dormento··on Anthropic Is Building Its Own Chip
Good, can they please make their own RAM as well and leave some for the little people?
dormento··on Ask HN: What if there was an 8th day of the week?
Agreed, though there's would be the inconvenience of having to update the Earth's rotation to take the new day length into account :P
dormento··on The Abandoned Fish Sauce Terrorizing a Small Canadian Town
Can't recommend enough! Max Miller's Tasting History is magical. It is not just a cooking show, i'd say it is 30% cooking, and 70% history. One of my favorite things on the internet.
dormento··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Yeah it was a shame all the deaths and human rights abuse happened as well, but hey we can't let that diminish the glory of the world cup /s
dormento··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
> after they flew Falklands Island banner in England player's faces

You certainly mean the Malvinas /s

dormento··on Show HN: What should the GUI for AI agents look like?
True, "strange terminal commands" gave me such a visceral reaction. "Its GUIs that are strange, with their strange buttons in different shapes and forms".

dormento··on 'My life's screwed': Korean investors stress out after AI bubble bursts
Ah, the gentlemanly 6 pool <3

But seriously, betting on stocks is not an "investment". This is like the first thing you gotta learn in order to not get gently-caressed over by the market. My rule of thumb: if it's not insured somehow, its just speculation (which can be profitable, but never an "investment").

dormento··on RFC 8890 – The Internet is for End Users (2020)
Cloudflare spreads everywhere and kills the drive to do nice things. It is akin to a disease.

The question is, what is the alternative to cloudflare? We've tried (to various degrees) user id, micropayments, device attestation... I'm not hopeful we can actually solve this. Maybe if there was a neutral, "NGO-like" cloudflare of some sort?

dormento··on Our position on open-weights models
Since the current wave of "politicians", apologizing for one's mistakes is considered "woke" and "unmanly".
dormento··on Our position on open-weights models
If these last few years have taught us anything is that what was once considered "implausible" has certainly changed. I'll leave it at that.
dormento··on Our position on open-weights models
Ignoring the obvious joke about "random incidents" in schools regularly in America, is it not the case that the country with the most capacity to retaliate anywhere in the world would not be "demoralized"? I see the possibility that the effect of such terrorism might be different from place to place.
dormento··on Our position on open-weights models
There was a _school_ in thee exact location the school was in. Besides, when the expectation was to leave most of target selection to automated systems, one could arguably say that there was intentional targeting, due to the lack of human oversight.

"But the AI did it!" -- never did, never will, it cannot have agency, AGI is a lie, etc etc.

dormento··on Our position on open-weights models
My very western country as well.

dormento··on Stop Killing the Internet: No Digital ID and No Age Verification
"you guys" assumes all people defending this """idea""" (i'm being far too charitable here...) are actual europeans and not a botfarm.

(Cue the twitter profile origin country flag thing).

dormento··on Goodbye POSIX, Hello Tea Room: Inside MinervaOS Architecture
Please, at least include an option for a more legible monospace font. I couldn't follow what I think would've been an interesting article because of it.
dormento··on Ask HN: Why is every company encorporating AI everywhere?
"AI" is like "the cloud", in the sense that the average CEO cannot articulate exactly what it is, but it is essential for any future scenarios they can imagine. They don't know exactly how, but "isn't it obvious?"
dormento··on Apple Will 'Watch Everything Burn' When the AI Bubble Bursts
In other words, the AGI hype kinda depends on AGI never being achieved. Billionaires don't want the worlds fundamental problems solved overnight for a simple reason: there's no money in that.
dormento··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
When you think about it, we're only "useful" to billionaires because we have something that they want, and that something is not called "work". Work is just that thing that people must figure out before they can generate wealth. Money is the goal, work is just something in the way.

As most human tasks are automated away, the bargaining power of the (figurative) 99.9% of people who were actually producing wealth by doing actual work will converge towards zero.

I wish I had something positive to share, but if you don not happen to be a billionaire, then the future looks grim.

dormento··on Ask: Why does everything Microsoft create lately feel fragile and half-baked?
That is correct. Those pesky testers kept finding bugs and sending modules back to rework, when they could have been letting the users find those bugs by themselves on the cheap. /s
dormento··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Of course, the _actual_ response to that should be to make the AI companies somehow liable for the massive disruption they caused (and still cause).

But alas, we can't have nice things.

dormento··on OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack
To be fair, anthropic models, when asked in chinese, also used to introduce themselves as deepseek sometimes. This is a limitation of the technology.
dormento··on Setting up your spare Mac for Claude Code to control, a step-by-step guide
From my experience it _seems_ to be the opposite, no?

HN skews heavily toward the SF signature vc-hype tech-driven-dev style, always chasing the new thing, sometimes to the detriment of everything else.

Even if this style of development was a clear improvement over the classic "typing things with hands" style, the rest of the world would take a while to catch on.

dormento··on Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled
> they can plausibly deny they set out to track you across the web using their OS

Only the first time this happens, before it becomes clear to everyone that such mechanism can be used for tracking. After that... well I have this bridge I've been meaning to sell.

dormento··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is software buggier across the board?
INCREDIBLY buggier, no comparison.

QA got it so bad in the current LLM-fueled carnival of stupid. Also, what would be categorized in the times of yore as a "lamer" has incredible free tools at their disposal, so vulnerabilities are a lot more common. Add to that the fact that every goddamn thing is connected to the internet and you got a recipe for disaster.

Even if you only hit 1/100 times... if you can shot 10000 times, you're still in the green.

dormento··on Chatto is now open source
Couldn't help but smile because "chato" in portuguese means "boring", and this seems very easy to set up and use.

Here's to more boring software! :)

dormento··on LineageOS Statistics
I've installed it plenty, and its always been on "unsupported" hardware.

There's a big world out there.
