done_lurking··on OpenAI Withdraws 3 Math Papers
This has always been the risk with majoring in math. AI is making it worse but there was never a time where studying math didn't have an extremely high opportunity cost.
done_lurking··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
I think the origin of the word "nerf" as a verb came from the Nerf brand of toy guns. The idea being that "Nerfing" something is to turn it into a harmless version of itself.
done_lurking··on Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality?
You are half spin torsioning my subatomic particles right now
done_lurking··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
This is an interesting theory, but I think it has less explanatory power than the Sugon framework for gravity.
done_lurking··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Why is it absurd to say that the human brain could be better? That seems obviously true to me.
done_lurking··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
This will be what makes companies start pursuing legal action. Once it's not mostly people in poor countries who are pirating, companies will try to reclaim that lost revenue. I'm not sure if they can do anything about torrenting, but I would be surprised if TV devices like what you mentioned are still available in a couple years.
done_lurking··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Those do technically cross an air gap but don't they still require being really close to work?
done_lurking··on Good people refuse to do bad things
Are you saying that it's morally wrong to seek technological progress because it causes people to lose jobs? That doesn't seem like a coherent position unless you're an anarcho-primitivist.
done_lurking··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
There are other reasons not to trust them as well, especially if you've seen how their sales team operates https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40481808
done_lurking··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
As I understand, those legislations are imposed on the exchanges, not the individual. The Neovim team doesn't have to do any extra work to verify the integrity of the bitcoin.

You're right about the taxes, but even after taxes it would still be more than worth your time to exchange for fiat.

Bitcoin is not real money nor legal tender in any country AFAIK, but I don't see how that makes it worthless. You could say the same thing about almost anything that isn't fiat, yet people liquidate non-fiat assets into fiat all the time. I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that it should all be sent to a dead wallet.

done_lurking··on Neovim have a ~$800k Bitcoin donation sitting untouched since 2023
In what country does a bitcoin donation need to go through an "anti money laundering check"? Also, you could pay a lawyer 100k to handle the taxes and accounting and you would still have 700k left over.
done_lurking··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
It matters the same way that calling a dog or a cat intelligent matters. It humanizes the thing, even if that isn't your intention. Right now that's not a big deal since most people agree that machines should not have rights, but I wouldn't take that for granted.
done_lurking··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Go isn't solved.
done_lurking··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
It does help, if the accusation is true. The fact that false accusations result in less genuine content implies that true accusations result in less disingenuous content. For better or for worse, social consequences do affect people's behavior on average.
done_lurking··on Compute-efficient pretraining and scaling to trillion-parameter models
Wouldn't daily cancer scans give you cancer from all the radiation? I thought that's why the doc hides behind a wall when giving an X-ray.
done_lurking··on Python sets and dictionaries can have quadratic-time performance
Time complexity is something that applies to algorithms, and is determined analytically. I don't think it's useful to equivocate the definition with performance of implementations of algorithms determined through real world data. Both of these things are important, but they are not the same. The fact that they differ is not very surprising and does not necessarily mean that a misunderstanding has occurred.
done_lurking··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
I thought Cloudflare generally refuses to serve those kinds of sites. What content is Cloudflare serving that is extremist?
done_lurking··on Among European Companies That Use a CDN, Nearly 9 in 10 Use Cloudflare
Do you really need Cloudflare for something like this?
done_lurking··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
It's inconvenient that the links are dead, but all the information needed to find the referenced information is still stored in the link. You just have to change the domain to a working instance.
done_lurking··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
What is TPB?
done_lurking··on SteamdDB Joins Nexus Mods
I don't really see why this has to be a problem. If people are breaking the rules, you can just remove them. If you have the authority to remove the first person, then what does it matter if he brings his friends? Just remove them if they start causing problems. This just sounds like a post-hoc justification for removing someone simply because you don't like them. You are allowed to do that, of course, if it's your own platform. The problem is when people are appointed authority with the expectation that they will act without bias, in which case I believe that the threat of a potential nazi bar problem is an insufficient explanation for removing someone.
done_lurking··on I wanna live an NPC life
>You actually can't plan and prepare for a hypothetical war with russia.

You can, in fact, do this. Just because you prefer to be helpless doesn't mean that's the only option.

done_lurking··on Creepy Crawlies
As gp said, it does provide some protection. If it didn't, nobody would use it and there would be nothing to discuss. Making snarky comparisons doesn't do anything.
done_lurking··on 11,000-year-old sculpture of man riding a leopard found in Turkey
ggp isn't being dismissive or incurious. They say they are skeptical of the reasoning used in the science.org article, but are still open to the accepting the conclusion. Does being curious mean you aren't allowed to question anything? gp is probably being downvoted for dismissing ggp's concerns with a trite "please educate yourself" and not actually referencing anything to read. Telling someone else they are wrong and to go find evidence to support your own opposing view may technically be "encouraging curiosity" but it's certainly not curious itself.
done_lurking··on Improving Heuristics for A* Pathfinding
Experimental multithreading was added in 2023 https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=181776 I'm not sure if it's improved since then. Performance doesn't seem to be a priority for Tarn. It's kind of unfortunate, since I think DF would be an interesting problem space for optimizations, similar to Factorio, and it really needs it.
done_lurking··on Taylor Farms has rewritten its cyclospora statement four times in sixteen days
It seems plausible that someone could make a decent discriminator for distinguishing human text from AI text. I wouldn't immediately discount the idea.
done_lurking··on The Maxwell Conjecture Is False (GPT 5.6 Sol)
I can't wait to see AI disprove the DN conjecture soon.
done_lurking··on Apple's hostile App Store rating system
> that stupid anime girl who is on way too many open source web sites

I assume you're referring to https://github.com/TecharoHQ/anubis. As I understand, this is a tool for blocking bot traffic and is sometimes used as DDOS protection. In my experience it's less obtrusive than Cloudflare, and it's open source and competes with Cloudflare's near monopoly on DDOS protection. I don't think we should be discouraging people from protecting their sites from unwanted traffic.
