donohoe··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Hyperion, by Dan Simmons

I had just finished the first "Dungeon Crawler Carl" and found it harmless and not worth the money. Frankly I'm a little surprised its a best seller. Do the later books get any better?

Hyperion is a first-time read and as I near the end I know I'll seek out the next one.

donohoe··on America.gov
USA.gov = 800KB

america.gov = 25MB (before you start scrolling)

Feels janky too.

donohoe··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Anyone recommend light-weight VR (or AR) setup that’s just good for watching movies on a big screen? Nothing fancy just good for that and portable.
donohoe··on New York thoracic surgeon: "For many patients 9/11 is not over"
It was not paywalled for me. To your other point, sure, but you can see the normal rate of cancer in a population over time and then see the spikes in the years directly after 2001.

The distinction is that the strongest evidence is among responders, workers, residents, and others who were directly exposed, rather than showing that cancer suddenly increased across all of NYC.

donohoe··on The two Christian saints who are the Buddha
I love how the article is “isn’t that neat?” and never touches upon any self-awareness that perhaps many religions are nothing more than stories.
donohoe··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
What I want is a tiny portable bluetooth jammer for those who insist everyone in public must be listening to their music. Sadly they are too clunky to haul around each day.
donohoe··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
"feels intentionally cruel"

They are intentionally cruel. Its the point. They aren't even trying to hide it. The posts on official Whitehouse X account are borderline gleeful on topics of deportation and immigration. I'm in dis-belief at times.

donohoe··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
If I go to a restaurant and it’s all handled through a tablet I leave. I can get that treatment at the airport.
donohoe··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
It’s not about accents, it’s about whether you look/feel like a tourist. Even so, you can never really tell how people will go.

donohoe··on Iranian hackers shut down UK power plant for 4 days
Anything from the Telegraph should be treated as suspect and an alternative source should be found.

They just told you what the difference is.
donohoe··on Sun Clock
I just give the people what they want
donohoe··on Sun Clock
Unrelated but a little related (semi-shameless plug?)- I made a small weather web-app that also plotted daylight hours as a secondary feature.

Its really weather over the next 12 hours on the primary ring, and day/night transition on the inner.

Yes. The page cites numerous sources. It may vary by agency.

donohoe··on Three Six Mafia – Data about "6/6/6 dating" (2024)
I understand that at the every end he acknowledges this is dumb, but I think the biggest issues faced by guys who follow that 6-6-6 rule is that they are immature.
donohoe··on The tiny holdout building in the middle of Macy’s is back in view
There are still farms in Manhattan and other parts of NYC. From the few I know off-hand:

- The Farm at the Javits Center (Hudson Yards) is a working rooftop farm, greenhouse, and has an orchard.

- On Randall’s Island there is a farm with raised beds, greenhouses, rice paddies, and also an orchard.

- Battery Urban Farm (Lower Manhattan) - not sure of this counts but its an operating educational farm that grows produce.

There are others.

Yes, think about the less overhead from dealing with people and building issues. Take a look at the Times Square too.
donohoe··on French firefighters face 'pyrocumulonimbus' for first time
67 comments. One mention of “climate crisis” (appropriate), 3 of “climate credits”.

No one here is really discussing “climate change”.

Is it denial, or just that we’ve accepted the obvious?

donohoe··on Decker, a platform that builds on the legacy of Hypercard and classic macOS
I miss HyperCard and I love projects like this at a nostalgia level - but if you're going to have aspirations that this is useful today (2026) with a real project then its a complete waste of time.

I want HyperCard where I can build out a stack or whatever and actually present it to people as a real and tangible thing. I love living in the past as much as anyone else, but this is a little disappointing.

donohoe··on Stolen Buttons
I have noticed on occasion websites with a missing button. Now I know what happened. Finally, closure.
donohoe··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
I get it but you shouldn’t assume everything is about the USA. YC may be based here but it’s a big world out there.
donohoe··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
> considering that the watch is practically useless without a connected phone

It can still tell you the time. Its primary function is a watch.

donohoe··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
I’m also baffled that they didn’t do this. If I am buying something that becomes so precious to my workflow then I don’t want a hardware subscription. I also want peace of mind that the company will not be gone, or the product discontinued in a few years.
donohoe··on Real-time map of Great Britain's rail network
Very nice! I’m making one for NYC subway. It’s still in-progress and animations need a lot more work. Next steps was to adjust the size and overlay it on a proper map.

donohoe··on Claude Code is steganographically marking requests
You mention PII and potentially whether this is it.

From a privacy perspective, this is better described as metadata, it is not personally identifiable information (PII).

donohoe··on Pollen (CEO Negus-Fancey, CTO Wright) tried to remove article, and Google helped
I have received notifications for stories published by the org I work at when they were delisted for certain terms. Like here, it’s people who got caught doing disreputable things and trying to cleanup their online presence.
donohoe··on Pollen tried to remove my article and Google is assisting with it
Many sites have setup Google Search Console and so you can be notified through that.
