dp-hackernews··on Daily energy expenditure through the human life course
Did anyone happen to read any of the responses to the article at https://www.science.org/

It seems that others don't fully support their findings either.

dp-hackernews··on Daily energy expenditure through the human life course
No mention of how a persons lifestyle changes over that period though.

Surely there is a correlation to the causation?

The head-bone is connected to the neck-bone etc...

You cannot study figures in isolation and expect them to yield some meaningful results while ignoring the influence of other figures upon those results.

- Kids move around a lot, and they're still growing/developing

- Teenagers move more constructively i.e. sports, and they're still growing/developing

- Adults move a bit less, and have almost stopped growing/developing

- Older adults try do keep moving, but with other life responsibilities it gets hard to put the same time in

- Older adults become less and less bothered about moving

- Even older adults have acquired illness and injuries and can't move as much

Seems quite simple and obvious no? - Maybe...

Those that don't fit the mould have some other reason that makes then more of an outlier to the norm.

If life today didn't offer as much assistance as the past, we would all be a lot more healthy - not to mention more active, you know walking and manual work etc...

Not to forget that the abundance of food (good and bad) will have a bearing on the results. Maybe the older people that can't afford as much food are the outliers - and better benchmark.

Unless you are suffering from malnutrition, or you are overeating the wrong sort of food (good and bad) then your metabolism, unless affected by biological factors should be pretty stable.

Isn't this what being in homeostasis means?

Doesn't the body adapt to effects of S.A.I.D. - Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands.

dp-hackernews··on How to calculate how much water you should drink
Amusing and unrealistic if you consider our ancestors and cultures in hot and cold climates...

It makes me wonder how some people don't seem to recognize, that we as a species have been on this planet for quite some time now, and that IS the greater part of out existence on this planet when compared to how long we've studied science and medicine of today!

The timeline of either is heavily weighted on the side absent of anything we would call "modern." :-)

dp-hackernews··on How to calculate how much water you should drink
If your spit isn't wet like water, then you could do with a drink, although being in an anxious state may indicate a false positive.

Thirst is an early'ish warning, but not early enough if you've eaten food that needs more water in order for your body to process it than you have consumed prior to eating, or you have diarrhea, or you are low on electrolytes, or your kidneys have problems monitoring and maintaining the balance of said electrolytes.

Manic Miner

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manic_Miner

Many, many hours of a misspent youth were spent on this game, until all 20 levels were complete, and could be done in one go without loosing any lives, and then, as quickly as possible just for fun! The levels would even feature in my dreams! :-)

dp-hackernews··on Can a Rubik's Cube be brute-forced?
Indeed! I especially liked the exploding Rubik's cubes! - you know, the cheaper ones that you had to put Vaseline onto make them twist easier. Therein lies the problem, if they jammed mid twist, they ran the risk of spontaneous disassembly! :-)

...the same is true for swapping two stickers on a corner.

If you alter the sequence of colours, you alter the finished pattern.

Therefore rendering the cube unsolvable.

dp-hackernews··on Can a Rubik's Cube be brute-forced?
Not true.

Take a solved cube and twist a corner. Now jumble the cube and try to solve.

dp-hackernews··on LastPass users locked out due to MFA resets
Worse than that, LP notes are multi line which makes importing a bloody nightmare! Especially if you have any CSV characters in the note.

I had to modify the native CSV with some vim magic to add a line delimiter for each record so it allowed for spanning over multiple lines in order to successfully import each entry - which also required the importer to allow for an additional EOR marker.

Even then there wasn't a 1:1 column match between pw apps.

Without this step though all sorts of hell breaks loose, and if you don't notice the columns got out of sync during import because a note had a few commas in it what good is it to you really. It's a hell of a mess that you may not notice until its too late.

There should also be a verify feature for any import that can query the original source via some API calls - or use that to do the import. Of course nobody is going to provide that because it means users can leave their ecosystem too easily - but the other thinking is customized backups to a PGP destination suitable for direct import via the sale API calls.

This was for LP to KeePass BTW.
