And you could charge people 9.99 a month to use it...
dotcoma··on Ask HN: For non-hackers/nerds, why do you read HN?
Because tech shapes society. Because not every thread is only for SWEs. Because I used to work in the field (in mktg/biz dev). Because it’s a habit. Because I like the simplicity of this website. Because comments are, on average, better than on most of the web.
dotcoma··on Dear Microsoft, enough is enough
Does it count as Safari in stats? If it did, they’d have a 100% market share, wouldn’t they?
dotcoma··on Dear Microsoft, enough is enough
They need to get their browsers listed on AppStore, sure.
dotcoma··on Dear Microsoft, enough is enough
Really? I Never got a weird message from Apple about other browsers being bad or potentially dangerous, and I tried Vivaldi, DDG, Brave, Firefox, Firefox Focus, and I currently have DDG set as my main browser.

And of course I can delete Safari from my iphone if I wanted to.

I moved to Helium instead, but that nobody will pay is to be seen.

dotcoma··on Tulip mania: when a single flower was worth more than a house (2025)
Assuming I could not resell the Monet, which sounds strange, I would still prefer it over the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT, which is more likely to be hard or impossible to sell, and which is pure crap.
dotcoma··on Tulip mania: when a single flower was worth more than a house (2025)
I'm not sure, but I know I'd rather own a Monet than a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT ;)
dotcoma··on Meta asks users to pay for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook
No doubt.
dotcoma··on Meta asks users to pay for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook
A certain percentage of users will pay for sure, and so, sadly, this is a sure winner.

I wish they had become paid services for everybody. That would have been more fun to watch.

dotcoma··on Anthropic raises $65B in Series H funding at $965B post-money valuation
I don't see it as merely boxing out competitors or integrating with the OS.

People have been going to Google for a quarter of a century, and I imagine they will continue to do so.

As far as I am concerned, I moved to DDG in 2013 and never looked back, but I find Google AI intriguing.

dotcoma··on Anthropic raises $65B in Series H funding at $965B post-money valuation
You start with a 90% share in search, I guess.

Me, not a SWE, I have never even tried Claude

(and I am not sure I prefer ChatGPT over Google)

dotcoma··on Ask HN: When and why did you start believing in God?
I’m all for the truth, or even anything resembling the truth.

You can choose to study physics, or sociology, or how the human body works, or the mind, and how to fight diseases etc.

Questions bigger than that seem too big to me, but if trying to find an answer to those questions makes people feel good and/or live good lives, why not?

dotcoma··on Ask HN: When and why did you start believing in God?
I was told to when I was a toddler, but by the time I turned 12 or 13, I had outgrown the phase.
