doorty··on Why Free Markets Make Fools of Us
How will he "prosper"? You mean he will have a "job" because he's preventing deception.
doorty··on Why Free Markets Make Fools of Us
"If a company can make money by deceiving or manipulating people, someone is going to create such a company, and it will prosper (unless the law regulates it). And if it prospers, companies that do not deceive or manipulate people may well be at a competitive disadvantage."

EDIT: I was just quoting the article for discussion purposes. There's no reason to down vote.

doorty··on The student who discovered water on Mars says it was a 'lucky accident'
Yea, seems to be going in the opposite direction. Pop culture like tv shows Big Bang Theory and Silicon Valley are showing that it's actually cool to be geeky or into tech and startups.
doorty··on Ask HN: What are your opinions and experiences coding on a 13“ or 15” laptop?
I went from a Macbook Pro 15" (pre-retina) to a 2015 Macbook Pro 13" Retina (with max resolution: 1680x1050), and I haven't been hindered at all.

I code on it daily. I did get some upgrades like the 16GB RAM.

doorty··on Dmail – self-destructing email chrome extension
At first I thought it might be by turning the email into an image, but when I scrolled down and saw the encryption part I realized they probably do some sort of token validation with their server to decide whether to decrypt the message.
doorty··on Safari isn’t the problem, but the lack of browser choice in iOS is
The problem is that Apple doesn't provide access to lower level APIs that would allow other browser engines to compete on performance and increased functionality. They can only compete on UI. This lack of competition is holding back the potential of the mobile web.
doorty··on Craigslist, 3taps settle scraping/antitrust suits with $1M donation to EFF
How does one go about upsetting this giant in the marketplace? Everyone wants a better craigslist, but it's useless if they don't have the content.

doorty··on Improving Internet access in the developing world through zero rating [pdf]
Zero-rating (also called toll-free data or sponsored data) is the practice of mobile network operators (MNO) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) to not charge end customers for a well defined volume of data by specific applications or internet services via the MNO's mobile network in limited or metered data plans and tariffs.[1] it allows customers to use data services like video streaming, which otherwise might result in significant charges depending on their data plans and volume caps. This has especially become an option to market 4G networks, but has also been used in the past for SMS or other content services.

...Or you could hire remote workers! I'm currently living in SF, but will be moving because of my girlfriend's new job. I'm finding it very hard to find remote roles despite the job shortage.

Currently seeking web development gigs in SF, with the ability to work offsite/remote for months at time.

I have a range of skills and evolving interests that center around developing compelling products that leverage new technology.

I've been creating and designing websites for 15 years. Most recently, since the release of the iPhone, I have been focusing on mobile: Initially, as an iPhone (iOS) developer and then returning to web, particularly mobile web design. Over the last three years, I've created various interactive iPad and desktop web apps for clients at a healthcare agency. On the side, I've started several companies in the web and mobile space (see Vendee and SeniorServe) doing the entire design and full-stack web development with mobile apps. Though, I haven't had long-term success with my side projects, understanding what makes a business successful is a skill I try to continue to develop. As far as design skills, I have worked in UI/UX in industry, and I have a Masters in Computer Science with a focus on the relationship known as Human-Computer Interaction. Rather than simply a software engineer, I consider myself a well-rounded developer with many skills to bring to the table, and I'd like to find an organization that leverages this desire and broad skill set.

Recruiters: I'm interested in creative companies that investigate and implement solutions to complex problems. Some of my areas of interest include wearables/fashion, travel, fitness/wellness, mobile, augmented reality, and dog friendly work places. Particularly interested in offsite/remote positions.

doorty··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
Same here. This hits close to home for me--literally, my girlfriend lives right there, she broke her elbow on a bike, and we go to that bar sometimes. We could of very easily been in that same situation. I'm a developer and happy to help.
doorty··on How I Ended Up In Solitary After Calling 911 For Help
My girlfriend lives right there. We go to that bar sometimes. She recently broke her elbow on a bike accident. We would of called 911 in the same situation. This could of easily been me and her. Wow. What can I do!?
doorty··on Streetpong [video]
This also gives pedestrians a fun alternative to jay walking.
doorty··on Asana’s Justin Rosenstein on the One Quality Every Startup Needs to Survive
I can relate to this as a developer. At my agency, the technical team is often brought in later-on in designing a solution, and I find myself not having any base understanding of the project--like why and for who is this being developed. As a result, it's hard to have motivation to work on a project when you lack the why's of what you're doing.
doorty··on “Vacations are for the weak”

doorty··on Show HN: I mapped US medical prices. Save thousands by driving a few miles
Great first step. And pretty soon we'll have quality of care reviews--from patient questionnaires thanks to ACA/Obama Care.
doorty··on John Cleese on creative thinking
Great lecture. I'm curious to know what companies/organizations actually allow this kind of flexibility--outside of the entertainment industry.
doorty··on Luna delivers your packages when you're home for the night
I like the idea. Though the $6.99/package is more than I'm wiling to spend. I order most of my stuff online and packages delivered to my apartment during the day will be stolen. I currently have to get all my packages delivered to work, but for some people that may not be an option.
doorty··on Penny Arcade’s Insultingly Horrible Job
I like the premise. But as a developer who recently walked out Friday night from doing any more work, another developer was there to pick up my work. We have to change developers (and employers) mindset in order to make a change in the industry. Aside, the developer was upset at me for walking out--not the employer.
doorty··on Brazilian government to ditch Microsoft in favour of bespoke email system
This is great. If service providers lose business because of cooperation with the NSA, then it's just a matter of time until those service providers have a compelling reason (Capitalism) that Congress, etc. can get behind.
doorty··on I wrote a book called Winning Isn't Normal

doorty··on Silk Road 2.0: A concept of a distributed anonymous marketplace

doorty··on One cost engineers and product managers don't consider
In my experience, any interface that does not directly conform to the underlying technology is going to increase the amount of work (aka complexity). And typically, the reason why one interface is simpler than the other is because instead of conforming to the environment/language, the engineer had to code another way to do it.
doorty··on Ask HN: How do you get a “PhD required” job without a PhD?
You could try to get published or get similar field-specific attention by making some advancement in the field.
doorty··on Show HN: Corral Rides - All your SF transportation options in one place
First of all, this is great. I'll definitely be using it on a regular basis for public transit and 'taxi' rides. Second, I love that you have bike directions too. BUT, the bike directions seem to be car directions when you hit the link to google maps. Please explain...
doorty··on Leaping Brain's "Virtually Uncrackable" DRM is just an XOR with "RANDOM_STRING"
The player decrypts the file before it is played and then encrypts again when it is finished, so if you grab the file while it is being used by the player then it will be decrypted.
doorty··on Facebook Pages: Why I don’t like Nest thermostat or anything else anymore
Seems pretty simple to me. Put one of those info banners at the top of everyone's Facebook feed (like they did to say "I voted" during the election) that gives you the option of either opting-in to ads (and ads to friends) or paying a fee to use Facebook.
