donniefitz2··on Tell HN: I just open-sourced the e-mail client I spent 2 years of my life on
Yeah, don't use the 64bit. The non-64 worked great for me. After that go to the installer directory and run the installer.
donniefitz2··on Tell HN: I just open-sourced the e-mail client I spent 2 years of my life on
This is awesome. I've been looking for something like this for Windows for a long time. You put some serious effort into this and it's beautiful.

FYI - for those looking to run this: open the non-64 bit solution, build it, then go to the installer directory and run the windows installer. Works really nicely.

donniefitz2··on Does our homepage load quickly or slow for you?
Loaded fast for me with no lag or anything (AZ, United States)
donniefitz2··on Show HN: SaaSaholics.com - A forum for SaaS builders (and a contest)
I've been on SaaSaholics for a few weeks and it has potential.
donniefitz2··on Ask HN: "Idea Guys": Help or ignore?
HTML, CSS and Javascript so they can at least translate an idea into a prototype/mockup that expresses the idea. That is, assuming a web app idea.
donniefitz2··on TechCrunch's Mascara Tears
Love the analogy. It really is fitting.
donniefitz2··on Show HN: Like Button for Hacker News
Please don't do this to HN. I really like it here.
donniefitz2··on GeekStack Postmortem
Wow, your story is very familiar. I experienced similar challenges with my first and second startup attempts. The nice part is, you can try again and bring these lessons with you.
donniefitz2··on Show HN: Codecademy.com, the easiest way to learn to code
Ah, well if it requires FB, that would explain it. I was behind a corporate firewall that blocks FB.
donniefitz2··on Show HN: Codecademy.com, the easiest way to learn to code
Not sure what's wrong with the site, but the top left is just one big empty area of white space and the get started button does nothing at all. I've tried both FF 6.0 and Chrome.
donniefitz2··on A very weird/creepy interactive girl, but great rendering
Yes, very creepy. And here eyes are bloodshot. She looks like she's been toke'n some virtual weed.
donniefitz2··on Ask HN: How much do you pay software engineers?
This kind of question tends to be a bit taboo.
donniefitz2··on Ivy-League profs grade differently depending on party affiliation
Wait, you found a Republican professor at an Ivy-League college? What am I missing?
donniefitz2··on Why is it so hard to define what it means to be a 'product guy'?
Is he the guy who knows what needs to be done. Knows how to do it, but doesn't do it? Then I think he's the lazy guy. Or maybe he's just above the pain of doing it; ie, the lazy guy.
donniefitz2··on Ashton Kutcher Joins the Airbnb Team
Is this really a good thing? What does he offer?
donniefitz2··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
I would suggest starting the "idea" with data about paying customers. There's a lot of data out there. Find a market, figure out what they need/want and build a POC. Figure out if your market will pay for it and garner feedback. You might just find that your market will reveal the elusive "idea" for you.
donniefitz2··on Gold Mania in the Yukon
I thoroughly enjoyed this article. There's nothing more raw in terms of entrepreneurship than gold prospecting.
donniefitz2··on The Perils of Sample Code
Yeah, I understand that tutorials are usually written with the focus on one thing but pointing people to even a link for security or unit testing techniques would be helpful.
donniefitz2··on Great jquery tutorial
It would be nice to read this on my Kindle.
donniefitz2··on Craigslist has been disrupted
Craig's List can be enhanced. I'm surprised no one has done it yet.
donniefitz2··on How not to protect against SQL injection (view source)
I was thinking the same thing. Let's hope that's true.
donniefitz2··on Ask HN: Can You Code Under the Influence of Alcohol?
Good point.
donniefitz2··on Ask HN: Can You Code Under the Influence of Alcohol?
I once worked at the Microsoft Technology Center in Mountain View for a week and they had beer. They told me I could have one whenever, so I had a few Killian's and I was useless after about 2 or 3.

Interesting how others seem to benefit from it.

donniefitz2··on My fellow geeks, we need to have a talk.
I have to say, as a former sk8er (too old now), this is typical. Skateboarders have been social Switzerland for decades. Often un-critical of ones appearance and always deep into their sport, I'm not surprised by Steve's attitude.
donniefitz2··on Albert Einstein: Why Socialism? (1949)
I thing Pilgrim's Progress is number 2 in the States. At least I think that's still true.
donniefitz2··on Albert Einstein: Why Socialism? (1949)
By the way, I didn't say Socialism wasn't defined. I clearly said the assumptions that he laid out were not defined. The larger ideas, like the goal of life. I don't think those concepts are addressed often, they are assumed. Meaning is more basic than truth.
donniefitz2··on Albert Einstein: Why Socialism? (1949)
I couldn't agree more about the defining of terms. While I find the article well reasoned given his assumptions, I think it's the assumptions that need to be addressed. Terms like, "social-ethical end", "inner equilibrium", and idea of a goal of life.

I think it's these terms and the basic assumptions behind them are what need to be addressed prior to attempting to construct a social system.

donniefitz2··on You win, RIM (An open letter to RIM's developer relations)
No time wasted. And you're a good writer to boot. I thoroughly enjoyed the article.
donniefitz2··on You win, RIM (An open letter to RIM's developer relations)
I hope this letter causes RIM to WAKE UP! You are not the dominant force any more. Get with it.
donniefitz2··on I'm finally doing it: bootstrapping my start up.
I love your optimism. Getting on with the dream is a good feeling and it's great to get fired up. I work for a major airline and I'm curious about your product.

At the same time, you have a long road ahead. A startup is a major commitment and it's anything but easy. There will be many ups and downs and it can be emotionally draining.

The key is to press on when that enthusiasm (it really does feel great to get started) wears off and it gets tough, and it will. Make it through the peaks and valleys and you might have something.

I hope things go well for you.
