dontJudge··on Ask HN: Bald men and depression
Maximize your communication (talking) with others. Not just for picking up girls. Talk to guys. Talk to girls. Talk to people.

Talk to women without an agenda for a relationship. You are focused on the moment, not some arbitrary goal. If you hit it off, a real conversation will start. If you really hit it off it will be obvious and natural to give your phone number.

Talking without an agenda.

dontJudge··on Ask HN: Best practices for software development?
I think there's some ebb and flow in what practice is ideal.

There are benefits to a detailed up front design. Conversely there are benefits to jumping straight into code, to get feedback and let the design emerge through real experience.

Unit tests are a nice way to define interfaces. Conversely sometimes it's better to discover an the ideal interface organically rather than setting it in stone up front.

Some of it is just differences in what medium you perform design. People want the medium to be like playdoh so it can be changed. Before they cast it in marble. Some languages are more like marble, some like play doh. But don't ever delude yourself, thinking you have found the best way to design.

Source control is not really software development. It's a very good thing, but in the same way that eating a healthy lunch will assist creating things.

dontJudge··on Ask HN: Spending my free time in video games. It's eating me. Suggestions?
Limit yourself to casual games that don't soak up your life. Don't even look at an MMORPG or MOBA. It's digital crack. Focus more time on people.
dontJudge··on Ask HN: Emacs-like Incremental Search?
>> Is there a native macOS text editor that supports emacs-like...

Nothing more "emacs-like" than emacs. Turn on CUA mode if common key binds is what you're after.

To save a google search, here's an emacs customization to leave cursor at the start of the match.

From http://endlessparentheses.com/leave-the-cursor-at-start-of-m...

    (add-hook 'isearch-mode-end-hook
              #'endless/goto-match-beginning)
    (defun endless/goto-match-beginning ()
"Go to the start of current isearch match.
    Use in `isearch-mode-end-hook'."
      (when (and isearch-forward
                 (number-or-marker-p isearch-other-end)
                 (not mark-active)
                 (not isearch-mode-end-hook-quit))
        (goto-char isearch-other-end)))
dontJudge··on Ask HN: What's your workflow for simple side projects?
It was a little Web IDE with an "up" arrow. It would send the file to a website by ftp. I forget the name it was so long ago.

Super efficient? Just upload content to production. I remember at my first job they pressed an "up" arrow button once content looked good in their browsers.

Super duper efficient? Develop on prod.
