dpig_··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
Someone just shared an extension that inserts random jump scares onto social media sites that you want to avoid. Maybe adding jump scares to work applications can help people blink more often, too.

Any plans to add Hindi, being the third-most spoken language in the world?

> Online multiplayer games must (yes must) take place on servers with human admins.

The sheer scale of this arbitrary requirement is hilarious.

dpig_··on Games Workshop and the big ambition of a miniatures business
Yeah, I think GW is well aware that their 40K and Fantasy universes have incredible draw. Even given the enormous barrier to entry for the premier tabletop game, the IP is ubiquitous.

Unlike WOTC, who seem so flippant about their MTG IP that they're happily slushing it with Marvel, Avatar, Spongebob etc. And even when they're not, they're releasing in-universe sets now that are literally "planeswalkers in cowboy hats," "planeswalkers doing pod-racing," "planeswalkers but its Stranger Things."

dpig_··on Firebase bill is usually $50, but I was surprised to see a $70k bill in one day
Actually my complaint was about using IaaS as a hobbyist, but sure.
dpig_··on Some things to expect in 2025
What a god awful thing to hear.
dpig_··on Firebase bill is usually $50, but I was surprised to see a $70k bill in one day
As far as I can tell, no cloud products outside of consumer-facing SaaS allow you to set hard limits or automatic stops. The best you can do is configure spending alerts (and hope you're awake to see them).

I've found it pretty nerve-wracking, then, to attempt to get some hobby projects online. I don't like writing blank checks for my hobbies..

dpig_··on What I Learned Failing to Finish a Game in 2024
A community of 100 players is totally achievable if you are willing to put some time and effort in on social media presence, like a YouTube channel. I worked on a small game and managed to host a Discord server with 40-50 members relatively quickly.
dpig_··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
For most of the world, your platforms are already foreign-owned.
dpig_··on David Lynch has died
Agreed. The difference between a book and a film is that they are completely different things. You can't just graft a story from one directly onto another and expect results.
dpig_··on Apple's new AI feature rewords scam messages to make them look more legit
My mom's iPhone should not be summarising spam messages if we "aren't quite there yet."

What kind of an anemic society do you want to live in, that everyone should only be an expert on capital-P Profitable subjects?
dpig_··on Silver amulet is the oldest evidence of Christianity north of the Alps
Religion as banal courtroom drama.
dpig_··on Most iPhone owners see little to no value in Apple Intelligence so far
Non-sequitur, but you seem like someone who says 'virtue-signalling' unironically.
dpig_··on My son (9 yrs old) used plain JavaScript to make a game, and wants your feedback
I'm curious to know why you think Godot's web exports are too poor to be useful even to a 9 year old? I've published multiple HTML5 games on itch.io using Godot, including some with P2P multiplayer functionality. Apart from complete inoperability on Safari, I haven't run into many issues?
dpig_··on Every board game rulebook is awful [pdf]
A few decades ago we did as you suggest. We automated TTRPGs and called them CRPGs, and ARPGs, and MMORPGs. And yet - TTRPGs are as popular as ever, despite apparently being subordinate.
dpig_··on Every board game rulebook is awful [pdf]
Can you remember any examples of the rules questions that came up?

Companies will definitely do an accurate and exhaustive job of that.
dpig_··on The Rise of Bluesky
I vastly prefer comments as second class citizens anyway. Twitter felt like such a rat's nest sometimes.
dpig_··on Hackers abuse popular Godot game engine to infect PCs
That's a relief. I made some contributions to a free repo that I use, and got a bit suspicious - I wouldn't want to be a part of any club that would have me as a member.
dpig_··on Hackers abuse popular Godot game engine to infect PCs
Is there a list of confirmed dodgy repos?
dpig_··on Teen mathematicians tie knots through a mind-blowing fractal
Super cool. I would have liked to have seen a similar visualisation for how they solved it on the Sierpinski gasket.
dpig_··on A Guide to Server-Side Rendering
You're not paranoid. ChatGPT has a really obvious format. If I could bold text on HN (not that I think I want that), I could do an even better impersonation:

I am a 3-sentence paragraph giving a high level overview of the topic. This is the second sentence, which starts to fill in a little more detail about the topic. And the purpose of this sentence is to introduce the sub-topics and bullet points I'm about to provide.

Brief sub-topic title

1. Bold Word - A short, snappy sentence about the first item.

2. Bold Word - More of the above, about the second item.

3. Bold Word - Again, a snappy description of the third item.

Brief second sub-topic title

1. Bold Word - A short, snappy sentence about the first item.

2. Bold Word - More of the above, about the second item.

3. Bold Word - Notice that all these descriptions fit on one neat line.

4. Bold Word - Four items is the longest list you're likely to see.

dpig_··on How to give a senior leader feedback without getting fired
Even if you do it in private, they may take it as a sign of a subordinate who has designs on their job. Or on toppling them at any rate. Insecurity is everywhere.
dpig_··on How did you do on the AI art Turing test?
Agreed. AI art subtracts intentionality.

dpig_··on A BBC navigation bar component broke depending on the external monitor
I appreciate and fully agree with your perspective on this. A thing was treated as if it were some other thing, and acceptably failed to be that other thing.
dpig_··on A BBC navigation bar component broke depending on the external monitor
Isn't that exactly what the article prescribes?
