dorkrawk··on Show HN: Hacker News, without AI
For Hacker News without AI, can I suggest the domain of news.ycombntor.com ?
dorkrawk··on AI coding is gambling
I like making pizza ( https://dinosaurseateverybody.com/blog/making-pizza )...
dorkrawk··on Fine, I'll Do It Myself
I recently moved all my small project sites over to a self-hosted solution using Coolify. It was pretty easy and really rewarding!

dorkrawk··on Random Thoughts About AI
Just what the world needs, another software engineer pontificating about AI!
dorkrawk··on Just Use a Laptop
It's working pretty well. I certainly use my phone for some things, especially if I'm away from the house. But I've just set habits that if I'm doing certain things (writing more than a sentence or two, buying things online, etc.) I just default to a laptop.

Having a microwave doesn't force me to eat TV dinners for every meal. But sometimes it's convenient to just microwave food. Just not all the time.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

dorkrawk··on Just Use a Laptop
I don't think avoiding phone usage completely is needed, just a shift in mentality towards favoring "I'll sit down and work on this when I get home" over pulling out your phone to take care of things when you first think of them.
dorkrawk··on Comprehension debt: A ticking time bomb of LLM-generated code
Downloading music off the internet is just the next logical step after taping songs off the radio. Cassette tapes didn't really affect the music industry, so I wouldn't worry about this whole Napster thing.
dorkrawk··on How HubSpot scaled AI adoption
I think this became this book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26030703-disrupted right?
dorkrawk··on Postwave: An opinionated flat-file based based blog engine in Ruby
I wanted to a way to write posts in Markdown and then display them dynamically in my site, so I built something to scratch my itch.
dorkrawk··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings

dorkrawk··on A.I. Is Homogenizing Our Thoughts
Mass media homogenizes our input (which influences our output). If we want to think about how AI might be different we should consider how it might directly homogenize our output.
dorkrawk··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I'm working on a little flat file based blogging tool called Postwave ( https://github.com/dorkrawk/postwave ) and using it to power a blog with career advice for software engineers called Don't Break Prod ( https://dontbreakprod.com/ ). Because the world needs more blogging tools and advice. Or maybe it just scratches my itch and it's fun to build.
dorkrawk··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
https://github.com/dorkrawk/postwave I have a little blogging engine that I wrote to scratch my own itch called Postwave. You write everything as flat files but you can interact with everything dynamically through a client library. It works for what I want to use it for.
dorkrawk··on What is wrong with TOML? (2019)
Not really related to the article, but I always thought it was kind of quaint that TOML is "Tom's Obvious Minimal Language" (made by Tom Preston-Werner, one of the founders of GitHub).
dorkrawk··on Kemal: Fast, Effective, Simple Web Framework for Crystal
Huh. I guess I always thought the hat logo was a nod to Sinatra ( https://sinatrarb.com/ ), given Crystals relationship with Ruby.
dorkrawk··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
Also, it's not quite true. GitHub offers free private repos for individuals now: https://github.com/pricing
dorkrawk··on Launch HN: Spinach.io (YC W22) – Better daily standups
Nobody likes spinach but you eat it because it's good for you. Interpret that as you will for standups...
dorkrawk··on Dijo: A terminal-based habit tracker written in Rust
Wow, I tried to solve a similar problem in a similar way (command line based progress tracker) with a small personal project called Trackstar: https://github.com/dorkrawk/trackstar but this is SO much nicer!
dorkrawk··on The primary issues that make frameworks flawed
When's the last time you saw a milk-man?
dorkrawk··on In College and Hiding from Scary Ideas
"What will they do when they hear opinions they’ve learned to shrink from? If they want to change the world, how will they learn to persuade people to join them?"

This seems like an important quote for those who are sad/disappointed/angry about the US election results.

dorkrawk··on Apple’s declining software quality
What are some companies, shipping consumer software of comparable complexity to Apple, who ship exemplary high quality software? How are they doing it?
dorkrawk··on A Ruby gem for genetic algorithms
Hey, this is my library! Thanks for submitting it. Let me know if you have any questions.
dorkrawk··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
I think drivers are discouraged from taking cash because companies like Lyft don't want people to assume drivers are carrying lots of cash, for safety reasons.
dorkrawk··on The Post-YC Slump
A lot of people can't run a 4:45 mile, but if you expect to be competitive at a world class level in a marathon, you'd better be able to hold that pace for 26.2 miles.
dorkrawk··on GitHub Raises $250M at $2B Valuation
So, when you're looking to not pay for something to head to a BitBucket, but if someone else is footing the bill (like a company with a real budget for more than $7/month) you'd prefer GitHub? Sounds like a win-win for GitHub.
dorkrawk··on Ask HN: What is the most crucial knowledge a non-technical founder should have?
"I know bridges can be built out of metal or wood! I'll just hire a carpenter and let them figure it out..."
dorkrawk··on Artoo: Ruby on Robots
How actively is this being maintained? I noticed that the last commits were a few months ago. Maybe it's in a pretty stable place and doesn't need much work these days, but I like seeing Ruby used for more than just Rails so I'd love to see this stick around.
dorkrawk··on Foobar
I had the "You speak our language..." message pop up while searching for some Python info and send me to Foobar a few days ago. So far I've just done one of the challenges. I'm sure it's a recruiting thing, but they seem like fun puzzles and it's obviously not the only way to get a job with Google, so good for them for building something fun.
dorkrawk··on Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say
Yes, thank you. I think that lumping all majors at all colleges together and encouraging people to "just go to college" is a huge problem. College is a weird mix of academic pursuit and vocational training. Sometimes those things overlap sometimes not and understanding that balance is important. Not all investments in higher education are the same and not understanding what sort of investment you can make given your current financial situation is causing a lot of people to pick up a lot of bad debt.
