dotemacs··on Newly Declassified Documents: NATO Wouldn't Move Past East German Border
> Support for the Yugoslavia effort was mainly based on the genocide there and some people felt some obligation because of the holocaust and German war crimes in Yugoslavia during WW2.

The breakaway Yugoslav republics Croatia & Slovenia were recognised first by Vatican & then by Germany. At that point, no fighting has started. It could be argued that their recognition ignited the conflict.

A good comparison would be if Vatican & Germany recognised Catalonia and started to arm them.

> It's exactly the opposite with Russia.

Well, NATO bombed Yugoslavia, in 1999. under the made up charges of ethnic cleansing, but it was only after the NATO offensive started, that the people started to migrate, to avoid the conflict.

An interesting fact to consider is that the bunkers built during the Hitler's German occupation of Serbia were staffed by German soldiers, in their first military action after the WW2.

Comparisons with Russia are not applicable in this case.

Thanks, your project looks useful

Here are some questions:

Are you using Strongbox in production?

The backup is mentioned, but how exactly do you backup?

Thanks

dotemacs··on Wisconsin company to offer microchip implants to its employees
I remember talking to an ex colleague who worked for now no longer relevant mobile operator, about the setup his colleagues had who worked in Korea:

- they were required to have their "tags" on them all the time as it opened door and things like that...

- but they were also timed on when and how long their toilet breaks were. Or if they went to the canteen too early or stayed too long for their lunch. For all the "offences" their pay was docked.

Brilliant. Thank you
dotemacs··on Remacs – A community-driven port of Emacs to Rust
> This looks like a lot of work for what amounts to very little end-user benefit.

Oh, but how wrong you are.

At London Emacs meetup Wilfred gave a talk about his motivations for this work. One of the big and most obvious benefits is this:

while porting some feature to Rust, he discovered a bug in Emacs, fixed it and got given commit access for his work.

You can read the transcript of his presentation here:

dotemacs··on Kazakhstan spells out plans for alphabet swap
> Or, they can, simply make both official and let the people decide like we did in Serbia centuries ago.

Not true. It wasn't decided centuries ago. But it was done in 1954. in order to distance Yugoslav communists from Stalin's USSR. In fact it was done to placate the US. In fact this move by Kazakhstan, where they are courting the favour of the West, was done by Serbia 63 years ago.

> Most nationalists or people aligned with Russian views use Cyrillic here and others use Latin.

This sentence alone makes it painfully obvious of how things are in Serbia: little countries aren't allowed to have history and its citizens self respect.

Ivo Andric put it well: "Prolonged slavery and bad rule, can confuse and distort the understanding of a people so that the common sense and their judgement weaken and become twisted. Such disturbed people can no longer distinguish good from evil, but their own benefit from the obvious harm."

Interesting to see Amazon people writing these complaints on Google's services.

Also, what effect will this have on people using Amazon? Should we try to use Google cloud offering instead of AWS?

I guess with any service that offered super cheap costs, there was a place where something had to give...

dotemacs··on Kinesis Advantage 2
Here is "What's new" info:

1) Cherry ML mechanical function keys

Original Advantage: Mushy rubber function keys. Advantage2: You asked for it and we delivered. The function key row now features low-force Cherry ML mechanical key switches that offer a satisying, tactile key press plus unmatched reliability and durability.

2) Whopping 2 MB of onboard memory

Original Advantage: 2 KB of onboard memory (Advantage Pro had 4 KB). Advantage2: The Advantage2 has 2 MB of memory, as in megabytes, which is 1000x more memory than the standard Advantage. Now you have an enormous amount of space to record macros and build custom layouts.

3) Heavy duty macros & increased capacity

Original Advantage: Up to 48 “short” macros (28 characters or less) or 24 “long” macros (58 characters or less) Advantage2: Each custom layout built with the SmartSet engine can now support 100+ “heavy-duty” macros of more than 200+ characters in each. SmartSet allows you to create even more powerful macros through the direct editing process. Insert delays into macro playback of either 125ms or 500ms, or trigger different actions on the press and release of a given macro trigger.

4) View and edit layouts

Original Advantage: When you remapped a key or recorded a macro you had no easy way to track you changes or perform any updates. Advantage2: With SmartSet, all layouts are saved and stored as basic .txt files which can be opened with any text editing program on any operating systems. Open the text file and directly edit your remaps or macros. Even insert new actions using many standard USB hex codes.

5) Share and backup layouts

Original Advantage: There was no way to share or backup layouts. You had to keep a separate crib sheet if you ever wanted to rebuild your custom layout. Advantage2: Each layout is stored as a basic text file making them easy to save, backup or even share with a friend. The days of rebuilding your custom layout from scratch are over.

6) Status Report

Original Advantage: It was easy to forget which layout was active, which thumb key mode you were in and other keyboard settings. Advantage2: Thanks to the new Status Report feature, you can quickly “print-to-screen” a Status Report showing you basic information about the active layout include the number of key remaps and macros, and your thumb key mode.

7) Adjust macro playback speed

Original Advantage: All macros played back at one speed. Advantage2: Choose from 9 different macro playback speeds. Set the playback speed globally for all macros or set it individually for a specific macro to optimize performance. Slow playback down to 4.2 characters per second (“CPS”), or speed it up to a blazing fast 250 CPS- equivalent to typing 3,000 words per minute!

