig_··on Vision Pro Teardown – Why those fake eyes look so weird
I regularly switch between the Quest and the PSVR2. The Quest has a whole system running on your forehead, while the PSVR2 is always-wired, and leverages the PS5 for compute.

The difference in weight is phenomenal. I would absolutely love to have all of that extra stuff offloaded into a pocket pack. Or, at the very least, parked behind the head as a counterbalance.

dpig_··on Virtual Reality: still not quite there, again (2017)
I have been playing online multiplayer VR games for years, with servers full of people who would beg to differ.

The things you report (initial novelty, nausea, uncanny valley, little justification for the expense) simply are not applicable to anyone who plays VR for longer than a few Beat Saber sessions in front of friends & family.

Of course it's a niche, but there is demand. Especially in Gen Z, many of whom received Quest HMDs over the last few years and have been rabid adopters who will grow up to be committed customers. Lobbies for basically every game on offer are full of them (for better or worse).

dpig_··on What Is Incoherence?
*Chocolate > Vanilla; Vanilla > Strawberry; Strawberry > Chocolate*

Having real trouble grokking what is incoherent / irrational about this. Seems to me that e.g. preferring Strawberry to Chocolate does not interact at all with my feelings about Vanilla in some other contest?

Sure - given a choice between three flavours, this set of preferences gets you nowhere. But isn't that because we're comparing three objects, two at a time?

dpig_··on My toddler still loves planes, so I upgraded her radar
There's a streaming service in Australia called Binge, and their UX makes me feel something like road rage.

There is a horizontal row of elements for the Seasons of a show, and then below that is a horizontal row of thumbnails for each episode in that season.

The only way you know whether you are currently focused on the Seasons or the Episodes row is that the element you are focusing is perhaps 2.5% larger than the other elements.

There is no border, no shaders over the element - nothing to tell you where you are without arbitrarily moving the focus around just to gather some context.

dpig_··on Machine Learning Is Still Too Hard for Software Engineers
I guess I have always interpreted the use of kernel there as meaning something small. But you are probably right.
