dorfsmay··on Dell is posting unsigned updates to their website which fail to install
It's definitely making me reconsider Dell for my next laptops, unless Framework starts commiting to lvfs more.

I miss the days where you could boot FreeDOS and downloading a .exe to update your firmware on about any hardware.

What? I've been upgrading my laptops with fwupdmgr for years without any issue.

dorfsmay··on I Had $100k in Debt So I Moved into My Car
Staying at your parents while studying means a local university which one might not be able to get in, or it could a worse choice.

Not all parents can afford to help their kids with their debts, we don't know details about their financial situation.

> Canada has a worse debt-to-income ratio than any other G7 country, with a total consumer debt of $2.5 trillion. That’s more than Canada’s GDP.

> Higher education was supposed to be an investment in my future. But now students like me are stuck paying off their debts over years or even decades. This is largely due to the mismatch between the high cost of education and low, stagnating starting wages

Meanwhile political campaigns at both provincial and federal levels are mostly ad hominem attacks and fear mongering ("it'll be the end of the world with the other guy").

dorfsmay··on Poll: Do you use browser profiles?
On top of separating google login, keeping Facebook completely separated from rest etc... Firefox profiles let me have a bunch of extensions for development (eg: React dev tool) that tend to eat memory and slow down every day browsing.

dorfsmay··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
My point about AF447 was:

  - even with redundancy, there can be enough failures that the computer no longer has enough information to make the right decision, one thing humans seem to be good at.

  - people who had been trained in stall recognition and recovery, but probably had not kept proficient at it (unlike pilot of slow airplanes like GA and glider pilots) failed to recognize it (only 1 of the 3 pilot did) and did not recover from it.
dorfsmay··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
A lot of scientists and journalists have not moved to other platforms. I tried to use instagram instead but the algorithmic injection of content and a terrible UI make it unusable for me.

I find using Twitter in the "following" mode, as opposed to the default "for you", I get a lot of value content and almost no noise.

dorfsmay··on Launch HN: Airhart Aeronautics (YC S22) – A modern personal airplane
How do you make it easy to stay proficient? For example you say your plane will never stall, will your pilots train stall recognition and recovery regularly? How will prevent something like what happened to AF447?

dorfsmay··on Terence Tao on proof checkers and AI programs
Thanks.

There's also https://github.com/jrh13/hol-light which I think is still maintained (just learned about it in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvMjgKcZDec from this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40619482)

dorfsmay··on Terence Tao on proof checkers and AI programs
I know nothing, I am a complete beginner when it comes to formal methods. From reading about it, it seems that Isabelle/HOL is the best when it comes to automation which apparently is something you really want. It might be easier to learn (controversial, some say Lean is easier). It's been used to prove some software (including sel4 and a version of java), Apple and AWS are using it (but then I know AWS uses, or used, TLA+).

At the end of the day, I didn't want to spend more time reading about it then learning two of them (trying one and potentially switch later). The more you read about it, the more options open up (SPARK, TLA+, COQ, etc...).

I do find it ironic to read this article today given that I made that decision yesterday!

I just spent hours looking at formal methods and had decided to learn Isabelle/HOL, then this article !

dorfsmay··on The efficacy of duct tape vs. cryotherapy in the treatment of the common wart (2002)
I heard potato (and you had to burry the part you didn't use) and garlic (with no magical ritual), and they both worked well.

Back when the duct tape study came out, one theory was that anything irritating the area enough to get the immune system to kick in would work.

For people who haven't ready the article, duct tape worked twice as well as cryothérapie.

dorfsmay··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
A big issue is FOMO, and the paradox of choice.

If only few potential partners are available, you will look for the best match and to settle down quickly. They might be average in look and intelligence, but you'll be happy to having found them.

If you have a lot of money, can travel, and have access to a lot of beautiful potential partners, you'll always wonder if the next one could be better looking and more intelligent, and will have a hard time to settle.

Even though Canadian citizenship first appeared in 1947, athletes were recognised as Canadian as soon as the country was created in 1867.

The first Canadians to win a anything were the "Paris crew" who won a regatta days after the constitution. Canada started to be represented in the Olympic Games in 1900.

dorfsmay··on Takeaways from the Jane Street bond prospectus
Most people prefer habits/conventions over logic.

That makes sense given the shift to electronic records that has happened in the last few years, but obviously not a factorwith this incident.

Credit cards can still use imprinter (from what I'm able to google but I haven't seen one in years), but debit transactions such as Interac need a connection.

Are there provinces with electronic prescriptions? I always get a piece of paper (in Alberta).

I've had cases where the pharmacy (indeed London Drugs) phoned the doctor to ask them to fax a renewal.
