donrhummy··on Thank HN: for helping me get traction with DuckDuckGo and Traction book – AMA
when will you add instant search results in the browser's search box? For example, if i use Firefox and have Google ad the default, and i type "32 * (13 - 9)" it will instantly show a dropdown with the answer 128. I would really like DDG to do this too.
donrhummy··on Is it possible to apply CSS to half of a character?
looks correct on latest firefox. what browser are you using?
donrhummy··on Project Ara – Google's modular phone project
The difference is the base of the Project Ara phone, the exoskeleton, is only $15 to replace. So if they change that, you're looking at paying $15. With PCs, the base still costs $150-200 in most cheap options and significantly more in others.
donrhummy··on Update on Metro
> Second, some details about the store... "Windows Store apps" can use the IE rendering engine to browse the web, but can't use other existing libraries like Gecko or Blink. > > Metro-enabled desktop browsers (like other desktop apps) can be listed in the Windows Store, but can't be installed there.

I don't understand why it is legal for Microsoft (AND Apple) to do this! How is this different from what Microsoft did with IE vs Netscape? Why doesn't this violate anti-trust or competition laws?

donrhummy··on Update on Metro
I used it and submitted bug reports to help the team find issues. I hate Windows but am forced to use it in certain cases. While Windows 8 touch is not huge, I would prefer to have options other than IE for myself and other users.
donrhummy··on German freemail sites trick Firefox and Chrome users into removing AdBlock
+1. Stay far away from 1and1.com! I had the worst experiences with them of any tech company. Customer service doesn't get worse than them.
donrhummy··on Show HN: I built an HTML 5 Guitar Tuner
It should have worked on Firefox too but there's a bug
donrhummy··on Show HN: I built an HTML 5 Guitar Tuner
This worked on Chrome on Android (KitKat 4.4) but not on Firefox Beta for Android. Both correctly showed the microphone sharing notification, but on Firefox, no sound ever registers.
donrhummy··on “The working group should not agree to freeze whatever syntax Chrome ships”
I linked to an article that explains what it is and left it to you (the reader) to decide if it's good or bad. I believe it is a very bad thing.
donrhummy··on “The working group should not agree to freeze whatever syntax Chrome ships”
Shadow DOM is a very, very bad idea.

http://glazkov.com/2011/01/14/what-the-heck-is-shadow-dom/

It kills cross-browser compatibility, kills standards (since they're unreachable, undocumented elements that can handle input, interaction and affect other elements.

donrhummy··on Why we love Mozilla Persona
They're working on it: https://github.com/mozilla/persona-yahoo-bridge/issues/178 You should post your findings there
donrhummy··on Unfolding The Box - CSS 3D Transforms in the Box Model
If only every browser implemented it...but IE 7,8,9 are stuck on the old APIs. They're a large percentage of all users.
donrhummy··on Make the web "flat" with this bookmarklet
That's not how flat ui design works. You can make single-color boxes and it won't look modern. Flat UI is about beautiful color palettes that are well matched and which convey the proper information without over embellishing. A few good examples:

donrhummy··on Dear Google, Thanks For Copying My Startup But You’re Doing It All Wrong
I got the feeling this post was really an attempt to get google to buy them out.
donrhummy··on Php.net detected as a malware host by Google Safe Browsing
php.net allows users to post answers and examples of code throughout the website. Likely, one of the submission forms has/had a hole that allowed someone to submit or alter actual JS code.
donrhummy··on NSA Implementing 'Two-Person' Rule To Stop The Next Edward Snowden
I'm surprised they weren't already using a threshold-scheme. (Similar to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threshold_cryptosystem )
donrhummy··on An encrypted message to Edward Snowden
Assuming there's no known exploit. The NSA might know of an exploit for that algorithm.
donrhummy··on Booting Linux using UEFI can brick Samsung laptops
It appears he didn't do that with a Samsung laptop but other machines in the past and someone replied saying it didn't fix it for them: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/1040557/comme...
donrhummy··on Amazon EC2 currently down. Affecting Heroku, Reddit, Others
I don't understand why anyone's site is only in one datacenter. i thought the point of AWS was that it was distributed with fault tolerance? Why don't they distribute all the sites/apps across all their centers?
donrhummy··on What can I do for Mozilla?
This is a great start!
donrhummy··on How Jeff Atwood works
He uses Windows so I assume he doesn't know much about Linux Distros. You're correct, Klipper was the first thing I thought of as well. I assume his OS experiences are: Mac, Windows, iOS, Android judging by his info posted.
donrhummy··on A better Android emulator
Couldn't get it to work in Firefox 16.
donrhummy··on Announcing the First Beta Release of Persona
But the assertion only gets sent if the user logs in to persona first (with their email and persona password)
donrhummy··on Announcing the First Beta Release of Persona
Persona doesn't require any browser integration. It works in all browsers that implement local storage. So it works via modern Javascript.
donrhummy··on Announcing the First Beta Release of Persona
Right, but the email providers are only authenticating you to Persona. As far as the websites using Persona are concerned, it's persona.org that authenticates you.

And the appeal that Mozilla is pushing is definitely better security (as well as a distributed security authentication versus one for-profit authority - I definitely trust Mozilla MUCH more than Facebook or twitter, but it's still a central authority). You can especially see this in the talk they gave introducing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZBTc7iEkQY

donrhummy··on Announcing the First Beta Release of Persona
Can someone explain how this is distributed and not using a central "authority"? I know it caches things locally, but it still requires Mozilla's Persona.org servers, correct? And you need a password that Mozilla stores, so aren't their servers still vulnerable? And couldn't (dumb) people still choose "123456" as their persona password? I understand that this makes the sites with crappy security implementations better, but some of the weaknesses are still there, right?
donrhummy··on Is Apple's CDMA+LTE chip the reason it can't do Voice+Data on Verizon/Sprint?
Looks like it is due to the one-chip design: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/09/still-no-simultaneous-v...
donrhummy··on GoDaddy outage caused by corrupted router tables
No, it would allow them 131 hours of downtime in 15 years: ( 365 days * 24 hours/day * 15 yrs ) * .001 = 131.4
donrhummy··on Microsoft says : "Bing is now as good as Google"
I've tried it numerous times, usually every time I read another report about it being as accurate as Google. I have never found that to be the case. I tried it again today and as usual, the results were much less than helpful (particularly when searching for computer problem solutions).
donrhummy··on Why are companies defecting from Google Maps?
Anyone know if you can get transit directions with OpenStreetMaps?
