donttrack··on 1976 letter from Silicon Valley exec calls Steve Jobs 'flaky' and a 'joker'
Exactly this sort of thing is something to watch out for with sociopaths or whatever the personality classification is called for this type of person.

The reason they do this is to shake you up and monitor your reaction. I don’t think they know why they do it exactly - it’s just a button they found they can press and they happen to have a gift that enables them to parse the response and from that response extrapolate which kind of abuse they can subject you to to make you dance.

I don’t know what the approproate response to the question would be other than a straightforward dry yes or no without lifting an eyebrow, but that would probably be hard without some sort of training as the questions come out of the blue and even the smallest discomfort you might feel will be picked up by the person.

Wouldn’t this be super easy to filter out with some kind of ML scheme?
donttrack··on Ask HN: Which VPN?
Express VPN if you don’t want to bother with setting up your own server.

If you want to setup your own server, then Streisand.

I used both and they work well. Using ExpressVPN right now in China.

donttrack··on 1976 letter from Silicon Valley exec calls Steve Jobs 'flaky' and a 'joker'
I used to work for someone who thought he was the new Steve Jobs.

If you can see through the lies and manipulation tactics it can work out but some people will not get out alive if they can’t adapt.

One thing I noticed was that rude language or sexual references were kind of used as a calibration technique to try to gauge people. I am sure he did this and many other little subtle tricks unconsciously as he wasn’t really that clever. Manipulating people was his talent so to speak and he seemed to enjoy to have a little puppet theater around where he could play with people as he pleased.

donttrack··on Binary SMS – The old backdoor to your new thing
I wonder why we haven't seen more exploits targeting SMS PDU mode. Is it the barrier for script kiddies just too high? You would probably need a network tester of some kind to properly try to find exploits.

I used to work for a big mobile phone manufacturer and once in a while we would get "secret" fixes to merge into the source. The commit message would be something unrelated and the builds would be pushed silently without much fanfare.

I was in charge for the merging, which is how I know this. Some of those fixes were for SMS PDU mode or related to stuff happening when PDUs were received. Not sure how phones handle these messages today, but I assume they follow spec, which means there are certain SMS PDUs which will be reacted on silently in the background (stuff in the PDU body is parsed and applications launched if necessary).

I should try to get an old R&S tester from eBay maybe. Could be fun to try to explore this area. Could be a nice security business niche to get into.

donttrack··on Ask HN: Can Freelance be free?
I found a good one who has contacts with some big companies. Usually the contracts are between 3 months and 1 year. I worked with them on and off since 2006.

But I agree. It’s a crowded market. I stopped answering people who contact me on LinkedIn - usually they can’t help me.

I would say this is the most effective way for me to get jobs since I don’t have a sales department to sell my services to big companies. I kind of out sourced the sales part, you could say.

donttrack··on Emissions of banned, ozone-depleting chemical CFC-11 have climbed 25% since 2012
How big a factory would you need to do this? I mean that sounds like some pretty low hanging fruit right there for the evil scientists out there, who wants to destroy human kind.
donttrack··on Ask HN: Can Freelance be free?
I don’t use any of those sites and I do freelancing via brokers mainly.
donttrack··on I Got Catfished by a Candidate
Me neither. Never was a problem for me.
donttrack··on Are My Friends Really My Friends?
Adolf Hitler said the same thing.
donttrack··on 'I'm sad that I didn't have sex until I was 37'
Yes it’s ridiculous. Stop this nonsense
donttrack··on 'I'm sad that I didn't have sex until I was 37'
Totally agree. I am sick and tired of being judged by people - especially western women - who thinks I am exploiting some young Asian woman. It makes me quite angry sometimes - they don’t know anything about us or how we live.
donttrack··on 'I'm sad that I didn't have sex until I was 37'
It’s funny how women always consider it exploitative when men “pick up” an Asian woman. I met my wife in a Walmart in China and we are quite happy together.

