dougp··on Poll: How many Bitcoins do you have?
He is charging .3333 of a bitcoin for a $75 gift card. Which is fair since a bitcoin is $223
dougp··on Rick Falkvinge: Why free speech is harmed by the ban on child porn
It may be rare but it happened to the mayor of a town in maryland.

dougp··on A Dad’s Plea To Developers Of iPad Apps For Children
Because you can't spy on what the user is typing in the mail or text message composer views on ios.
dougp··on What happens when it's all glass?
Every Lenovo I have used at work in the past 2 years has put out this super high pitched sound. Like the sound you could hear from an old tv. It drives me absolutely out of my mind to the point where I have to wear headphones when using one.
dougp··on Typecasting: The Use (and Misuse) of Period Typography in Movies
This is hardly specialized knowledge but in 24 after every commercial break we were treated to a digital clock displaying the current time. They were using some digital clock number font that was not monospaced so the numbers spread and shrink right in front of you as the clock "ticks", which of course would never happen on a real clock face.
dougp··on Apple Magic Trackpad
If its like the laptops you press down with 2 fingers at once.
dougp··on We are like prisoners... We do not have a life, only work.
I used to work at an amusement park that did that as well.
dougp··on USPS Estimates $230 Billion in Losses over Next 10 Years
I would buy the public service line if more then half of our mail didn't go straight into the trash. I am excited when I see a Fedex box on the door step. Not so much when I see a mail box full of junk addressed to current resident.
dougp··on Mushroom Life
Another cool one to try the spinner 3 in a row
dougp··on Patriot Act Renewed Without Any New Civil Liberties Protections
Maybe next year
dougp··on Segways meet resistance in Boston neighborhood
Crowds are actually what segways are best at. You can easily control your speed and turn in place. There is a reason mall cops use them rather then bikes.
dougp··on Has Rails jumped the shark?
The only extra "configuration" I have experienced with rails 3 is adding routes as I used to abuse the default routes. But yes they decoupled a lot of things but it's not like you have to require them through xml config files there is no change in set up. It still works as usual in the default configuration This is just link bait.
dougp··on The logic behind treating "sexting" teens as child pornographers
The best line "The message to minors: These photos can ruin your lives, kids. And just to prove it, we're going to ruin your lives."
dougp··on Ask HN: How did you get started in hacking/programming?
I got started when I learned you could program a TI 83
dougp··on Cooperative art game using Canvas
Worse case scenario you can always just go in and make every one of your pixels blue for your avatar and you are back where you were. But I agree I need like a flashing arrow pointing to you when you first load.
dougp··on Cooperative art game using Canvas
Thanks, Yeah I should have guessed that people would try and trap people. That seems to have worked out on its own as every wall near the start has been vaporized now.
dougp··on Cooperative art game using Canvas
You guys are totally trashing the place and I love the guy who is putting up fake walls.
dougp··on Cooperative art game using Canvas
The author here. The whole thing is written in Rails and hosted on Heroku which has been great. Canvas was surprisingly easy to work with coming from almost no javascript experience. Anyways let me know what you think. Thanks
dougp··on Ask HN: Check out my Canvas based multiplayer Maze
I see you guys running all over the place. Give me some feedback. Is drawing intuitive? Do you wish you could customize your character?
dougp··on I Really Hate Windows Sometimes
The automatic restart caused us no end of difficulties at my work. We were running long running data loading integration test scripts on windows boxes. Nothing worse then finding out that the script that was supposed to run over the weekend made it 8 hours then the machine rebooted to install updates.
dougp··on Ridiculous_fish: I Didn’t Order That, So Why Is It On My Bill, Episode 2
I love this type of analysis even thought I will probably never need to use it.
dougp··on Father of Green Revolution, Norman Borlaug, Dies
He uses tons of chemical fertilizer not pesticides big difference.
dougp··on Why Can’t She Walk to School?
It absolutely does.
dougp··on Why Can’t She Walk to School?
In my old school system it was against the rules to walk until high school. I vividly remember that they knew someone was riding their bike to school but couldn't figure out who so they confiscated the bike to see who came for it. My wife was waiting at her nephews bus stop to pick him up in the rain just yesterday (first week of school) the bus driver says I don't recognize you and has to call the school to see if she is on the list (she is) 30 minutes later they let her take her nephew and say "Can't be too careful!". It is mind boggling
dougp··on The Final Numbers on ‘Clunkers’
There is a slight stat game going on here that may or may not be intentional. The evidence is at #10 Ford Escape FWD. Trucks and SUV's come in a variety of transmission configurations and are actually counted as unique models for these stats.

Here is normalized list from earlier this month http://money.cnn.com/2009/08/07/autos/cash_for_clunkers_sale...

dougp··on Rock Band. Guitar Hero. Why They Are Doomed.
I disagree with this article on one point. In my experience the casual gamers always want to either sing or play drums and get easily frustrated on guitar. I think that rock bands appeal was that it is cooperative rather than who plays guitar better, dances better, or sings better like every rhythm game before it.
dougp··on What if Obama’s Health Care Plan’s Most Dangerous Enemy Was… Twitter?
Yes if the twittering masses just left the elite alone they will surely take care of us since we cannot take care of ourselves.
dougp··on XSS is not a feature
Yes the javascript on a separate site the he controls made http requests acting as the logged in user. It has nothing to do with being able to write html and javascript on a basecamp page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_request_forgery There are lots of sites that are vulnerable to this.
dougp··on XSS is not a feature
This looks like cross site request forgery to me. Not an xss issue which you notified 37 signals about.
