doorty··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free (2019)
Same story every year around tax filing time but nothing changes.
doorty··on Amazon’s Ring now reportedly partners with 2k US police and fire departments
Great. You can share your security footage with your neighbors on Ring, but when I see footage in my neighborhood I always hope local law enforcement is also informed.
doorty··on Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic
I've become more disillusioned with search results over the years. In the earlier days of the web, It used to be you'd fine useful answers from thoughtful people. Now you find long winded SEO articles filled with adverts. I mean 10 pages of content for a simple recipe.
doorty··on iOS 14 will let you change your default email and web browser apps
And Maps? And Calendar?

doorty··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring
Yes, it's the reason I'm not currently employed in the software industry. After a decade of being a professional developer, I decided to start building physical things and learning other maker skill sets. Whenever I need some extra income I start looking at software jobs, but I'm not able to think clearly during these sort of test situations, and they don't usually go well. I've built so many things from software products and businesses from scratch and could do so again, but it just makes me bitter to even subject myself to this initiation. I would be much happier (and companies would have more diverse candidates) if a resume and past experience did the talking like other professions.

Me. It's hard to find attractive shoes, especially dress shoes with a barefoot feel.

doorty··on The myth of the 'agricultural revolution'
I'm not buying this guy's long-winded "debunk." I think the book Sapiens does a better job at discussing the potential theories and the evidence to back it up.
doorty··on INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY AND ITS FUTURE
Yea, he lacks compassion for human life. He also has a crazy idea that we wipe out advanced technology and civilization to start over. But it's not all twaddle. He has a logical argument that large-scale organizational technological progress leads to an inevitable dystopian future, and I would actually like to hear more discussion on that topic.
doorty··on Cities with Uber Have Lower Rates of Ambulance Usage
They (uber/lyft) work well for my dog emergencies too.
doorty··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to learn Product Design?
Cool site, but why are they showing ideas with negative (ineffective) results?
doorty··on Invisible unicorns: Big companies that started with little or no money
TOMS Shoes is another bootstrapped company, though the founder had another company at the time to help the initial funding.

doorty··on Jeff Bezos’ Annual Letter
But you also want the lowest price?

Multiple sellers compete on a product page to sell you the product by being the seller in the "buy "box"--the seller with the lowest price.

The alternative solution would be to only allow the product owner or licensed seller to sell the product, but that would require a LOT of manual labor for verification. But they will do this for big, important brands.

doorty··on Navdy’s Heads-Up Display for your car starts shipping for $799
I thought it would be much bigger and projected onto the glass. Maybe my physics is off, but this form factor doesn't look that impressive.

doorty··on Bitcoin Sinks After Hackers Steal $65M from Exchange
What I learned from the video: Ninety percent of Bitcoin is traded in Chinese currency. Because most of the trading is in China, the impact of the hackers is minimized and the value is stabilizing after dropping twenty percent.

Side note: If college education was "free," it might encourage faster re-skilling and more "profitable" to society.

doorty··on Top developers can have a life outside coding
I used to code 24/7, and have "startup" side projects back in college, but 8 years later, and I like having a life outside of work. It also makes me fresher and more motivated when I come to work.