My friend is married to a Philippine woman. She worked at Apple and is quite well educated. Even is she wasn’t - I don’t know what the problem is.

donttrack··on Major depression on the rise among everyone, new data shows
I think it’s about a sense of freedom. Everything we do is monitored now. Look at a country like Denmark, where everyone is supposed to be happy. The level of surveillance for the sake of bettering society is at DDR level spy operations (just with letter steaming rooms replaced by Mongo databases etc and a consensus that if you don’t do anything wrong you don’t have anything to fear).
donttrack··on Librem 5 design report
Most of the time the touch and display is delivered as one module (similar to the iPhone where the whole front is one module) The front would probably need to be customized so it fits their design and they would probably need a flex designed also so it fits with their board design... maybe they are designing their board around an off the shelf display module? It’s usually a puzzle - not easy
donttrack··on Librem 5 design report
I am a bit sceptical. What kind of quantities are they shipping? I can’t imagine it will be hundreds of thousands. Even at quantities like 50.000 it seems to me it would be very difficult to source a custom designed screen/touch at a reasonable price. At 50.000 it would probably even be difficult to find someone even considering delivering the order
donttrack··on Young Chinese are sick of working long hours
I worked in China for 5 years. Our suppliers would sometimes work their software engineers so hard, that their wives would come in crying in the office at night because they never saw their husbands.

I was there to witness it because I also worked the same hours. I am a stupid man, who believes in people who build hot dog apps apparently.

donttrack··on Why Is It Hard to Make Friends Over 30? (2012)
I find it interesting that we are trying to quantify friendship and understand it with distribution charts like in that blog post. Like it is some kind of lost art.
donttrack··on Why Is It Hard to Make Friends Over 30? (2012)
When I visit my wifes family in (very) rural China, it kind of reminds me how we used to socially interact back when I was young 20 years ago. People would just pop by back then and sit in my couch for an hour or two, have a talk, watch some TV and get a snack and tea for no particular reason other than they just wanted to come by and it was okay. Everyone is always busy doing something today and everything has to be planned and just popping by feels weird and rude now..

Its funny how people had time to do something like standing in line at the post office to pay their bills back then, but they still managed to spend and hour or two to just be with a friend for no special reason. Maybe it was just a necessity back then without the phones and all and nobody actually really liked to spend time with friends and family. Seems like friendship has been automated somehow today to make it more efficient. I bet that in 1000 years long after human kind has disappeared, there will be friends sending each other automated birthday greetings in one of those solar powered data centers somewhere in Finland.

donttrack··on Origins of the finger command (1990)
Its funny. I actually recently pulled out the Finger RFC to try to reimagine how it could be adapted to the world of today.
donttrack··on Fuck You Startup World (2016)
Could people then please just stop commenting on people who don't drink. I stopped drinking and to be honest, it is a pain in the ass to listen to lame comments from people trying to be funny.

donttrack··on Over 30? Too Old for Tech Jobs in China
You cant make 40 year olds slave away all night to build your stupid hotdog app, which supposedly is going to make you all millionaires. That's the problem...
donttrack··on I switched from iPhone to the Pixel 2: One-week report
I used to make Android phones and I stopped using our own product after having been a hardcore Android user from the beginning. Had the first Android device that came out, rooted and rooted and rooted after that and built lots of apps for various companies until I got into building the actual OS.

The reason I stopped using our Android product at that time was because of the spyware. I even built a nice backend to host, browse and manage the so called telemetry we collected. Now I dont use Android because Google and I simply don't trust any Android vendor.

I miss an alternative to iPhone...

I am mostly just fascinated by people able to stream their coding. I think most of my stream would consist of googling stuff and procrastinating on hacker news and tabloids
donttrack··on Ask HN: Has anyone made a GDPR graveyard?
I agree. It seems like people are mostly just looking for a reason to whine about the EU.

There are lots of good reasons to whine about EU. I think the GDPR is not one of them.

donttrack··on An API Journey: From Idea to Deployment the Agile Way
They might as well have chosen to journey to an application, that print "Hello World" on the screen, but it would probably have been too obvious a marketing piece.
