doug4hn··on How to get a job when you have no connections
I and my wife posted comments to the author's blog and the comments were deleted.
doug4hn··on Do the right thing, wait to get fired
Didn't Apple's Tim Cook say/recommend (to Duke MBAs) to "break the rules"?
doug4hn··on Google services down for some users
The server for http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en took too long to respond. It may be overloaded. Error code: 504
doug4hn··on Coffee vs. beer: which drink makes you more creative?
I found out about Yerba mate when looking for alternatives for coffee. BTW, I'm in the Southern US near Atlanta.
doug4hn··on Coffee vs. beer: which drink makes you more creative?
I've had some creative sessions w/ moderate Yerba mate consumption and haven't experienced the health issues some say it has.
doug4hn··on Linux Mint 15 “Olivia” released
Surprised I haven't seen it announced on Distrowatch or OSNews yet. Also have to admit I miss Live-CD images and minimal/network install images.
doug4hn··on Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" release planned for May 5
I downloaded a "pre-release" or beta of this recently and it was absolutely wonderful installing it compared to other recent Linux distros, including Fedora 18 (anaconda problems) even though Fedora allowed BTFS as root. Best Linux distro to get a minimal install and work from there.
doug4hn··on Why do people hate their jobs?
It pays to have experience with hostile work environments where harassment and threats is an issue before you start work. If you get stuck in one of these, try to learn from it and make the best of it. Had lots of friends who accepted a job where they were thrust immediately into the "hot seat". It's an aspect of a job that they don't really teach in school.
doug4hn··on If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers in Use Today
There's still some write-ups out there on the ultra low voltage unit and optional extended life battery that I bought with it.
doug4hn··on If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers in Use Today
Yeah, don't plan on upgrading. Really little more than a "glorified typewriter", but still very cute & light.
doug4hn··on If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers in Use Today
I've kept every single computer I've owned. Still thrilled with how well my Zeos 386 notebook (from the early 90's) works w/ Linux and that ultra thin Sharp PC-UM10 (from '01) that looks like a small MacBook Air and has an 8-hour battery life.
doug4hn··on The bomb that changed my life (2011)
When I was a kid, I experienced the explosion at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Definitely changed my life. Did anyone else here go thru that?
doug4hn··on GNOME or KDE? The Old Question Is New Today
LXDE & Enlightenment work well for me, even inside a virtual machine.
doug4hn··on Lessons Learned Working from Coffee Shops
Some are just stuck because they can't go elsewhere because of traffic jams and they don't want to go inside because it's too crowded or too many people waiting in line for coffee (or to go to bathroom).

Afraid I've never heard of anyone being accosted by officers about hanging out in the parking lot inside their car w/ their computer. Who is to say who's wifi they are using anyway (especially in a tight area where you have multiple choices for wifi)?

doug4hn··on Lessons Learned Working from Coffee Shops
I find that more people aren't even going into the coffee shop. They just park outside close enough to get a good wifi signal and relax in their car or van for hours on end.
doug4hn··on A Memory Comparison of Light Linux Desktops
Maybe these need to be updated?

doug4hn··on Ask HN: RHEL based or Debian based?
A quick search of Dice dot com reveals the following:

Red Hat - 991 RedHat - 769 CentOS - 383 RHEL - 350 Ubuntu - 250 Debian - 125

I love Ubuntu on my personal laptop, but RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora are what I've used at work most.

doug4hn··on Hot IT jobs: Why location matters
I recently moved from a metro area to the rural countryside and I really hate it. Miss those conveniences, nearby places to go hang out, social interaction, user group meetings/meetups, and conferences. Never felt more lonely when I moved out of the big city. Friends help some.

Getting out late at night is a pain (even in midsize cities). Places close too early and too many road blocks.

There's also (in some places) this "conservative, religious mentality" and risk avoidance (no fun) that's awful. At times, I feel like I'm working among 18th/19th century Amish or fundamentalists that think only witches/warlocks use computers! Thinking about moving out of there before I'm burned at the stake! ;)
