dontknowwhyihn··on The Invention of a Neighborhood
Prepare to be downvoted to oblivion. HN is a leftist echo chamber. If you question vaccines, climate change, systemic racism, or the trans ideology, your voice will not be heard.

I’m probably shadow banned already.

dontknowwhyihn··on Modernity has made us allergic
You said it better than I could have. Amazing how no one will consider how overstimulating the immune system might create autoimmune disorders.
dontknowwhyihn··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
Have you not noticed the complete disregard the United States has for its citizens?
dontknowwhyihn··on Schizophrenia drugs may have been off target for decades, study finds
Don’t people still talk about “low seratonin levels?” I always found it suspect that we say someone’s levels are low without actually measuring them.
dontknowwhyihn··on Legions of DEF CON hackers will attack generative AI models
I discovered that Midjourney can’t generate a question mark, and if you use the /describe command and give it a picture of a question mark, it hallucinates.
dontknowwhyihn··on We need scientific dissidents
Australia became a full on prison colony. They didn’t contain covid, they imprisoned their entire population.
dontknowwhyihn··on Horrifying numbers of Americans will not make it to old age
And someone who is free can choose to be as cautious as they please. They just can’t force their choices on everyone else.
dontknowwhyihn··on Cops still take more stuff from people than burglars do (2021)
Losses are not fully tax deductible.
dontknowwhyihn··on Software engineers hate code
“What happens once will never happen again. What happens twice will surely happen a third time.”
dontknowwhyihn··on Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting Instagram account, Meta says
This looks like it’s purely about gaming signup metrics for Threads. Make it easy to try, create a huge disincentive to cancel, and suddenly you have a wildly successful, “sticky” app.
dontknowwhyihn··on 'Incredibly noticeable': alcohol ban cut family violence, crime in Alice Springs
I’ve been to Alice Springs. It’s basically a mall and a trailer park in the middle of the desert. If I lived there, I’d be an alcoholic too.
dontknowwhyihn··on Eyewitness Accounts of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
I believe it’s s reference to Tartaria. If you think along those lines, the dynamite makes more sense.
dontknowwhyihn··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
How do you know that’s true?
dontknowwhyihn··on Coinbase secures Bermuda licence
The SEC could have prevented Coinbase from becoming a publicly traded company, but they didn’t.
dontknowwhyihn··on Coinbase secures Bermuda licence
Isn’t it interesting how crypto went from tulips to securities all of a sudden?
dontknowwhyihn··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I would define critical thinking as a way of filtering information before absorbing it as truth. This involves actively questioning it- is it internally consistent, does it seem to have an agenda, are some obvious questions not being considered, are the arguments appealing more to emotion than logic, etc.
dontknowwhyihn··on Long Covid has had a brutal effect on the workforce, study finds
“Long Covid” is just our euphemism for adverse reactions. The fact that you’re not even allowed to bring this up casts serious doubt on all studies into the phenomenon.
dontknowwhyihn··on Tether ownership and company weaknesses revealed in documents
I overlay the BTC price chart with the chart of Tether’s market cap. The correlation is hard to miss.
dontknowwhyihn··on Pi-hole: Network-wide ad blocking
Get a short throw projector. You can plug an apple tv into it and project whatever you want on the wall. It’s the perfect dumb screen.
dontknowwhyihn··on The Spaceballs Argument for Unconditional Basic Income
I agree completely.

Also, the following statement is based on a false premise: “ Let's just recognize that Earth actually does belong to all of us, everyone in the present and future, and that those who own pieces of it, and who create things out of it, owe compensation to the rest of us for removing our access to what would otherwise have been common property.”

This implies that creation itself is some kind of theft. The actual theft is taking something from a creative, productive person and giving it to an idle one.

dontknowwhyihn··on Old man yells at cloud
I love my Nintendo Classic- no accounts, no ads, works offline.

I also agree with everything the author wrote about cars. I would add- for all the technology in cars, you still can’t see the exact amount of fuel in your tank. Because then you could determine exactly what mileage you’re getting.

dontknowwhyihn··on Leaked Slack all-hands meeting reveals a ‘strong culture clash’ with Salesforce
I imagine it will be the same with Adobe and Figma.
dontknowwhyihn··on Stable Diffusion macOS native app
AI artworks are derivative, transformative works and therefore not theft
dontknowwhyihn··on OneCoin co-founder pleads guilty to $4B fraud
HN censors pro-crypto comments.
dontknowwhyihn··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
We’ll see how well Figma holds up under Adobe, but at this point, I am not optimistic.
dontknowwhyihn··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
I worked at Zip2, and am pretty sure Elon was not fired.
dontknowwhyihn··on How to rebuild social media on top of RSS
There’s no money in an email list (in itself) and yet it can be valuable. I think it’s all about growing an audience. Maybe there’s a long tail of people who miss RSS.
dontknowwhyihn··on Apple to end employee gagging clauses after activist campaign
If only there were some way to issue digital “tokens” in situations like this..
dontknowwhyihn··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
Kubla Khan is a great poem.
dontknowwhyihn··on FTX’s collapse was a crime, not an accident
That’s how I feel about people who got vaccinated.