8) Hotkey layouts

Original Advantage: Only supported one custom layout. Advantage2: With the Advantage2, you can now create dozens of custom hotkey layouts for either QWERTY or Dvorak and access them with a simple 2-key combination: Program + the assigned hotkey.

9) Native Dvorak

Original Advantage: When you switched out of Dvorak you lost your settings. When you remapped keys in your Dvorak layout you did so in QWERTY. Advantage2: Dvorak is no longer a second-class citizen. Dvorak users get all the same functionality as QWERTY users, and each custom Dvorak layout is saved to the keyboard so it’s easy to move back-and-forth or share your keyboard. And when you’re remapping in Dvorak, you no longer have to translate from QWERTY.

10) Easy firmware upgrades

Original Advantage: Firmware was not upgradable. Advantage2: When you invest in an expensive keyboard, you expect it to last. Thanks to the SmartSet engine you can upgrade the firmware when new versions become available. Firmware updates take only seconds and don’t require opening up the keyboard or downloading a scary executable file (.exe) from the internet.

11) Kinesis Blue Home Row

Advantage2 features a more vibrant, modern home row accented in Kinesis Blue.

dotemacs··on Scaleway: Bare metal SSD ARM servers

They have only one OS available, Linux, (in various flavours), while the others are branded 'coming soon'. That alone doesn't inspire any confidence.

dotemacs··on Simplicity and Utility, or Why SOAP Lost
This. So true!

...it almost always seems to come down to guesswork.

Meanwhile, the vendor just exposes the WSDL and assumes
that's sufficient "documentation" for clients and you
don't need any examples or explanations or other info. I
find the best way to approach this is to open Soap UI and
start messing with settings until requests are accepted.
There's no point asking the vendor for documentation
because they probably don't know themselves.
Having just dealt SOAP API last week, I can relate to this so much. I'm glad that I'm not the only one feeling the pain here.
dotemacs··on Astral – Organize Your GitHub Stars with Ease
Great, I too wished I had time to create this at some point :)

Thank you for making it!

Maybe look into making the tag adding easier when you can. For example:

1. click on the repo

2. click on 'Edit tags'

it would be good if the focus immediately switched to the tag edit box without having to click on it to edit it

Also, README's not in the 'default' markdown mode don't render so well. For example if the README is in org-mode...

dotemacs··on Emacs, naked
Fair point.

But one of the issues with Marmalade is that anybody can fork your project (patch it or not) and just push it. With MELPA, they try to get the original authors to submit the projects. If you've got patches, they are pretty strict about it and encourage you to get them merged in the package rather than accepting a fork.

dotemacs··on Emacs, naked
Are you sure that MELPA has issues? I've been running with it since it started and one thing that I can say about it is that its been a joy to use. Hats off to milkypostman & sanityinc for maintaining it.

If you do have an issue, I suggest you open it on MELPA's GitHub issue page and I'm pretty confident that you'll get a quick response.

As for tweaking Emacs' config, yea, I have to admit, I've spent time on it too and things can always improve.

dotemacs··on OpenNote – an open web-based alternative to Microsoft OneNote and EverNote
Good, thanks.

As somebody who uses SimpleNote I welcome competition to this area. Primarily because I've pleaded with SimpleNote crew to let me have documentation to their latest API as I maintain the simplenote.el, Emacs frontend for it. Only to be consistently ignored.

Evernote already broke the access to their app via the existing Emacs mode.

So any app eats into this market is welcome. Thanks again.

dotemacs··on Top 15 Cheap, Safe and Friendly Countries | Kimeshan Naidoo
Shocked that Austria is even considered friendly. I know a bunch of people who live there an who have lived there and they unanimously agree that the country is extremely racist towards non native Austrians.

When I was there on a short visit, in central Vienna, I asked about five different people, in English, where a certain museum was. I was just ignored as if I did not even exist.

The sixth person did direct me to the museum, but they happened to be an American living in Vienna.

dotemacs··on Returning to Free Software: A Guide
I bought Samsung's 900X and installed FreeBSD on it. I could tweak it and get 4+ hours of play on it. But it involved tweaking with the config params a lot and worrying what I'm about to run, will it have enough power, what settings to turn on, what to disable.

So yes, I'd like to have a good laptop, with a long battery life that supports open source/free software OSs but I'd also like some convenience too.

dotemacs··on Ask HN: How did you move from a salaried job to contracting?
@dclaysmith:

"Be charitable with your time. Be willing to meet people for coffee and provide free advice. These sort of meetings often directly or indirectly turn into work."

This is so true.

In 'Smarter Selling' by Keith Dugdale & David Lambert, which is mostly aimed at sales people, I took away one nugget (I'm paraphrasing here):

"Don't position yourself on just trying to sell something to the customer, because, they might be pressured and they'll eventually buy it. But they'll wait until the end of the contract and then go to somebody else.

Instead position yourself as somebody who is helping them and give them a real solution. The relationships that you build that way will take longer, but they will be the ones that will last a long time, where the client will keep coming back to you."

When I thought about it, I was doing this anyway, this just made it obvious.
