My guess is that when Llama leaked on 4chan and it blew up in the community it somewhat forced their hand to go with an open strategy. But they also have a history with pytorch of reaping the benefits of an open strategy. The benefits are well explained in Google's leaked "We Have No Moat" document.
downWidOutaFite··on A physicist runs the math on direct air capture and warns it's a distraction
Capturing only makes sense at the emission sources where the co2 concentration is high, like at power plants or tailpipes. But that would mean the costs would be borne by the emitters but they'd rather externalize those costs to all of us.
downWidOutaFite··on A physicist runs the math on direct air capture and warns it's a distraction
The calculations here are based on the laws of thermodynamics that cannot be broken. This represents the ideal efficiency that is way better than we could achieve in real life.

Amazon bought goodreads and crippled its discoverability features.

The competition is an illusion, match.com bought up all the popular apps.
downWidOutaFite··on Israel reportedly used fake social accounts to garner support from US lawmakers
It's crazy that AIPAC is not registered as a foreign agent. They funnel orders directly from Netanyahu to our politicians.
downWidOutaFite··on Parable of the Sofa
Nope. Marketers always spam, buy or copy any “neutral third party” to death.
downWidOutaFite··on Parable of the Sofa
The mid-tier has been hollowed out keeping prices high but increasing the profit margin. From the Dwell article:

> Today’s $1,000 sofa is not in the same league of construction as a $299 Sears sofa (about $1,100 today) from 1980. That thing was made of actual wood.

downWidOutaFite··on An analysis of studies pertaining to masks from 1978 to 2023
The authors were very publicly biased against masks before this paper. It's hard to take it objectively.
downWidOutaFite··on ICC prosecutor seeks arrest warrants against Sinwar and Netanyahu for war crimes
Part of why it's so hard to communicate about these issues is that we all inhabit a world of propaganda that we have to work hard to see through. But in this case Hamas didn't claim anything. The people that were on the ground describe a deliberate ambush by IDF soldiers: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/1/flour-massacre-how-g...
downWidOutaFite··on ICC prosecutor seeks arrest warrants against Sinwar and Netanyahu for war crimes
The biggest mistake in the last 20 years was when Hamas took power and Netanyahu took an immediate hardline, imposing a crushing blockade, full demonization propaganda, "mowing the lawn" policy, and refused to even try to work with Hamas from day one. But Netanyahu has never wanted peace.
downWidOutaFite··on ICC prosecutor seeks arrest warrants against Sinwar and Netanyahu for war crimes
The IDF counts every grown man that they kill as a "Hamas operative"

downWidOutaFite··on Google is overhauling search results with AI overviews and Gemini organization
But Google has shaped the internet to be the way it is. At some point over the last 10 years they gave up on fighting inorganic seo spam sites and decided to join in and profit off of it.

downWidOutaFite··on Deaf girl is cured in world first gene therapy trial
Funny because I feel the opposite. Health care is so broken with all the politics, insurance, bureaucracy, financialization, etc that the vast majority of people are not able to reap the rewards of progress. Even the science is perverted because of bad incentives and only potentially lucrative research is funded.
downWidOutaFite··on How bad are satellite megaconstellations for astronomy?
ISPs were paid billions to do this in the US and then stole the money and didn't do it thanks to regulatory capture.

Some choice quotes from your Haarez link:

"However, at Shura Base, to which most of the bodies were taken for purposes of identification, there were five forensic pathologists at work. In that capacity, they also examined bodies that arrived completely or partially naked in order to examine the possibility of rape. According to a source knowledgeable about the details, there were no signs on any of those bodies attesting to sexual relations having taken place or of mutilation of genitalia."

"200 bodies were documented. These teams did not document a single case of sexual assault or cases of genital mutilation. "

"the intelligence material collected by the police and the intelligence bodies, including footage from terrorists' body cameras, does not contain visual documentation of any acts of rape themselves. "

If candidates know going in that it's a leetcode interview it filters for "do you want to work here so much that you'll spend a month or two drilling on these exercises". Which can be a useful filter if there are thousands of qualified applicants.
downWidOutaFite··on When do we stop finding new music?
Im much the same, but today I'm constantly in the search for anything new, anything in any genre that breaks the well-worn formulae and surprises me, but it's honestly hard to find, everything is derivative.

downWidOutaFite··on Don't waste your time recycling plastic
I find this attitude disgusting. There should be a law against the government purposefully lying to us for propaganda purposes, no matter how good the cause might be.

downWidOutaFite··on Santa Barbara's collective memory, sold for kindling
"separating the value from the risk" is euphemism for removing all financial cushion and making sure the pain of any downturn is borne only by employees and customers, or it could even mean purposefully killing off what is considered to be a worthless business and an inefficient use of assets. It's usually done by monstrous new owners who have zero care for the people or community or legacy that they destroy. Their view of the world is only through maximizing financial calculations.

Progressives' general anti-business bias blinds them to the need to protect small to medium businesses from the true capitalist evils such as vulture capitalists. Things like rent control could be useful tools for protecting communities from the devastation that can be caused by financial engineering preying on real businesses.

downWidOutaFite··on The Pentagon's Silicon Valley Problem
So Gazans are blamed for voting for Hamas's "from the river to the sea" 15 years ago, but Israelis are blameless and "just want the hostages back" even though they have repeatedly voted for Likud's "from the river to the sea" over and over again ever since Likud's terrorist branch assassinated Yitzhak Rabin and his peace plan 30 years ago.
downWidOutaFite··on The one about the web developer job market
Tons of developers got the axe or quit
downWidOutaFite··on The one about the web developer job market
I honestly think that a lot of the tech layoffs can be attributed to Elon Musk. When he bought twitter he started a social media campaign attacking developers as pampered, overpayed, etc. He then did the massive layoffs and twitter mostly kept running fine. Other CEOs took notice and have followed suit. Investors love it and have put pressure on the whole industry creating a trend.

It's basically an attack of capital against labor. Maybe we should have listened all those years when people kept saying we needed a tech union.
